A Chinese turquoise-ground fahua-glazed baluster vase, meipingMing dynasty, 16th centuryOutlined in shallow relief and enamelled in aubergine, pale yellow and deep blue with two figures under a pine tree and beside a dwelling, the shoulders adorned with large ruyi-heads enclosing lotus blooms, with upright lappet borders encircling the foot.30cm high.明十六世紀 松石綠地琺華人物故事圖紋梅瓶On fahua-decorated ceramics, thin, raised slip lines are used to outline areas of the decoration. Once fired, enamels are applied and the raised slip lines inhibit different coloured enamels from flowing into each other. This style on stoneware or porcelain resembles cloisonné metalwork. It is unusual to have turquoise enamel as the prominent colour, as deep blue is often favoured. Cf. For a vase with similar decoration but with a deep blue ground see Sotheby’s, Important Chinese Art, 3rd November 2021, lot 156. Condition Report: general expected firing imperfections including some crazing, with multiple 0.5-5cm raised slip lines chipped off, upper body broken off in several sections and restored with associated overpainting.

A bracket is missing to each side of the stand, the ruyi handle to the right side of the stand has been restored. Expected staiing, scratching to the wood stand commensurate with age.

He chose a career in the military, enlisting in the Regimen of the Crown and later in the naval battalions, soon rising through the ranks to become governor of the South China Sea in 1743, then Governor of Chile two years later, and Governor General of the Philippines between 1750-1754.This plate comes from the first of two services ordered by him, probably when he first arrived in Manila in 1750.This service is illustrated by Jorge Welsh & Rocio Diaz in Chinese Armorial for Spain (Jorge Welsh Books, London and Lisbon, November, 2010, n. 10, pp. 130-133), with a cup from the V&A and a plate from a private collection.A number of pieces from this service are in museum collections worldwide, including the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas (Madrid), the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), The Museo Historico de Acapulco – Fuerte de San Diego (see, Porcelain de la Compana de Indias para Mexico, exhibition catalogue Instituto national de Antropologica, Historia Mexico City, 2002, p. 74).Condition Report: Rim hairline, approx 10cm long. A set from the same hoard was exhibited: Mao: Art For The Masses, Revolutionary Art of the Mao Zedong Era, 1950-1976, National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, May 2003 - March 2004, cat. no. 32.A hoard of 400 bisque porcelain busts of Chairman Mao were discovered on the Sino-Tibetan border in an area regarded as the inspiration for Shangri-La.Originally intended for distribution throughout the South Eastern corner of Tibet, they were packed into baskets and transported by horse to Zhong Dian on the Yunnan Tibet border. The baskets were stored awaiting distribution in a police station but never made it any further, languishing forgotten until 1998 when the building was destroyed by an earthquake. The busts miraculously survived, protected by their transit baskets and straw wadding.The design of the bust was officially sanctioned, being the only sculptural image of Mao made for distribution to official buildings in China. Mixed selection of Asian remnants separated from art objects due to damage, including four jade snuff bottle stoppers together with two others, a hardstone and cloisonne example, a marble size rock crystal ball, a similar sized pierced and carved green jade bead and a miniature example, a red dice form tassel weight and a pair of egg-shaped possibly carnelian tassel weights, an amethyst pebble and a mixed selection of porcelain, cloisonné, wood and lacquer vessel lids and various other Asian parts for Japanese and Chinese art subjects (34) All with signs of wear consistent with age and use. Some pieces with chips. Some pieces with crazing.
