* A rare Documentary Chinese porcelain dish, 1879, of triangular form with raised rim and enamelled in 'Canton' style, richly decorated with roses, pomegranates, butterflies and pheasants, a central gilt square with gilt inscription in capitals 'Emily Canton 1879', 26.2 cm  QTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: The David & Sarah Battie Collection.Feller, The Canton Famille Rose Porcelains (Peabody Essex Museum, 1982), page 27 (illustrated).David Sanctuary Howard, A Tale of Three Cities, Canton, Shanghai, Hong Kong (1997) page 52 (illustrated).While Arabic inscriptions on Chinese bowls are not uncommon, fewer than half a dozen pieces with English dates and places are recorded. 'An effort to discover a ship Emily, which was clearly at Canton in 1879 has not been successful. A search of Lloyds Register reveals 23 ships and 6 ocean-going British yachts of the name at that time - the largest vessel being a barque of 403 tons. It seems less likely, however, that Emily was a person.' (Howard).

A 20th century Chinese porcelain bowl of quatrefoil form: matt duck-egg blue glazed interior; the exterior hand-decorated in enamels with a continuous landscape scene of mountains, buildings and boats; raised on slightly spreading conforming foot; six-character Xianfeng seal mark to the underside (22.5 cm wide x 8 cm high). Conforming pierced Chinese hardwood stand with four shaped legs. * Condition. Gilt wear to rim. Light glaze scratches and surface wear to the interior turquoise glaze, with matting to the surface of the glaze to the well. Glaze crazing to the turquoise glaze to the base. The porcelain is in good condition, with no chips, hairlines, cracks or star cracks. No restoration.

A 19th century Chinese porcelain bowl of pleasing proportions: hand-decorated in cobalt-blue underglaze with scrolling lotus to the exterior, raised on circular foot, four-character blue painted Chinese apocryphal reign mark to underside (12.25 cm in diameter). * Condition: One hairline crack from rim, approx. 4cm long. A number of small glaze frits to the rim, plus two or three other slightly larger glaze chips. One burst bubble to the glaze to the exterior from firing, leaving a circular unglazed pinhead sized spot to one leaf. No other faults.

Lot 57

An 18th century Chinese porcelain bowl with slightly everted rim, the interior with stylised flaming pearls and exterior with four circular coiled dragons interspersed with stylised decoration, the circular foot with square Chinese apocryphal mark between concentric circles, the underside of the foot exhibiting chatter marks (rim fritting and hairlines) (17.5cm diameter) * Condition: Five long hairlines from the rim and three large joined cracks to one side. Also four chips to the rim, plus glaze fritting all around the rim.

Three Chinese porcelain pieces: 1. a flowerhead-shaped porcelain pedestal dish decorated with two exotic birds perched on a flowering branch emanating from rockwork with peonies surrounding; the underside decorated with floral sprigs; spreading circular foot decorated in enamels with stylised waves; six-character painted red seal mark of Tongzhi to underside (13 cm in diameter). 2. a late 19th century Canton porcelain bowl hand-decorated in famille rose enamels with figures and peony within shaped-cartouches (10.5 cm in diameter). 3. a similar sized bowl decorated with key-fret design to the interior border and the exterior with iron oxide, blue and green enamels depicting sprigs and birds in flight (10.75 cm in diameter).  * Condition: Flowerhead-shaped dish: Small unglazed spot to the rim (a firing fault). Otherwise in good condition, with no chips, cracks or restoration. Canton bowl: Some gilt wear. Otherwise good with no other faults. Bowl with keywork band to rim: Gilt wear throughout, otherwise good with no other faults.

Lot 37

A pair of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain chargers: probably late 19th century, painted with two opposing long bodied, four-toed dragons amidst flowering plants, within a broad border of ruyi and prunus blossom, the underside with three sprays of bamboo. (30.3 cm in diameter) (One with a small rim chip and hairline.) * Condition: One with a small rim chip and 1.5in. hairline, and a small underglaze firing flaw to the rim. The other in good condition overall, but with a raised glaze flaw to the edge of the central design, which has been removed with an abrasive tool, leaving a matted patch to the glaze with surrounding glaze scratching. There are also some iron spots to the glaze around this area.

