A fine Chinese celadon-glazed vase, Qing Dynasty, Qianlong mark and period, the baluster body moulded with vertical ribs, rising from a tall slightly spreading foot to a flaring rim, the exterior applied with a pale celadon glaze stopping neatly at the foot and leaving the rim white, Qianlong Minyao six character mark in underglaze blue, 35cm high, with hardwood box Provenance: Sheldon Estate, Hungerford until 2017 and then to the current owner. A Chinese tea-dust glazed six-necked vase, liulianping, with five baluster-form vases enclosing the inner central and tallest vase, rising to narrow cylindrical necks, each with a single raised filet and terminating in an everted mouth and tapering to form a joined base, covered overall in a tea-dust glaze, incised four character Qianlong seal mark, 16cm high Provenance: Purchased privately in Paris by the current owner who was informed it had formed part of the estate of the late C.T. Loo (Ching Tsai Loo) who died in 1957, although this information is by repute only. TWO CHINESE PORCELAIN 'LANDSCAPE' CUPS SIX CHARACTER IRON-RED JIAQING MARKS AND OF THE PERIOD 1796-1820 One with a four character inscription reading yun shan wan zhong, the other inscribed xu ting yan liu, each with a gilded rim, a short foot and the body painted with a waterside landscape to one side and a poem to the reverse, 9cm. A CHINESE FAMILLE VERTE DISH KANGXI 1662-1722 Depicting a scene from the Romance of the Western Chamber, a paper label for the J F Woodthorpe Collection, 21cm. Provenance: from the collection of J F Woodthorpe, later the Follander collection, Belgium, and then Christie's Amsterdam, 20th/21st November 2007, lot 189. John Frederick Woodthorpe (1897-1966) was a client of Bluett's from 1948-1960. Much of his collection was sold at Sotheby's from 1954 through to 1961. His label can still be seen on a selection of high quality Ming and Qing porcelain. The small disc in iron-red to the left of the pavilion indicates that this scene takes place at night and is thought to be an episode from the 12th century play, the Romance of the Western Chamber. The play tells the story of the love of Cui Ying Ying for a young scholar, Zhang Sheng. On this dish, it is difficult to be certain as to whether the scene represents a meeting between the two principal characters or between her maid, Hong Niang and Zhang Sheng.
A CHINESE ORNAMENTAL PANEL 18TH/19TH CENTURY Set with three porcelain plaques depicting a boy and a buffalo, a farmer and an attendant and with two square seals, one inscribed Tang Ying zhi yin, the other Jun Gong, set on a black granular ground within a later hardwood frame, the reverse with black lacquer, 70cm x 81cm overall. Provenance: Christie's London, 17th June 2003, lot 66. Cf. A CHINESE WUCAI MONTH CUP SIX CHARACTER KANGXI MARK AND PROBABLY OF THE PERIOD With a deep body and a flared rim, the exterior painted with a blossoming hibiscus tree in a stylised landscape, the reverse inscribed in underglaze blue with a poem reading qing xiang he su yu, jia se chu qing yan, and a seal with the single character shang, all supported on a short foot, 5cm. A CHINESE MING-STYLE DOUCAI 'CHICKEN' CUP PROBABLY 18TH CENTURY With a gently curving body decorated to each side with a cockerel and a hen looking after their chicks between ornamental rockery and floral sprays, a six character Chenghua mark within a double square to the base, 9.1cm. Provenance: Hong Kong private collection, purchased in 1980s. Cf. A PAIR OF CHINESE IMPERIAL FAMILLE ROSE PORCELAIN SPOONS FOUR CHARACTER IRON-RED TONGZHI MARKS AND OF THE PERIOD 1862-74 Painted with five bats in different colours and a ruyi-head border, the underside with the sanduo, together with another pair of spoons with yellow prunus branches and swallows in flight, six character Daoguang marks and of the period 1821-1850, 18cm max. A CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE 'BARAGON TUMED' BOWL 20TH CENTURY Painted to the exterior with deities and animals, divided by gold animal masks with suspended tassels, all between bands of shou characters and the bajixiang, with lotus petals surrounding a double vajra to the well, a two character iron-red Baragon Tumed mark in Mongolian script the base, 22cm. Cf. S Jennings, Later Chinese Porcelain, pl.CXII for another bowl of the same design. The original service was made for the daughter of the Daoguang Emperor, who married a Mongolian prince of the Tumed banner.
A CHINESE FAMILLE ROSE CONG-SHAPED VASE REPUBLIC PERIOD Painted with pheasants, chickens, a peacock and a hwamei bird, perched on rocks and in tree branches amongst peonies, roses, magnolias, hibiscus and prunus, a four character Shen De Tang zhi to the base, 26cm. Shen De Tang, the Hall of Prudent Virtue, completed in 1831, was Emperor Daoguang's main residence at the Imperial Palace. Porcelain ware produced for this palace bear the Shen De Tang Zhi mark.
A RARE CHINESE IMPERIAL BLUE-GROUND ZHADOU SIX CHARACTER YONGZHENG MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1723-35 With a wide flared rim, decorated with an even dark blue glaze, the interior white, all raised on a short flared foot, 12.5cm.
