Although achieving local successes, the numerically superior Imperial Russian army crushed the insurgents, the country lost its autonomy and become an integral part of the Russian Empire in 1832

The Warsaw Uprising was a major operation by the Polish underground resistance to liberate Warsaw from German occupation, and timed to coincide with the retreat of German troops ahead of the Soviet advance. Unfortunately, as the Red Army approached the city, Joseph Stalin ordered a cessation of combat operations, enabling the German army to regroup, defeat Polish resistance and destroy the city in an operation that lasted 63 days

James Kerr, 3rd Regiment, Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers, listed at 176 West George Street, Glasgow, in the 1882-3 Post Office directory. The Volunteer Force was a citizen army of part-time rifle, artillery and engineer corps, created as a popular movement throughout the British Empire in 1859. Originally highly autonomous, the units of volunteers became increasingly integrated with the British army after the Childers Reforms in 1881, before forming part of the Territorial Force in 1908
