Surface does show some areas of scratching. Colours still vivid and bright. Small filled chip to the foot rim.

Small underglaze firing crack located beneath one of the butterfly's. Some enamel and surface scratching. Some small but minor enamel nibbles towards the foot otherwise overall appearance is good.

A RARE CHINESE IMPERIAL BLUE AND WHITE 'DRAGON' JAR SIX CHARACTER WANLI MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1573-1620 The sides decorated with two ferocious five-clawed dragons chasing flaming pearls amidst clouds and a mountainous landscape, all beneath a register of scrolling lingzhi and above crashing waves resting upon an overlapping band of plantain leaves, with a six character mark arranged in two columns enclosed by double circles to the base, together with a reticulated wood stand and cover, with a paper label for Bluett & Sons, London, to the underside of the stand, 12.5cm. (3) Provenance: supplied to Bluett's by E Gordon Lowder, and later purchased by Mr Charles Sydney Cheston, painter, d.1960, and thence by descent. Recorded in Charles Cheston's 1946 catalogue as purchased from Bluett & Sons in 1924. Bluett's letter to Lowder of 27th January 1926 encloses a statement of account which includes payment of £12:10 for this vase; cf. R Davids & D Jellinek, Provenance, p.302 for further information about E Gordon Lowder. Cf. A PALACE SIZED WHITE JADE ‘CASSIA, LINGZHI AND ROCKS’ VASE AND COVERChina, 20th centuryThis palace sized lidded archaistic vessel of facetted baluster shape is topped by a dome-shaped lid with a chrysanthemum flower shaped finial, its neck with two open-worked S-shaped handles. It majestically stands on a rocky base enhanced with fungus of immortality (lingzhi) and from which is emanating a branch of cassia flowers which naturalistically grows over the front part of the body up to the neck. The below of the vase is also worked to render rocks. The vase is carved out a large single piece of nephrite jade. Its inner part is very well hollowed. Very well hollowed. H: 6 cm Weight: 92,4 grams  Notes: 1. The bear (xiong 熊) is not often depicted on Chinese charms and amulets but it is a powerful animal that the Chinese believe can invoke fear in evil spirits just as well as humans. It is sometimes shown, like on our snuffbottle, with an eagle because eagle or hawk (ying 鹰) and bear (xiong 熊) together sound just like the word "hero" (yingxiong 英雄). 2.
