Two pairs of turquoise parrots mounted with ormolu bases are recorded in the Livre Journal of Lazare Duvaux: one pair was delivered to M. de Presle on 7 November 1752 for 360 livres, another to M. d'Azincourt on 2 October 1754 for 432 livres. The full description is located on page 21 of the 1934 catalogue, and there is also a photograph of part of the lot illustrated on the facing page. The service features a design loosely known as the 'Rockefeller pattern' or 'Palace' ware. This is not an 18th century name, but reflects the fact that a very handsome and extensive service of this pattern was once owned by the distinguished American collector John D. Rockefeller Jnr. Americans also call similar wares 'Palace ware' which was a term used by the generation of buyers in New York, Boston and Philadelphia in the 1930s.For similar examples see, Ronald W. Note: A hoard of 400 bisque porcelain busts of Chairman Mao were discovered on the Sino-Tibetan border in an area regarded as the inspiration for Shangri-La. Originally intended for distribution throughout the South Eastern corner of Tibet, they were packed into baskets and transported by horse to Zhong Dian on the Yunnan Tibet border. The baskets were stored awaiting distribution in a police station but never made it any further, languishing forgotten until 1998 when the building was destroyed by an earthquake. The busts miraculously survived, protected by their transit baskets and straw wadding. The design of the bust was officially sanctioned, being the only sculptural image of Mao made for distribution to official buildings in China. The majority of the hoard was bought by the late Peter Wain, before being shipped to the UK. Please refer to department for condition report
