A DERBY ARMORIAL PLATE, C1821 enamelled with the arms of Gresley quartering those of Wastney with Bowyer in pretence, in chinoiserie border with crest, 22.5cm diam, red printed circular BLOOR DERBY mark, 10 and 24 in red A Derby replacement for the Chinese armorial service c1735 commissioned by Sir Thomas Gresley 4th Baronet of Drakelow. He married in 1719 Dorothy co-heir of Sir William Bowyer, Bt. The present plate is likely to have been one of several made at the same time as the Derby service for Sir Roger Gresley, 8th Baronet who married in 1821 Sophia Catherine Coventry, daughter of the 7th Earl of Coventry. A CHINESE IMARI PORCELAIN ARMORIAL TEAPOT AND COVER, TWO SIDE HANDLED JUGS AND COVERS AND A PLATE, C1716 plate 22cm diam Commissioned by Matthew Martin Captain of the "Marlborough", a thirty two gun East Indiaman which was at Canton in 1716. The side handled jugs are a rare shape; see Howard (D S), Chinese Armorial Porcelain, 1974, p176 (illustration from a 1968 Sotheby & Co sale catalogue). ++Teapot broken and restuck. Plate with hairline crack at 3 o'clock issuing from a tiny rim chip, the handle of one of the jugs broken and riveted back into position, the other jug with V shaped chip above hip, both covers with small rim chips/fritting; typical wear, no recent or professional restoration
