Ca. 20th C or earlier. A pair of thinly potted Chinese porcelain bowls. The interior shows a central medallion containing a five-clawed dragon. The same ornament is repeated on the exteriors. The rims and foots are also adorned with two parallel lines painted in blue. The symbolism behind the dragon has always been the prevalent one, rapresenting the emblem of power. According to Chinese tradition, Budai was an eccentric Chinese Zen monk who lived during the 10th Century. He is almost always shown smiling or laughing, carrying around a few possesions in a small sack. This figure appears throughout Chinese culture as a representation of contentment, a symbol of happiness and prosperity.
