A Chinese yellow-ground 'Magpie and Prunus' bowl: finely painted with magpies perched and flying amongst branches of flowering plum on a lemon-yellow ground, Tongzhi/Guangxu 12cm [flat chip to inside of rim, mark erased].* Provenance The above lot was acquired either by Edward George Pellew Mayers [1840-1911] during military service in China and Japan between 1870 and 1880 or his son Edward Courtenay Pellew Mayers [1878-1933] who visited China in 1911. A Chinese famille rose armorial bowl with the arms of the Anti-Gallican Society: painted with scattered floral sprays, the arms on both sides showing the figure of St.George thrusting his spear into the Royal Arms of France with the motto 'For Our Country' below, the supporters a lion and an eagle, Qianlong, 24cm diameter [some wear to gilt inner border].*Notes Literature. David Sanctuary Howard 'Chinese Armorial Porcelain' vol II, page 347/P20.* Notes The Anti-Gallican Society was founded in London in 1745 with headquarters in the Strand 'To promote British Manufacturers, extend the Commerce of England, and discourage the Introduction of French modes and the Importation of French commodities'. It's popularity fell away in the early 1760s.
