* Edward Seago [1910-1974]- Halftide at Waxham:- Edward Seago studio stamp on reverse of back board watercolour 37.5 x 55cm * Provenance. With Thompson`s Gallery, London *Biography. Edward Brian [Ted] Seago was an English artist who painted both in oils and watercolour. Largely self taught, he did receive some instruction from Sir Alfred Munnings and Bertram Priestman. At 14, he won a Royal Drawing Society award and at 18 years old he joined a travelling show and toured with circuses in Britain and Europe. He continued to paint all this while, becoming well known and popular around the World. Invalided out of the army in 1944, but invited by General Alexander to record the Italian Campaign, in 1945 Colnaghi`s exhibited his war paintings and showed his work annually from that time on. This exhibition and subsequent shows received unprecedented success with large queues before the doors opened. The Queen Mother was a great admirer and collector of Seago`s work. The Duke of Edinburgh invited Seago on a World Tour in `Britannia` in 1956, the paintings of Antartica which were considered to be amongst his best, now hang in Balmoral. He became a member of the RWS in 1959. Seago was a lover of East Anglia, the Norfolk broads and sailing, and was a masterly painter and watercolourist of Broadland. He has had major exhibitions with the Fine Art Society, Richard Green, Portland Gallery and Thomas Gibson. He lived at Ludham in Norfolk, where he died of a brain tumor at the age of 64. In his Will, he requested that one third of his paintings from his studio be destroyed!

-Click here to bid - 1939 Morris Commercial Model CS8 Breakdown Truck Reg.no. MSV 823 Chassis no. CS8 251487 Engine no. OHR248829 This six-cylinder 25hp petrol engined 15cwt truck was supplied new to the Army in 1939 as a mobile office on contract no. V3611. Its life in the Army is unknown, although it is thought few miles were covered, but along with a sister vehicle they were subsequently purchased from a south coast surplus sale by Tilleys of Dorchester and Weymouth. The Howard Brothers, coachbuilders from Middlemarsh who were part of the Tilleys group, main Austin, later BMC agents, converted the body to its present form in 1946. It was then painted chocolate/cream and sign written. The vehicle was actively used by them until 1974. The lorry then fell into disrepair and was discarded only to be bought by the present owner in 1982. He then undertook a full restoration which took eleven years. It is now finished in the Austin livery of stone beige and maroon, sign written with BMC rosettes. Very few of these 6-cylinder versions survive, mostly all as military examples. This Morris was rallied extensively until 2000 and was a well-known vehicle on the circuit, taking in rallies such as the Bournmouth to Bath, the Trans Pennine and the London to Brighton. Ill health now forces the sale of this unique vehicle and any buyer will be richly rewarded for many years to come. It is sold with a V5c.
-Click here to bid - 19?? Austin Champ General Service ‘Cargo Truck’ Reg.no. TAR 26D Chassis no. tba Engine no. tba A British Army specification for a light truck was issued in the late 1940s, inspired by the jeep but able to perform in all areas of the British Army. It was considered important that a British-made vehicle was produced in order to reduce the reliance on US vehicles and the foreign expenditure that entailed. The project was launched in 1947 and by 1951 the Austin Motor Company was awarded the contract to produce 15,000 vehicles. This example is a basic Cargo Truck, so was not fitted with high output generators and additional batteries. We understand that it last ran about three years ago and has been dry-stored ever since. Much work has been carried out over the years including the fitting of a replacement engine sourced from Hursts of Doncaster. In addition a new front axle and a reconditioned rear axle have been fitted. The universal joints have been restored; it has been fitted with new brake cylinders and new brake shoes. The Champ has done very little work since the fitting of these parts. Areas of bodywork have also been replaced where necessary including both outer sills and partial floor pan. There will be some spares sold with this car, which have been collected by the vendor, although these do not indicate that their counterparts require replacing. It is also sold with a starter handle, a wheel brace, a workshop manual and a V5c. This Champ will require re-commissioning following this period of storage.
-Click here to bid - Sankey Military Trailer Reg.no. n/a Chassis no. n/a Engine no. n/a This military trailer was produced to complement the Champ, and is a very good and original example of its type. The angle iron additions are almost certainly army fitted; it is believed that this trailer was modified at the time to carry a bowser. It is shod with virtually new tyres and is in very good useable condition, making it an ideal period accessory to any Champ owner, which is also practical.
