A porcelain coffee cup, late 18th century, probably Chinese porcelain but European decorated, painted in polychrome with a scene of a cockerel, hen, other birds and flowers, the cup with a distinctive wishbone handle, unmarked, 6.5cm high Footnote: We believe this cup to be a Chinese-made, European decorated replacement for a missing or broken piece from a Meissen or similar service. The scene of a cockerel with a hen and flowers, is based on a print originally by Francis Barlow (1626 - 1704), an influential English painter, etcher and illustrator. See included image taken from The Online Tate Gallery; 'After Francis Barlow, 'Cock; Hen; Chicken; Dove', date not known, engraving and etching on paper' for a similar design and inspiration of the theme.
A Caughley coffee cup, and saucer painted in blue with the Chantilly Sprigs pattern, the cup of plain form, with circular section Chinese-style stand off handle, disguised foot rim, with associated blue line borders, cup 6.5cm high, saucer 13cm diameter, unmarked (2) Saucer bears Ex. J&S Wyatt Collection paper label. See CB&W, page 73 for a discussion of the pattern where it is noted that at this stage Caughley was copying the French underglaze blue painted patterns originally developed at Chantilly in around 1770. The design soon spread across Europe and was widely copied on both porcelain and earthenware. Caughley used it on shapes which were predominantly in a Continental style.

One of pair with repair, prunus bowl with old stapled repair. 15.25cm and 16.25cm respectively. Provenance: the Rev. Jonathan Lees of the London Missionary Society who served in Tientsin between c. 1862 and 1900 and thereafter by descent.
