The present cabinet is part of a room created specifically for Alfred Morrison’s extensive collection of Chinese porcelain and enamels, which included many of the finest objects from the Summer Palace at Peking (see Christie’s, Chinese Porcelains and Enamels from The Alfred Morrison Collection, Fonthill House, 9 November 2004). The obituary of Owen Jones in The Builder (9 May 1874, pp. 383-85) describes the room as built, decorated and fitted up by Jackson & Graham ‘from Mr Jones’s designs, in the Cinque-cento style, of which it forms an exquisite example. The chimney-piece and fittings are entirely of ebony, inlaid with ivory, and the ceilings of wood, panelled and inlaid, the mouldings being black and gold’. Eminent among Victorian decorators and cabinetmakers the firm of Jackson and Graham was active between 1836 and 1885. Established by Thomas Charles Jackson and Peter Graham the firm grew to occupy substantial premises in London’s Oxford Street with a range of fabricating departments from cabinet-making, through carving, gilding and upholstery to interior decoration and bespoke furniture commissions.
