LONDON', chequered walnut grips, lanyard mount, and retaining nearly all its original nickel-plated finish. The retailers have kindly confirmed the pistol was probably sold in 1877.

Attributed to William Aikman, 1682-1731, Portrait of Charles, 9th Lord Elphinstone (1676-1738), later inscribed with the identity of the sitter, oil on canvas in a painted oval, 74x62cm.; 29.25x24.5in The sitter was the son of John, 8th Lord Elphinstone. He went to Glasgow University in 1699, before joining the army. He was severely wounded at Agremont in 1708, and he eventually retired from the army in 1720. He married Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir William Primrose, 2nd Bart. in 1702.

Circle of Alexis Simon Belle, 1647-1734, Portrait of Field Marshal, The Hon. James Keith (1696-1758), later inscribed with the identity of the sitter, oil on canvas, 115x88cm.; 45.25x34.75in. The sitter was the second son of William, 9th Earl Marischal and his wife, Lady Mary Drummond, daughter of the 1st Earl of Perth. He served as a Field Marshal in the army of Frederick the Great of Prussia, and fought bravely during the Seven YearsÕ War. He was eventually killed at the Battle of Hochkirck.

Attributed to Sir John Baptist Medina, 1659-1710, Portrait of George Keith, 8th Earl of Marischal (died 1694), later erroneously inscribed with the identity of the sitter, oil on canvas, 116x89cm.; 45.75x35in. The sitter was the son of William Keith, 5th Earl of Marischal, and his wife, Mary, daughter of John Erskine, Earl of Mar. He served in the French army, where he became a colonel. He held a command, ex parte Regis, at the Battle of Preston in 1648, where the royalists were soundly defeated, and again, on 3rd September 1851 at Worcester, where the Scots were overwhelmed by Cromwell. He was taken prisoner and sent to Windsor castle. After his release, he participated in the ceremonial opening of Parliament, riding Ôout before, with a permission cap, and a baton in his handÕ. He married Mary Hay, the daughter of the 2nd Earl of Kinnoull, in 1662. She was Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen. He succeeded his brother, the 6th Earl in 1671.

LNER D/R Poster "Season Tickets On The L.N.E.R. Save Time And Money. An absolutely stunning Poster with image by H.M. Bateman dated 1928. The comical image shows a Dapper dandy holding his season ticket and walking briskly past a queue of travellers waiting at the Booking Office window. The large clock at the top of the image reads 8:49 and the train waiting in the platform has a departure board stating 'Next Train 8:50'. The irate travellers in the queue include a Golfer togged out in tweed plus-fours and carrying his golf clubs. A super poster in extremely good condition and in an old, glazed frame. Ideal for the railway collector, golf collector, ticket collector, clock collector or just as a fantastic conversational piece. NOTE: H M Bateman 1887 - 1970: - 20th century cartoonist and caricaturist born in Australia and brought to England when 2 years of age. He died on Gozo aged 81. During his most prolific years he drew for most of the quality periodicals. Through line and tone he was able to convey the full range of human emotion to maximum comic effect. Frustrated by ill health from army service in the first World War he contributed by raising the spirits of officers and men alike through his inspirational drawings. Throughout the 20's and 30's the popularity of the "Man Who …." Series, published first in the 'Tatler', raised his status to that of the highest paid and most copied humorist of the time. His most famous of all was 'Coughs & Sneezes Spread Diseases'. In retirement he painted quality pictures of the English countryside and Mediterranean life.

Jacques Villon (1875-1963), after Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) "La Montagne Sainte-Victoire au Grand Pin"] Limited edition coloured lithographic print from an edition of 200 (79/200), bearing a later signature for Paul Cezanne and dated "1923", 57cm by 76cm (22 1/2in by 30in), unframed *Taken from an original painting, circa 1885-1887, this particular image clearly has the date 1923, however in 1924 a further lithographic image was published by the Chalcographie du Louvre and printed by Jacques Villon in an edition of two hundred. A further black and white image was also printed as a proof and also limited to an edition of 200. This was produced in order to verify that the tonality of the work would be vibrant and crisp before finally producing a colour image. This later coloured edition is often signed by Villon in pencil and can retail for $12,500. *Provenance. Ex. collection Orlando Greenwood (1892-1989), born in Nelson Lancashire, Orlando Greenwood became a full time painter, designer and draughtsman af er working in his uncle's cotton mill from the age of 13. He studied at Goldsmith's College School of Art and was in army service during WWI. The artist's house was bombed in WWII and he moved to the North of England settling in Ulpha, Cumbria in 1967 and gave up painting around this time. The present vendor was a neighbour and acquaintance of Orlando Greenwood.

A set of four George III oval silver plates by Benjamin Smith of lobed outline with gadrooned borders and shell motifs at the cardinal points maker’s mark BS for Benjamin Smith London 1814 each 34.5cm long gross weight 139 oz The arms are for General Sir William Carr Beresford KB (1768-1854) following his elevation to the peerage in 1814 following the battle of Toulouse. Lord Beresford was one of Wellington’s most able and distinguished officers and during the Peninsular war whilst commanding a combined Spannish and Portuguese army as a Portuguese field marshal won a resounding victory over the French at the battle of Albuhera in 1811. His career also saw him becoming the govenor of Jersey and the governor of Madeira on behalf of the Portuguese crown

Tadeusz Was Spring mixed media Tadeusz Was (1912-2005) Spring signed mixed media 27 x 37cm.; 10.5 x 14.5in. * Tadeusz trained at the Polish Institute of Fine Art Krakow for five years before being conscripted into the Polish Army. Tadeusz taught art in Crewe for many years and set up a coalition of Artists known as Group Five who exhibited throughout the Northwest. A solo exhibition-'Lost in Crewe' was held at the Museum and Art Gallery Warrington in 1991 and a current exhibition is still running at the Portico Gallery Manchester until June 30th 2005.

Allen Tortice-rural landscape mixed media Allen Tortice 20th century Rural landscape signed mixed media 37 x 69.5cm.; 14.5 x 27.5in. * Allen Tortice was born to a mining family in what was at the time the heart of the industrial northeast near Wakefield. One of eight children he was educated at the local village school after which he had a number of jobs including like his father going down the mines and later a brief spell in the army. Gradually he developed his own style of painting allowing him vividly to express the atmosphere of the industrial landscape which is so familiar to him. The stark reality of his subject matter is contrasted by its nostalgic charm and the method of its portrayal. Allen has had a number of his one-man exhibitions around the country and his work has been featured on television.
