A 19th Century Chinese blue and white porcelain bowl decorated with figures on a bridge and willow amongst waterside buildings with boats highlighted with gilding and panels of green to the trees and grass etc raised on a circular foot 19.5 cm diameter x 9 cm deep together with three Chinese blue and white prunus blossom decorated ginger jars and covers, each with blue concentric marks to base 15 cm high CONDITION REPORTS The bowl has several large hairline cracks and significant wear to the gilding throughout and other decoration. A couple of small chips to the foot and a star crack to the base. The ginger jars - one lid is broken and has been re-glued. One jar has significant firing faults / cracks running through the main body. General wear and tear conducive with age and use. See images for further detail.

John Wilkes and Lord Mansfeld: a Chinese export porcelain small cup painted with portraits within armorial type cartouche above ribboned inscriptions and entitled ‘Arms & Liberty’, circa 1768, 61mm. * Wilkes a radical, was a proponent of civil liberties and American independence. He had been tried in absentia before Lord Mansfield but refusing to return to Britain he was outlawed. Such was the interest in his trial also his support form America, with whom Britain subsequently went to war, a number of satires were produced and copied onto Chinese porcelain, entitled both ‘Wilkes & Liberty’ and ‘Arms & Liberty’. See Minneapolis Institute of Art, gallery G209 and Sotheby’s sale of Americana, 20th January 2012, lot 227 for similarly inscribed bowls also Willett, numbers 491 and 492 for pieces inscribed ‘Wilkes & Liberty’.
