Lot 53

A pair of Chinese famille rose porcelain bowls, Qianlong period, 18th century. Painted and enamel decoration with a seated figure and a child holding a bird, in a fenced garden before a large flowering tree, width 21.5cm, depth 3.7cm. (2)Provenance: The Michael J. Hickman Collection. Bought in Cornwall from the early 1970's to early 1980's.Neither bowl has restoration, each has star cracking (see images) Decoration is good with little wear to the gilding. Thier are no chips and no hairlines other than the faint star cracks.

With painted mandarin palette and decorated with seven figures in a landscape, height 24.5cm, width 18cm, depth 12cm.From the personal collection of the late Graham Pedley who owned an antique shop in Truro, Cornwall from 1964-1983.We can see no restoration. There are various minor damages and we have uploaded images of these. They include a spout chip, and handle fritting.

The alternating panels painted with figures in a landscape and calligraphy, raised on six small feet, red seal to base, height 10.5cm, width 11cm, depth 9.5cm.West Cornwall private seller, by family descent. The vendor inherited items from her great grandfather Captain John Dewar (ship master). He was born in Shanghai in 1866 and died in 1950. His wife Susan Smith Oudney (1875-1967) whose father was William Oudney a master mariner owned two clipper ships including 'The Coach Inn'. John and Susan married in Shanghai in 1896.small repair on top, three small chips on top and four small chips on lower part.

Two Chinese Imari porcelain plates, 18th century. Diameter 23cm, a Chinese blue and white porcelain plate, Qianlong period, 23.5cm and six various porcelain dishes, 18th/19th century. (9) Maurice Jenkins (1933-2022). North Cornwall collector. Maurice was a lifetime collector and started in the 1950s. He opened a shop in Liskeard in the 1970s called Canon Hill Antiques. He visited a number of Middle Eastern countries in his lifetime including Egypt in the late 1970's when his interest in Islamic and Asian antiques began. He was a man with an eye for quality and a love of antiques, history and travel who purchased privately and at auction over the decades. Over a lifetime of purchasing privately and at auction, he created an eclectic ensemble of collections reflecting his interests. He died a few weeks before his 90th birthday and was still buying until that time. Chips to brown rim one plate, crack and repair to one other plate, crack and chip to bowl, other plate in good condition.

Coverted to a table lamp, painted and gilt decorated with two Chinese court figures and trees, height 45cm, width 14.5cm.This beautifully-decorated lamp is in good order, though will obviously require rewiring. Some of the gilt has rubbed, but decoration is still clean and fresh and there are no chips evident.

A Chinese blue and white prunus blossom porcelain vase, late 19th century. The cover surmounted by a dog of fo, above shaped opposing panels enclosing precious objects, Kangxi four character mark, height 31.5cm, width 11cm.The right ear of the Fo dog on the finial has a small chip. Glaze chip to his tail on the left hand side. Glaze pitting to the lid and body in areas, otherwise good antique condition.

A Chinese cloisonne circular jar and cover, late 19th century. The cover decorated with a single dragon, the body with two dragons chasing the flaming pearl, height 9.5cm, diameter 9.2cm and a Chinese closionne floral decorated ginger jar and cover, early 20th century, height 16.5cm, diameter 13.5cm. (2)The Vandekar family established their internationally renowned antiques dealership in Amsterdam before moving to London in 1916. They specialized in the decorative arts of the 17th-20th century with a particular interest in 18th-19th century European and Chinese ceramics. In the 1970s and 80s, Michael Beard worked as a ceramics expert in the London showroom of Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge, travelling internationally to trade shows and antiques fairs, and helping with the launch of the New York branch of Vandekar in 1982. There is no surprise that he leaves in his estate some beautiful examples of porcelain, ceramics, and objets d’art. When Michael retired to Cornwall around 1988 he settled at first in St Ives, where he became a prominent patron of the arts and a devoted member of the Old Cornwall Society. On his death he has left a collection boasting some fine examples of Cornish painting, sculpture, studio pottery, and decorative chinoiserie.