-Click here to bid - Army Trailer Reg.no. n/a Chassis no. n/a Engine no. n/a This is also an early military trailer that is believed to have been for carrying ammunition, due to its unusual hinged front gate. Following its original use, it was subsequently owned by the Council, who towed it behind a road roller. This is also a very practical addition to any collection.
SMITH (Emma) Maidens` Trip -- Author`s First Book First printing of this post-war classic describing the author`s life as a working canal boatman in the final years of the Second World War. It is about three girls who go boating during the war, carrying cargo on England`s canals as part of the Ministry of War Transport scheme to provide crews for canal boats. In actuality, women were conscripted to work the canal boats when the boatmen were put into the army so this is part fact and part fiction. Winner of the JOHN LLEWELLYN RHYS MEMORIAL PRIZE, considered a modern classic and reprinted many times. ACCOMPANIED by two holograph letters (4pp) by the author + one envelope addressed in her hand (postmarked 1950) along with several newspaper clippings related to her writings, dealing with this title and her second book `The Far Cry`. Condition: end-leaves slightly foxed, first gathering bumped at lower corner, overall near-fine copy Publisher Place: London Publisher: Putnam & Co. Kros, Jack War in Italy. With the South Africans from Taranto to the Alps 8vo; original blue boards; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pictorial endpapers; pp. xiii + (i) + 318, incl. index; photographs, maps, and reproductions of contemporary artwork. Some spotting to top edge. Near fine condition. `The South African Air Force and ground volunteers stormed into Italy under an invisible banner reading `Avenge Torbuk!` ... Reorganised as an armoured division, re-equipped by the best that the Americans could offer, and trained to perfection at Khatatba in Egypt, they were ready to carry the war to the Germans. It was thus a highly motivated 6th South African Armoured Division and supporting units that joined the Italian ground campaign at Cassino and spearheaded an Allied attack up the middle of the peninsula in spite of the mountains and cruel weather. The impetus of the first attack astonished Eighth Army Headquarters and carried the Divsion out of range of HQ communications. But for General Mark Clark`s disobedience of orders, the Springboks would have taken Rome. They raced on to Civita Castellana, Orvieto, Celleno and Bagnoregio, where astonishing feats of mountaineering caught the defending Germans off their guard. At Chiusi, a company of Cape Town Highlanders were trapped, yet added glory to the battalion`s name as they fought a courageous but hopeless battle. After being first into Florence, the 6th Division, by now attached to the US Fifth Army, pressed on in relentless pursuit through the Apennines in appalling winter weather. Monte Caprara, Monte Salvaro, Monte Stanco and Monte Sole were grimly contested before the plains of northern Italy opened up and victory became a mere formality. ... The vivid canvas of intense action is vividly coloured by the reminiscences of men and women who were there.` Publisher Place: Johannesburg Publisher: Ashanti Publishing Publication Date: 1992 Reserve: $20 Click here to view further details and to bid
Brown, James Ambrose Eagles Strike. The Campaigns of the South African Air Force in Egypt, Cyrenaica, Libya, Tunisia, Tripolitania and Madagascar 1941 - 1943 Volume IV in the series `South African Forces World War II`. 8vo; original blue boards, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. xii + (ii) + 448, incl. index; plates; maps. Trace of spotting to top edge; faint tape stains to pastedowns and reverse of dustwrapper. Very good condition.. `James Ambrose Brown`s Eagles Strike is practically a blow-by-blow account of the air and land battles fought in North Africa between 1941 and 1943. It shows the South African Air Force in action with the famous Desert Air Force of which it was a vital part. Here for the first time the reader will find a narrative of every great land battle of that period - the saga of retreat and advance over a thousand miles of desert - with, for the first time, the part of the air forces related to the total strategy. Here is the fnal emergence of air power, triumphant over the prejudices of army and navy. From Wavell`s early conquest of Graziani`s timid host the great battles are all recounted - the struggles for Tobruk, the failure of the `Crusader` operations, the retreat to El Alamein, the decisive defeat of Rommel at Alam el Halfa and Alamein, the advance to Tripoli with the battles of Mareth, Medenine and Wadi Agarit to the final `Dunkirk` scene.` Publisher Place: Cape Town Publisher: Purnell Publication Date: 1974 Reserve: $35 Click here to view further details and to bid
