A LARGE CHINESE ENAMELLED PORCELAIN FIGURE OF A MONK PROBABLY REPUBLIC PERIOD The figure depicted seated in lalitasana with one hand held in dhyana mudra and the other raised in vitarka mudra, he wears yellow robes brightly decorated with flowers amongst scrolling tendrils and geometric designs, with areas of detail highlighted in gilt, all raised on a turquoise throne shaped as rocky mountains, painted with a six character Qianlong mark to the front, with an impressed six character Qianlong mark to the underside, 34cm overall. A CHINESE IMPERIAL IRON-RED 'DRAGON' WINE CUP SIX CHARACTER TONGZHI MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1862-74 The deep body flaring at the rim, painted with two dragons chasing flaming pearls amidst stylised flames, with crashing waves encircling the foot, the design contained between simple iron-red bands, the base with the reign mark in underglaze blue, 6cm dia. FOUR CHINESE SNUFF BOTTLES QING DYNASTY One worked in agate with an old man riding a donkey, the figure carrying a large flowering branch in one hand, another in white glass imitating stone, with irregular brown markings across the body, the largest carved in agate, the stone's natural inclusions creating an abstract design, the fourth porcelain, painted in underglaze blue and red with a horse by a willow tree, 7cm max. A CHINESE YELLOW-GROUND 'LANDSCAPE' PORCELAIN SNUFF BOTTLE 20TH CENTURY The pear-shaped body rising to a tall neck terminating in a garlic-head mouth, finely painted with a continuous scene depicting figures in a mountainous river landscape, with two lines of calligraphy and three seal marks above, the base with a four character Daoguang mark in iron-red, 8cm. Provenance: from an English private collection, West Yorkshire, formed in the 1970s and 1980s.
A CHINESE FAMILLE JAUNE PORCELAIN MODEL OF A THRONE 19TH CENTURY The elaborate throne decorated with mythical beasts and flowers in green, yellow, black and aubergine enamels, with moulded figures and horses by towers to each side, the step to the seat formed as a separate piece, all raised on a square pedestal, 23cm high overall. A PAIR OF CHINESE QIANJIANG STYLE ENAMELLED PORCELAIN HEXAGONAL-SECTION HAT STANDS LATE QING DYNASTY Each decorated with two gentlemen in a landscape, they gaze up at an Immortal carrying a basket containing a peach and a large flower, the reverse of each painted with an ox and a figure on a sampan in a mountainous landscape, with lines of calligraphy dividing the scenes, each facet with a pierced quatrefoil panel, the bases with impressed marks, 28cm. A CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE ARMORIAL TEAPOT AND COVER FOR THE DUTCH MARKET C.1745 Probably decorated with the Rolandus arms, painted to each side with a lady representing Hope leaning on an anchor, she holds a shield decorated with nude figures in one hand, with a banner bearing a gilt inscription above her, with complex bands encircling the rim and to the cover, 18cm. (2) Cf. Dr J Kroes, Chinese Armorial Porcelain for the Dutch Market, no.247 for a tea bowl and saucer bearing the arms of the Rolandus family.
TWO CHINESE PORCELAIN TEA CANISTERS KANGXI 1662-1722 One painted in the famille verte palette, the body decorated with bamboo sprays contained between floral bands, with areas of detail highlighted in gilt, together with a metal cover, the other canister decorated with a watery landscape scene in blue and white, 10.4cm and 10.2cm. A NEAR PAIR OF CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE RUBY-GROUND ORMOLU-MOUNTED BEAKER VASES THE PORCELAIN 18TH CENTURY, THE MOUNTS 19TH CENTURY One painted with shaped panels enclosing ladies, boys and flowering branches beneath a continuous lotus scroll, the other decorated with cartouches containing peony and chrysanthemum blooms between green bands of roundels reserved on diaper, with stylised flowerheads dividing the panels, all set against a rich cherry-red ground, with ormolu mounts to the rims and feet, the interior of each with a removable liner, 42.5cm overall. A PAIR OF CHINESE CELADON GLAZED ORMOLU-MOUNTED PEAR-SHAPED VASES THE PORCELAIN 18TH CENTURY, THE MOUNTS 19TH CENTURY Each rising from a spread foot to a waisted neck which flares towards the rim, the neck of each flanked by two moulded handles shaped as chilong, decorated all over with a greyish-green crackled glaze, with European ormolu mounts to the feet and rims, 43cm overall. (2) Provenance: from the collection of the late Hubert René Joseph Georges Faure (1919-2020). Hubert Faure was the first husband of Elizabeth (Bessie) de Cuevas, who married when she was nineteen. Bessie was the daughter of Margaret Rockefeller, granddaughter of John D Rockefeller. Cf. Rim of one vase with faint descending hairline. Each piece with signs of pitting, surface wear and some scratching. Vase with re-glued/restored crack to the body of the vase.- see images for clarification. Glaze grazing/chipping to the rim of the vase also visible.
A JAPANESE SHOKI-IMARI DISH EDO PERIOD, C.1630-40 The well decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with a small hare prancing beneath a scrolling cloud, inscribed to the side 'Spring White Hare' in a rectangular cartouche, the design created in fukizumi with paper stencils covered in splashed ink, the outlines drawn afterwards in cobalt blue, the surface speckled with sand or grit, raised on a circular unglazed foot, 20.3cm. Provenance: formerly a Japanese private collection. See Portland Art Museum, access. no.2018.76.21 for a related Shoki-Imari dish depicting a rabbit prancing under a cloud. Also, see the British Museum, access. no.1959,0418.1 for a dish with the moon and rabbit. Cf. R S Jenyns, Japanese Porcelain, pl.6B, where the British Museum dish is discussed. This dish is an example of early porcelain produced at the Tengudani kiln in Arita. The original design was Chinese; the hare is often represented pounding the elixir of life.
A JAPANESE VAN FRYTOM STYLE DISH EDO PERIOD, C.1690-1710 Decorated in underglaze blue, the well painted with a rural scene of European-style figures in a small boat, with houses by the water edge in the background, the underside with a Chinese mark for Da Ming Chenghua nian zhi, 12.8cm. Cf. G Lang, The Wrestling Boys, An exhibition of Chinese and Japanese ceramics from the 16th to the 18th century in the collection at Burghley House, p.13, no.38 for a related dish, one of a pair. Also, see C J A Jörg, Fine & Curious, Japanese Export Porcelain in Dutch Collections, p.246, no.317, for another example in the collection of Twickel Castle, Delden. The author also explains that similar saucers were found during excavations in Deshima. This design was first created by famous Dutch artist Frederik Van Frytom (1632-1702). Van Frytom created an important series of Delftware dishes for export to Japan in 1684 which reflected the Dutch landscape tradition of the 17th century. Van Frytom's patterns (including the design known as 'Deshima Island') became a large part of Japan kilns production made for the West.
A PAIR OF JAPANESE PORCELAIN JARDINIERES MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY The tall rectangular bodies decorated with two sides featuring buildings in mountainous river landscapes rendered en grisaille, the other two sides painted in a style reminiscent of Chinese famille rose decoration, one with an insect flying over a basket of grapes and vines, another with fruiting branches of pomegranates, the last two painted with small crabs crawling by tables laden with an incense burner and a tea kettle, with flowers in vases beside them, both jardinières raised on four short feet and signed Dai Nihon Kinzan sei, both 13cm.