Lot 44

A 19th century Chinese lozenge-shaped porcelain pedestal dish. The interior delicately decorated in varying coloured enamels with a mountainous background landscape with a flock of nine birds, painted red sun and stylised clouds. The foreground with two figures climbing steps and approaching a fenced gateway to a sanctuary of buildings in the centre ground. The exterior of the bowl decorated with pink, blue and turquoise opposing phoenixes, and the slightly spreading foot decorated with floral sprigs above a Ming-style lappet border. (LWH 28.5 x 23 x 8.25 cm). * Condition: Tiny pinhead sized chip to edge of the base. Otherwise in good condition, with no other chips, cracks or restoration. A little gilt wear to rim.

An early 20th century Chinese porcelain jar and cover: hand gilded and decorated in iron oxide red with two open-mouthed dragons amongst scrolling lotuses, four-character Kangxi mark to underside (14.5 cm high). * Condition: In good condition, with no chips, cracks or other faults. No restoration.

Lot 51

Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) - a Chinese porcelain dragon dish: four-clawed dragon in underglaze blue flying through stylised clouds to attain the flaming sacred pearl of wisdom; the long scaly body and tail of the dragon painted and continuing on the underside of the dish with further stylised clouds flanking; apocryphal square mark within concentric circles and circular foot with unglazed edge. (16 cm in diameter) * Condition: Two small chips and five hairline cracks to rim. Another long hairline across the interior of the bowl, below the dragon's head - this is also visible to the underside of the bowl.

A circa 1900 Chinese porcelain stacking box of four sections in cylindrical form, the top decorated with figures riding a kylin within a garden setting, the sides decorated with butterflies and floral sprays bearing indistinct oxide red seal mark to base 11 cm high x 8.5 cm diameter Condition Report : Over all condition good, though several firing faults and blemishes throughout the piece, particularly to the sides and base and to the interior of the base. Some rust type discolouration to the base of the foot. Firing crack at the point of the oxide red mark to the base and around the edge of the glaze - see images for further detail

A set of four Chinese porcelain reticulated plates, Qianlong (1736-1795), each circular plate decorate in the famille rose palette depicting peacocks perched on branches and rocky outcrops, within a spear head border, largest 28cm diameter and smallest 21.5cm diameter (4) (at fault) Condition report; Largest example with rivet repair to the reticulated rim. All with chips and losses to the rims and reticulated borders, varying from glaze grazes to more significant chips. Some over painting and further restoration can be seen to the reticulated borders. Surface scratching and wear can be seen to the centre of each plate. Pitting also apparent throughout. 

Lot 569

A Chinese porcelain 'Wu Shuang Pu' teapot and cover, Guangxu period (1875-1908), the circular pot externally decorated in the famille rose palette with figures and calligraphy scripture, the removable cover similarly decorated, bearing iron-red Daoguang (1821-50) seal mark to the underside, 9cm high overallCondition report; Faint hairline crack ascending from the rim of the cover approx 2.5cm. Further underglaze hairline can be seen to the underside of the cover extending to approx 7cm. Pitted to the underside. Gilt wear to the rim of the pot. Slight nibbles to the tip of the spout. Some pitting to the body of the pot. Decoration and colours appear clean and vivid.

A pair of Capodimonte porcelain nodding Chinese figures, 20th century, the male and female each modelled seated cross legged with articulated head, tongue and hands, picked out in polychrome enamels throughout, crowned 'N' in blue to underside, each 23cm high (2) CONDITION REPORT:The male figure shows small chips to the edge of the tongue, but no other obvious chips, cracks, crazing or repairs.  The female figure shows no obvious chips, cracks, crazing or repairs.  Both figures show fine surface wear and rubbing to the gilt highlights throughout.  Both figures would benefit from cleaning.

Coffee cup - Gilt and decoration wear to the exterior. Pitted interior.
