A RARE CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL AND GILT-BRONZE 'BUDDHIST LIONS' EWER16th centuryOf ovoid form with a high arched loop handle and serpentine spout, enamelled around the body with six Buddhist lions encircling two brocade balls tied with ribbons, amidst ruyi-head clouds interrupted by a small vase holding precious objects, all between a band of ruyi-head petals around the shoulder and lotus petals around the base, the neck, spout and base similarly enamelled with scrolling foliage. 22.2cm (8 3/4in) wide.Footnotes:十六世紀 銅胎掐絲琺瑯獅子繡球穿花執壺Although the lion is not native to China, its image has long been important to the repertoire of Chinese iconography. Lions were first presented to the Han court by emissaries from Central Asia and Persia, and the Chinese for lion (shi 獅) is thought to be derived from the Persian word šer. Lions were often depicted in stone statuary, symbolising protection and law, and from the Tang dynasty, appeared on decorative arts. The Buddha's teachings are often referred to as the 'lion's roar' in the sutras, indicating their power and nobility. Buddhist lions playing with a brocade ball became the most popular form of imagery for the lion during the Ming dynasty. For a very similar decoration of Buddhist lions, see a cloisonné enamel dish, 16th century, illustrated by C.Brown, Chinese Cloisonné: The Clague Collection, Phoenix Art Museum, 1980, pp.22-23, pl.3.Compare with a very similar cloisonné enamel ewer and cover, 16th century, also decorated with lions, illustrated by H.Brinker and A.Lutz, Chinesisches Cloisonné: Die Sammlung Pierre Uldry, Zurich, 1984, no.98. The author notes that 'no prototype in porcelain [of this shape] exists, but other examples are known in cloisonné enamel. These ewers, sometimes decorated with lions, sometimes with scrolling lotus, possibly served as ritual vessels in Buddhist or Lamaist ritual ceremonies.' Compare with a very similar cloisonné enamel ewer and cover, 16th century, which was sold at Christie's Paris, 7 December 2007, lot 6; and another very similar cloisonné enamel ewer and cover, 17th century, which was sold at Christie's London, 12 November 2010, lot 1146.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The mission specialised in educational, literary and philanthropic work and Dr Rieder was in fact, not a theologian or missionary, but a teacher of mathematics, physics and science to high school students attached to the SOAM. His guiding principles were 'Creating understanding between different cultures' and 'Building bridges between East and West'. While in Qingdao, Dr Rieder collected a wide variety of Chinese art. The objects in the collection thus offer a unique window into the type of antiques that were on the market in Qingdao in the second quarter of the 20th century. As well as demonstrating his passion for Chinese art, his collection also reveals the personal friendships Dr Rieder forged with local artists, some of whom he knew from his teaching activities. Dr Rieder had a scholarly approach to studying his collection. Alongside many of his objects, meticulous notes can sometimes be found detailing his art historical commentaries. The collection was hence Dr Rieder's gateway to the history and culture of China. Objects from the collection were exhibited at the Kunsthaus in Interlaken, Switzerland in 2006 and 2018. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 541

Full title: A Chinese blue and white 'Hatcher cargo' bottle vase, Transitional periodDescription:H.: 37,5 cmÊ The Hatcher Cargo :The Hatcher Cargo was the first salvaged ceramics cargo from a shipwreck to come on to the market. It was dispersed during several auctions by Christie`s, in Amsterdam in 1984 and 1985. Still today it remains one of the most important cargoes of shipwreck ceramics ever recovered, despite the lack of historical evidence recorded by the salvage team. Two porcelain covers dated 1643 helped date the wreck but this needed corroborating to give a firm date of the wreck and its cargo. The dating of the porcelain from the Hatcher Cargo is based on several elements. Firstly, the ceramics recovered form a coherent group, in other words they appear to all have been made at the same time. Secondly comparative dating was used to corroborate the date of the porcelain. For example, blue and white porcelain dishes decorated with a coiled serpent recovered from the Hatcher Cargo match an important dish from the fall of the Ming dynasty, formerly in the Percival David Foundation, now at the British Museum London, this dish can be dated to 1644 - 1645. Other comparative dating is also consistent with the presumed date of the porcelain. However, the most important dating reference remains the two covers recovered from the wreck datable by inscription to the spring of 1643. Although the Ming dynasty officially ended in 1644 the transition from the Ming to the beginning of the Qing was messy and protracted. The porcelain made during this period of civil war and chaos is referred to as `Transitional Porcelain`. It covers the period from the last Ming Emperors until the early years of the Kangxi period, which is normally given a date of about 1620 to 1670 . The Hatcher Cargo is a vital dating tool for this previously poorly understood period of Chinese porcelain production. The absence of a condition report does not imply that a lot is in perfect condition. Full title: An exceptionally large Chinese famille rose 'Emperor Yang' dish, YongzhengDescription:Dia.: 55 cmÊ Provenance: A Belgian private collection.