A Chinese blue and white 'Musicians' dish, KangxiDia.: 33,5 cmÊ Provenance: A French private collection.Ê Ref.:- Christie's, New York, Jan. 21, 2003, lot 256. (sold USD 22.705) - Christie's, New York, Jan. 23, 2012, lot 406. (sold USD 17.500) - The British Museum, Museum number 1963,0422.18, for another example (link), with the curator's following comments: According to Harrison-Hall and Krahl, 1994: This scene was copied from an engraving by Nicolas Bonnart (1646-1718) of Paris and drawn by his brother Robert, entitled 'Symphonie du Tympanum, du Luth et de la Flute d'Allemagne' (Howard and Ayers, 1978, vol. I , pl.35a). The print was also inscribed with verses comparing the inferior pleasures of Music to those of Love (Hervouet and Bruneau, 1986, p. 189). Other dishes with this scene exist, several vary in details such as the landscape scenes in the petal cartouches and some are closer to the original print than the present piece; compare examples in the Princessehof Museum, Leeuwarden, Netherlands (Leeuwarden, 1986, no.100); in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Godden, 1979, no.21); in the Manchester Art Gallery, Great Britain (Hobson, 1925, pl. XXIX, fig.3); and in the Mottahedeh collection (Howard and Ayers, 1978, vol.I, pl.35). This 'music party' print is one of a number of late 17th-century costume prints and other Chinese porcelain designs exist of ladies with similar elaborate hair-styles, fashionable in France and named the "coiffure, a la Duchesse de Fontanges" after the mistress of Louis XIV (1661-1715), who established its popularity. This print also inspired the decoration of Dutch Delft faience pieces such as an early 18th-century violin at the Musee de Rouen, France (Beurdeley, 1962, fig. 11).

A Chinese gilt-decorated cup and saucer and a floral famille rose cup, YongzhengDia.: 13,5 cm (the saucer)Dia.: 8,5 cm - H.: 4 cm (the cup)Ê Provenance:- A Dutch private collection. - The famille rose cup with an engraved inventory number from the collection of August the Strong.Ê The Saxon elector and Polish king Augustus the Strong was a major proponent of porcelain in the early 18th century. His love for the material drove him to imprison a talented young alchemist named Johann Friedrich Bottger in hopes of finding the formula for white porcelain, which at that time was a secret known only in China and Japan.Ê When Bottger perfected the recipe for porcelain in 1709, Augustus the Strong quickly founded the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, the first porcelain manufactory in Europe, revolutionizing the porcelain market worldwide. He eventually amassed what is still the largest collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain in the West, and began plans for a palace built to store the royal collection, an ambition that ultimately remained a dream.Ê The collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain Augustus the Strong grew to 29.000 pieces until his death in 1733. Roughly 8.000 pieces from his collection are still preserved in Dresden. They are actually the subject of a major cataloguing, digitization, and research project of the Dresden Porcelain Collection, something experts from all over the world are working on. The remaining third can be considered as a representative cross section of the original collection. The other pieces were dispersed throughout the world in many different ways: In the 19th century, when the Porcelain Collection tried to turn itself into a museum of world ceramics, so-called duplicates were sold or given away in exchanges. When Saxony became a republic in 1918, parts of the porcelain collection became public whereas others stayed with the royal family and were partly auctioned. More losses occurred during the Second World War, when the collections were moved to different repositories outside of Dresden and later to Russia, from where the biggest part returned to Dresden in 1958. Today, we can recognize the pieces originally in the collection of Augustus the Strong thanks to their historic inventory numbers. They are treasured objects in public as well as private collections and in the art market.
