HEYWOOD WALTER SETON-KARR (BRITISH 1859 - 1938),LUXOR, EGYPTwatercolour on paper, signed and dated 5/2/190524cm x 36.5cmFramed and under glassNote: Heywood Walter Seton-Karr, was a British Explorer and collector of archaeological artefacts. A former captain of the Gordon Highlanders, one of the British Army's most celebrated regiments. After a university education at Oxford he served in the British Army in Egypt. He went on to travel widely in Africa and Asia and the large collection of artefacts that he amassed were distributed to museums throughout the world Along with his sketches, Seton-Karr kept a journal which he published in London in 1887, titled "Shores and Alps of Alaska." Seton-Karr was a working member of the Society for the Preservation of Art in 1900 and exhibited works at the Army Officers' Art Society in the 1930's. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and authored several books on travel and big game hunting.

A WW1 M15 Adrian French army helmet, black painted , comb finial attached to crown by four pins, six finger leather lining pulled together by string, R F (Republique Francaise) flaming bomb insignia to the front of helmet, along with a later dark olive green (khaki) coloured M15 Adrian helmet, probably Belgium, six finger leather liner to interior, insignia to front of helmet missing
Prussian Enlisted Mans Ersatz Felt Pickelhaube, good felt bodied Prussian pickelhaube, all the fittings match in the chemically treated field grey, original chinstrap in brown, state and national cockades complete, with its original leather liner which is slightly loose from the body with drawstring, no extra holes, Original owner’s name indelibly marked to the inside of the body with faint traces of army group markings which are not identified.
Rare Thuringen Infantry Other Ranks Pickelhaube with Original Trench Cover, a magnificent all leather pickelhaube to an enlisted man in Thuringen Infantry Regiment 153. Good leather skull, standard Prussian front plate with the Fuerst scroll, nickel overlay plate for Thuringen complete with its original state and national cockades. Original chinstrap in the hanging position as taken from the battlefield. No extra holes, dated ‘1915’ to the interior of the skull. Profusely stamped to the back peak ‘J.R.153 1915’ Roman numeral ‘IIB’ (2nd Battalion), army corps marked, original owner’s name marked. Original enlisted ranks field cover having ‘153’ in green numbers stitched to the front with original label of ‘Frei Volunteer Oscar Matthes, Infantry Regiment 153’ applied to the label. Featured on page 120 and 121 of Feldzug 14.
Saxon Infantry Other Ranks Pickelhaube with Original Pre-War Field Cover, leather skull, slight congealing to the front and back peaks, all brass fittings, nickel overlay Saxon plate, original chinstrap, Saxon state and national cockades, fitted with its complete original leather liner, indistinct corps and regimental markings to the back peak. Superb cover with red numerals ‘134’, profusely stamped to the inside of the cover 19th Army Corps clothing depot stampings, 124 Regiment marked, ‘1.K.’ (1st Company) marked size ‘59’. Blood splatter is evident in streaks across the top half of the front section of the cover. Shown in Feldzug 14 page 10.
Saxon Infantry Regimentally Marked Other Ranks Pickelhaube Helmet Cover, superb pre-war cover with painted pre-war red numbers ‘R104’ and with stampings to the interior for Regiment 139, Regiment 104, 2nd Battalion plus army group markings. manufacturer’s markings and size ‘58’. Featured on page 58 of Feldzug 14.
Very Rare Army Group Gaede Helmet, a semi ground dug example of the ultra rare army group Gaede helmet, these rare experimental helmets preceded the M.16 steel helmet. A small quantity of helmets in this condition were found in the Vosges Mountains of France some years ago. Mounted on a specifically produced head with a custom made replication of the inside lining of a Gaede helmet to the head for display purposes. Featured on page 72, 73, 74 and 75 of Feldzug 15.
WW1 German Soldiers Tornister (Backpack), a good example of the fur covered tornister, army group marked to the interior ‘B.A.VIII’ dated ‘1918’ with earlier army group stamp ‘1917’ plus signals unit company markings. In one of the compartments is a fully used cardboard ammunition packet. Good fur to the exterior, all leather fittings strong, Erfurt maker marked, straps dated ‘1916’ with ’17.JR’ markings.
WW1 German Bread Bag and Water Bottle Set, heavy duty canvas enlisted ranks bread bag, all leather fittings complete, metal buttons present. Profusely stamped Regiment 18 dated 1916 plus faint army group stampings. Complete with the blue enamel blue felt covered water bottle with its strong original leather cradle, cork top with original soldier’s name hand inscribed to the leather cradle.
