[MONTGOMERY B. L.]: (1887-1976) British Field Marshal of World War II. A very scarce artefact, a small selection of hair apparently belonging to B.L. Montgomery, neatly encased in a rose gold locket. Together with a comb used during Montgomery's last haircut. Both pieces, part of Hugh L. King's (1921-2006) collection, Hugh King being a hairdresser to several senior retired Army Officers including Field Marshal Montgomery. On the 10th September 1968 King was cutting Montgomery's hair when a young boy, awaiting his turn, asked if he could have some of the Field Marshals hair as a memento. This Montgomery readily agreed to. King also retained some of this hair, that now being contained within the locket. In March 1976, when gravely ill in bed, Montgomery asked for one final haircut. King obliged, with Montgomery passing away just a few days later. The comb being the one King used for that last haircut. Both pieces are matted with a portrait of Montgomery and a printed version of the story behind them. The comb has lost a few of its fine teeth to the edge, otherwise VG

MONTGOMERY B. L.: (1887-1976) British Field Marshal of World War II. Vintage, dark fountain pen ink signature ('B. L. Montgomery, Field Marshal') on an oblong 12mo card. Accompanied by a brief typed note, unsigned, one page, 8vo, Headquarters, 21 Army Group, 20th May 1945, to an unidentified correspondent, stating, in full, 'Field-Marshal Montgomery has much pleasure in sending you his autograph'. Together with an unrelated War Office envelope simply addressed in Montgomery's hand to 'Charles Kirkman'. Some light age wear, mainly to the envelope, and with very minor traces of a paperclip rust stain to the signed card. G to VG, 3

SOMERSET FITZROY (1788-1855) 1st Baron Raglan. British Field Marshal, Military Secretary to the Duke of Wellington. Ragan served as Commander of the British Forces during the Crimean War, giving the fateful order which led to the Charge of the Light Brigade (1854). A.L.S., Fitzroy Somerset, one page, 4to, Gallegos, Spain, 28th January 1812, to a Gentleman. Somerset informs his correspondent 'I enclose a letter (no longer present) for Col Torrens which I will thank you to deliver to Gordon if he should not have sailed when this reaches you. If he has pray send it by the earliest opportunity as it contains the… of our loss in the late operation against Ciudad Rodrigo.' With some light age wear. VG Henry Torrens (1779-1828) British Army Officer, Adjutant-General to the Forces. James Willoughby Gordon (1772-1851) British Army Officer, Quartermaster-General to the Forces. The Siege of Ciudad Rodrigo (7th-20thJanuary 1812), Wellington's Anglo-Portuguese Army besieged the city's French garrison under General of Brigade Jean Léonard Barrié. After two breaches were blasted in the walls by British heavy artillery, the fortress was successfully stormed on the evening of 19thJanuary 1812. Wellington's army suffered casualties of about 1,700 men the death of two Generals.

EVEREST EXPEDITION 1953: John Hunt (1910-1998) British Army Officer, Leader of the 1953 British Expedition to Mount Everest. A good vintage blue fountain pen ink signature ('John Hunt') on a white card, also adding the words 'Leader, British Everest Expedition, 1953' in his hand beneath his signature. Together with a second identical card individually signed in blue inks by John Hunt and Tenzing Norgay (1914-1986) Nepalese Sherpa Mountaineer, one of the first two individuals, alongside Edmund Hillary, to reach the summit of Mount Everest, 29th May 1953. Accompanied by a brief holograph note by a collector indicating that the signatures date from November 1957. VG to EX, 2

The crossing of the river Rhine was at Rees, Wesel, and south of the river Lippe by the British Second Army, under Lieutenant General Sir Miles C. Dempsey Operations Turnscrew, Widgeon, and Torchlight, and the United States Ninth Army Operation Flashpoint, under Lieutenant General William H. Simpson. The First Allied Airborne Army conducted Operation Varsity airborne landings on the east bank of the Rhine in support of Operation Plunder, consisting of U.S. XVIII Airborne Corps, the British 6th and the U.S. 17th Airborne Divisions.