Ê Ref.: Emperor Yang of the Sui dynasty (___, r. 606-18) is known for many achievements, such as linking the Yellow and Yangzi Rivers with the man-made Grand Canal, leading successful military campaigns expanding the Sui territory, and being accomplished in the arts. Despite those, Emperor Yang is also considered to have brought disaster to the country and misery to the people late in his life with his unwise rule and decadent and debauched lifestyle with his concubines. In the West Park, outside Luoyang, his consorts (wives who ranked lower than his primary wife, the empress) often organised his concubines to do equestrian performances and variety shows to entertain the emperor and please his inflated ego.Ê One of the best known of these vignettes was the procession of Lady Wang Zhaojun (___, c. 52 – c. 15 BCE) in a moonlit night. (Lady Wang Zhaojun was one of the legendary Four Beauties of Ancient China. She had been in the harem of Emperor Yuan of the Western Han dynasty [___, 206 BCE – 8 CE]. He eventually sent her off by horseback in a procession to marry a Central Asian tribal chieftain.) The elderly Emperor Yang is often depicted enthusiastically observing his elegant court ladies showing off their riding skills in the spirit of Lady Wang, while anticipating further antics to follow.Ê This scene has often been mistaken as "female generals of the Yang family'(____) by many art historians. However, Dr Yibin Ni has found that historical woodblock illustrations such as that of the novel Romance of Sui and Tang (____), and New-Year prints such as Wang Zhaojun's Galloping Horses (______) bear similar scenes with clear written titles which reveal that the scene is actually meant to be a cautionary tale for rulers. Chu Renhuo (___)'s Romance of Sui and Tang fictionalises the historical events leading to the fall of the Sui dynasty and the subsequent rise of the Tang. (source: tutuhaoyi.com)Ê - Jeffrey P. Full title: An Armenian enamelled silver cup and saucer, 18th C.Description:Dia.: 17 cm (the saucer) Dia.: 9,5 cm - H.: 5 cm (the cup)ÊRef.:- Christie's, London, April 21, 2016, lot 198, for a similar set. (link available on rm-auctions.com)- 'Armenian Patrons for Chinese Commodities. Trade Networks and Cultural Exchange across Asia', George Manginis, Benaki Museum, where the author writes: 'There is a cup in the Musee Armenien de France which can be safely associated with a known patriarch (catholicos) of the Armenian Apostolic Church. It is decorated with a coat of arms crowned by an Armenian-style belfry. It is surrounded by two putti seemingly half-submerged in a baptismal font. Two anthropomorphic angels act as supporters and step on an eagle with outstretched wings. The monogram within the coat of arms consists of the letters GhKS / KThK separated by a bishop"s crozier with a cross on top; they are the abbreviated form of (Gh[ou]k[a]s K[a]th[oghi]k[os]). The eagle is the emblem of the Armenian Catholicate.Ê The set was commissioned for the Catholicos Ghoukas I Karnetsi (1722-1799). Born in Karin, present-day Erzurum in Anatolia, Ghoukas became bishop of this town before rising to the highest rank in the Armenian Apostolic Church in 1780 and moving to Etchmiadzin (Vagharshapat), also within the Ottoman Empire. He was a patron of the arts and during his tenure the Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin was decorated with wall paintings by Hovnatan Hovnatanian (approximately 1730-1801), member of a prominent family of Armenian painters. Ghoukas was the head of the Armenian community, or millet, in the Ottoman Empire. He was responsible for fellow Armenians in both spiritual and secular domains. The status of his countrymen within the Empire varied at that time, but the more affluent and sophisticated among them were able to commission exotic trinkets and indulge in extravagant fashions, for example Chinese export art.Ê Furthermore, for most of the eighteenth century, the Ottoman trade in imported luxury goods was controlled by wealthy Armenians in Constantinople and other cities, and Chinese porcelain was particularly important among these goods. It is also possible that the porcelain bowl, as well as the silver ones, were ordered for Ghoukas by the Madras Armenian community, which could also have commissioned the Beglarian enamels through their East India Company connections.'The absence of a condition report does not imply that a lot is in perfect condition.
