Lot 193

A Worcester porcelain 'Beckoning Chinaman' mug, c.1755-58, of cylindrical form with grooved loop handle, painted in bright enamels with a Chinese figure gesturing with one arm towards an exotic bird, the figure standing near to a fanciful rocky outcrop, the reverse of the mug painted with a spray of peony and other flowers, 12.4cm highFootnotes: Note: The primary 'Beckoning Chinaman' figure on this mug is likely to have been copied from a Chinese famille verte original, perhaps one of the 'Eight Drunken Immortals of the Tang Dynasty', although the floral design on the reverse is more reminiscent of Indianische Blumen than Chinese decoration, and on some examples the flowering branch is replaced by figures of a woman and child. Despite suggestions that this scheme originated in Meissen or Vienna porcelain, it is more likely to have evolved independently at Worcester. The colourful palette of the enamels is similar to some early Longton Hall porcelain and other white glazed Staffordshire porcelain, and possibly an indication that Staffordshire decorators brought this style to Worcester.    Condition Report: Overall in good decorative order. The interior base of the mug and grooves of the handle with some old surface dirt, and further dirt marks around the exterior and decoration. No obvious damages or restoration detected.
