Lot 241

A Lund's Bristol scallop shell pickle dish, circa 1748-50The mould probably cast from an actual shell, painted in blue with a Chinese vase containing two feathers in front of a partly unrolled scroll, an insect in flight to one side, the border with three long feathers entwined with ribbons, a shell flanked by two leaves at the base, the underside with two leafy branches, 9.6cm longFootnotes:Chemical analysis of a distinctive class of 'Limehouse' pickle dishes has shown these to be primarily of the Mg-P-Pb type and therefore made from a formula containing soaprock. While some examples appear to be more highly vitrified or glassy than others, it seems likely that all were manufactured at Bristol. See Ray Jones, The Origins of Worcester Porcelain (2018), pp.248-51, where a dish with identical decoration is illustrated on p.249, no.JY5. It is therefore interesting to note that the two dividing 'supports' in the moulding of the lobed panels differs on each side of this teapot, a feature noted on many early creamboats made at Worcester. The blue and white versions of this teapot shape at Worcester are rarer than those painted in overglaze enamels. See Simon Spero, Lund's Bristol and Early Worcester Porcelain (2006), for an example of each type from the A J Smith Collection, p.108, pl.29 (blue and white) and p.177, pl.85 (polychrome). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Joseph Handley illustrates an early Worcester teabowl and saucer with a similar version, see 18th Century English Transfer-Printed Porcelain and Enamels (1991), p.128, no.4.1. On this rare finger bowl, the chinoiserie print of 'La Terre' has been used in conjunction with The Red Bull which was copied directly from Chinese porcelain. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Hancock fecit, 1757' below the leopard, which is more legible on a related Chinese saucer illustrated at pl.125.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 268

A Worcester bowl, circa 1767-68From the Bodenham service, finely potted and painted with a blue scale ground reserving rococo gilt scroll-edged panels, enamelled with Chinese figures in stylised landscapes, smaller panels with flowering plants in red and puce, 15cm diam, 'B' mark in underglaze blueFootnotes:A service of this pattern was sold as part of the Bodenham Collection in 1872. A teabowl and saucer of this design from the Crane Collection was sold by Bonhams on 31 March 2010, lot 260. An attribution to James Giles remains debated. See Gerald Coke who illustrates a spoon tray of this pattern in the Ashmolean Museum, In Search of James Giles (1983), pl.42a. See also Sandon and Spero, Worcester Porcelain, The Zorensky Collection (1996), p.357, pl.456 where another teabowl and saucer is illustrated and discussed.
