A Chinese porcelain jar of oviform painted in blue with a carp, kylin and a dragon in three circular panels reserved on a broad ribbed band between two rows of alternating cloud scrolls and precious objects, with carved and pierced hardwood cover, 22.5 cm high overall, six character marks for Chenghua in concentric rings, Kangxi.
A rare delftware spice or tobacco jar, probably Lambeth, with associated cover, later enamelled with bands of flowers and foliage in green, blue and red, c.1710-20, some damages, the cover Chinese porcelain, 22.5cm. (2) Cf. Anthony Ray, English Delftware Pottery, pl.66 for a jar of similar shape.
An interesting collection of Chinese teawares, comprising thirty three teabowls and twenty two saucers, variously decorated with horses, figures, landscapes, armorials and flowers, reign and hall marks to some, some damages. (55) This collection was assembled as part of an understanding of how Chinese porcelain decoration influenced the later wares of English porcelain manufacturers and, later still, the blue and white printed pieces of the late 18th and 19th centuries.
* A Chinese porcelain soup plate, decorated with the Judgment of Paris, another painted with shrimps, fish and flowers, a Chinese shallow bowl painted with a bird sitting on a fruiting branch, two Samson plates painted with cockerels and a Japanese Kakiemon small plate, 18th and 19th centuries, 22.5cm max. (6) Provenance: from a distinguished private European collection.
* An unusual collection of teawares, including Italian porcelain European-subject Chinese, painted with Chinoiserie scenes and traders in harbours after Meissen, and with Oriental flowers and foliage, 2nd half 18th century. Comprising: three teabowls and saucers, two covered cups, four teabowls and two coffee cups. Provenance: from a distinguished private European collection.
* Three German porcelain cups and saucers, one Furstenberg painted with Chinese figures, one Ludwigsburg decorated with a hunter and a stag being pursued by hounds, one Berlin painted with a dwarf riding on the back of a tortoise, and a Frankenthal teabowl and saucer with osier moulded borders, 18th century, 13cm max. (8) Provenance: from a distinguished private European collection.
Chinese export porcelain Fitzhugh pattern armorial part service, Qian long, each piece with crest and motto strap, "LAUS VIRTUTIS ACTIO", within a circular medallion of mythical beasts, lattice reserves surrounded by flowers, foliage and utensils, comprising a navette-shape tureen base (with hairline cracks), width 28cms, (11"), a pair of oval stands, four shallow circular dishes, (rim chips) and twelve dessert plates, (7 chipped), together with pierced oval dish of similar pattern, 25cms, (10"), (20). Provenance: Margaret, Lady Gretton, Uffold Old Rectory, Lincolnshire, sale on the premises, Heathcote,Ball & Co., May 2000 and Lot 113. Footnote: The crest and motto is that of Rawson of South Yorkshire and Lancashire, (see David S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, volume II, page 544). The author notes: "This is the only service with British arms known with Fitzhugh pattern in green enamel.
Pair of Chinese export porcelain famille rose octagonal plates, Qianlong, painted with flowers and foliage, within a lambrequin band, (chipped), width 22cms, (8½"), four Chinese export porcelain plates, decorated in underglazed blue and iron red, (hairline cracks), diameter 23cms, (9") and two other octagonal plates, (8).
