Keith Broomfield - an Armstrong Whitworth F.K.8 of No 8 Squadron RFC, with pilot Capt F.M.F West V.C and Lf J Haslam as an observer, R.A.F Museum print, signed by both crew members, framed, overall dimensions 58cm x 40cmNotes: On 10 August 1918, the third day of the Battle of Amiens, the Allies hoped to advance to a line running north from Roye, on the Amiens-Soissons road, through Chaulnes and Bray to Dernancourt, just south of Albert. However, German resistance was stiffening, and none of these goals was to be achieved until the German army withdrew at the end of the month. On 10 August 1918, Captain F M F West, in an Armstrong F8 with his observer Lieutenant John Haslam, was on a reconnaissance patrol north-east of Roye when he spotted German troops massing for a counter-attack. He was then set upon by German planes but, despite the fact that his left leg had been almost severed by bullets, managed to make it back to base to make his report. The injured leg was subsequently amputated.Victoria Cross Citation: "Captain West, while engaging hostile troops at a low altitude far over the enemy lines, was attacked by seven aircraft. Early in the engagement one of his legs was partially severed by an explosive bullet, and fell powerless into the controls, rendering the machine for the time unmanageable. Lifting his disabled leg, he regained control of the machine, and, although wounded in the other leg, he, with surpassing bravery and devotion to duty, manoeuvred his machine so skilfully that his observer was enabled to get several good bursts into the enemy machines, which drove them away. Captain West, then, with rare courage and determination, desperately wounded as he was, brought his machine over our lines and landed safely. Exhausted by his exertions, he fainted, but on regaining consciousness insisted on writing his report. (gazetted on 26th July, 1918.)"

(28 total) Example transcriptions include:Military Medal - 31693 Cpl (L/Sgt) Edward Hawthorne Elliott, 19 A/Tps.Coy. (N.Z.) for his actions 'in Crete on the morning of the 23rd May ... in carrying a wounded man to safety. Ellliott moved over a very exposed area of ground through heavy enemy fire to rescue Sapper E.T. Taylor who had been wounded while stalking an enemy post... Throughout his actions in Greece and Crete, Elliott was cool and daring, and an example to the men under his command.' Distinguished Conduct Medal - 7921 Lance/Sergt. Victor David Kirk, 4th Inf. N.Z'throughout his operations, his N.C. showed exceptional gallantry, coolness and skill. He was in the leading platoon during the attack on MALEME on May 22 and with his section fought his way forward in continuous fighting for over two miles, displaying the utmost resolution, and repeatedly rushing and destroying the MG posts. He then accompanied an officer on a very dangerous journey through 600 yards of enemy-occupied ground, shooting a German on the way and bringing safely back about 100 men who would otherwise have been cut off. At GALATOS on May 25 when his company was outflanked, he organised a party and led a counter-attack which was completely successful, 44 Germans bring killed of whom Kirl accounted for 11. Being separated from his Company he then with his party joined in the counter attack on GALATOS made by the 23 Bn., disposed of a large number of the enemy and remained in position on the outskirts of the village until 0530 hours next morning when finding that all other troops had withdrawn some hours before he skilfully led out his party and rejoined his unit.'

Hermann Geyer (1882-1946) German General and Knight's Cross winner.A scarce printed booklet entitled Das IX. Korps im Oftfeldzug vom 22. Juni - 31 Dezember 1941 (The IX Corps in the Eastern Campaign from 22nd June - 31st December 1941). Published in 1942 for private circulation, signed by Geyer to the title page and dated 24th December 1942. 162 pages. Some annotations and underlinings in (indelible?) red and black pencil to the text throughout.Notes: General Geyer commanded IX Army Corps under the 4th Army during Operation Barbarossa and the invasion of the Soviet Union. He retired in 1943 and committed suicide in April, 1946. According to Hans Speidel's Aus unserer Zeit, Geyer was devastated by the defeat of Germany in World War II and its disastrous consequences. He blamed himself partly for this development because he thought he hadn't acted decisively enough for the Widerstand (apparently against Hitler). Tormented by guilt, he committed suicide by drowning in the Wildsee, a lake located a few kilometres southwest of his house in Bad Wildbad im Schwarzwald.