Agar-Hamilton, J. A. I., and L. C. F. Turner Crisis in the Desert. May - July 1942 8vo; original blue cloth titled in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. x + (iv) + 368, incl. index; several folding maps and battle plans in colours; large folding map at rear; plates; sketch maps in text. Dustwrapper edgeworn, with some archival tape repairs to reverse, and a little rubbed; traces of foxing to edges, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Very good condition. `This book is concerned with the most critical phase of the campaign in the Western Desert. Investigations were begun in 1942 to establish the facts relating to the fall of Tobruk, but in due course the demands of historical perspective required that the field of enquiry should expand to include the German assault on the Gazala Line, with Rommel`s consequent invasion of Egypt, his remarkable victory at Mersa Matruh, and the decisive check to his ambitions at Alamein. The fate of the 2nd South African Division at Tobruk, and the movements of the 1st South African Division between Gazala and El Alamein, require for their appreciation a grasp of the intentions and operations of the Eighth Army, which the authors have attempted to provide, and against this background have been fitted the movement and interplay of the various South African units and formations.` - Preface. Villebois-Mareuil, [Count George de] War Notes. The Diary of Colonel de Villebois-Mareuil, from November 24, 1899, to April 4, 1900 Authorised translation from the Paris Liberté by Frederic Lees. With a preface by E. M. de Vogüé, member of the Académie Française. Second Edition. Crown 8vo; original red cloth, lettered in black to spine and upper cover, with pictorial onlay to upper cover; pp. [iii-xx] + 352. Corners turned; backstrip fragile and sunned, splitting along lower joint; cover rubbed and partially discoloured; front free endpaper and earliest prelims. removed; archival tape reinforcing to hinges; earlier owner`s name signed on title page; edges a little browned; occasional spotting. (Hackett, pp. 83, 194; Mendelssohn II, p. 569) `Translation from the diary of a French officer serving in the Boer army. The entries relate to events in Natal, the siege of Kimberley and the campaign in the Orange Free State. The author was killed in action near Boshof in April 1900.` - R. G. Hackett: South African War Books - An Illustrated bibliography, p. 83. `Villebois seems to have been thoroughly disillusioned before he lost his life at Boshof; a brave and skillful soldier, he appears to have been disgusted with the procrastination of the Boers, and their want of decision, resolution, and union. He thought well of the abilities of De La Rey, but considered that Joubert was a mere politician. He seems to have had a great contempt for the British army and officers before the arrival of Lords Roberts and Kitchener, but speaks of the presumption of the Republicans in thinking that they would defeat these generals as easily as they did some of the previous leaders. He criticises Buller`s operations, but continually draws attention to the very marked `carefulness` of the burghers, of whom he says, `The Boer`s first concern is for his safety.` ` - Mendelssohn. Cloth a little soiled; upper hinge just starting; some moderate spotting and regular light browning throughout. Good condition. (Hackett, p. 128; Mendelssohn I, p. 96) `An account of the advance to Bloemfontein and Pretoria by a correspondent of the Morning Post. The narrative is followed by chapters on `The remaking of an army`. Appendices include - The march of the 6th Division from Modder River to Bloemfontein, statistics in reference to killed and wounded, notes on climate, etc.` - Hackett: South African War Books, p. 10. `A sketch of the South African War (1899-1902), from the departure of Lord Roberts from England to the capture of Pretoria. The author is by no means an optimist, and is often a severe critic, even General French not escaping. At times Mr. Battersby has grave censure for the Boer whom he describes as `a creature of talk, a thing of pretences,` but he relates many touching episodes about them, and is evidently quite unbiassed. The book ends with several chapters on `The Remaking of an Army,` and among the appendices is a note on the climate of the veld.` - Mendelssohn. They Live By The Sword Large octavo (175x250mm) hard backed book in the original publisher’s green cloth binding in Good condition; in a coloured pictorial dust wrapper, in Good+ condition. There are slight signs of shelf wear on the bottom of the boards and what appears as slight insect damage to the top back of the boards and a small patch on the front bottom end-paper; 272 pages, including the index, of which the first ten are of a preliminary nature; 6 pages of black and white photographic plates bound into the text after page 128; maps on the end-papers. It was mainly composed of black troops and NCOs, originating from virtually every tribe in Angola, led by white South African officers and senior NCOs. No form of racism ever appeared in the unit, which was highly successful in overcoming FAPLA, SWAPO and the Cubans, together with their Soviets advisors, in the thick Angolan bush throughout the years of border war.
