Lot 80
19th century AD. A shallow pale blue-glazed dish with basal ring, concentric blue rings surrounding a floral motif. 269 grams, 17.5cm (7"). Private collection, North London, UK. The Tek Sing (True Star) wreck is one of the famous recovery stories of the 20th century. Sailing from the port of Xiamen (then known as Amoy) in February 1822 the vessel Tek Sing was bound for Jakarta, Indonesia laden with porcelain goods and 1600 Chinese emigrants. The captain decided to pass through the Gaspar Strait, between the Bangka-Belitung Islands, and ran aground on a reef. The vessel sank in about 100 feet of water. The next morning, February 7, an English East Indiaman captained by James Pearl, passing through the same waters, encountered debris and some survivors and managed to rescue about 190 of the latter. Fine condition.

A Chinese porcelain moonflask each side painted with dragons amongst flowers on a imperial yellow enameled and florally decorated ground with pink dragon handles. h. 22cm CONDITION REPORT: rubbing to enamels and gilding, otherwise good condition. No apparent chips or cracks, no obvious restoration but this lot has not been inspected with a UV light.

A Bristol porcelain teapot and cover, decorated flowering branches (damages) and three pieces of Chinese Imari (damages) Condition Report: Bristol teapot - Chip out of cover edge. Two sections of the teapot have been broken and glued back in place, a hair crack issues from the area. Tiny chip to tip of spout. Small hairline to rim. The three imari pieces are all damaged, glued and with some losses. Poor.

Some Y shape cracks to base, otherwise appears ok. Approx 8" high. Approx. 10 1/2 diameter.

Pair of Chinese porcelain cylindrical vases with under glazed blue scenic decoration together with a Chinese porcelain bowl decorated in under glaze blue with a dragon amongst clouds. Two character marks to base. (3) CONDITION REPORT; Cylinder vases - 5" high. Bowl - 6" diameter/ Bowl - Chips and vertical hairline crack to bowl. Vases - Some crazing but overall no obvious damage.

CONDITION REPORT; Size - 14" high approx. x 9" across approx. Blue tac stuck to underneath of cover. Some light wear in places. Overall appears OK.

Three pieces of Chinese porcelain: comprising a soft paste inkwell of bell shaped form, painted in blue with cracked ice and prunus, 11 cm diameter, bears paper label 'Donaldson Collection from Brighton Museum', [some staining]; a small oviform jar embossed with scattered white blooms and leaves on a dark blue ground, 8 cm high; together with a small baluster jar painted in blue with panels of peony, foliage and rocks, beneath a simple fretted band, artemisia leaf mark to base, 11 cm high, Kangxi and later.

A large Chinese armorial famille rose punch bowl: the exterior painted en grisaille with the arms and crest of Taylor together with two famille rose vignettes of seated figures in a landscape with rockwork, the interior with a floral bouquet and crest below a gilt floral border, Qianlong, 39.5 cm diameter. * Provenance. By direct family descent. See David Sanctuary Howard 'Chinese Armorial Porcelain' vol II, page 235/L5 for the arms of Taylor of Beaconsfield, Denbury and Ogwell in Devon, copied from a bookplate for Joseph Taylor dated 1759. The bowl was almost certainly made for Dr.Joseph Taylor of Denbury. In 1755 his daughter married Arthur Holdsworth, the son of Arthur Holdsworth, a well known merchant of Dartmouth and Governor of Dartmouth Castle.
