RAF Log Books to Pilot Officer Benson Railton Metcalf Freeman. RAF Log Books to a British RAF Officer who became a POW after being shot down over France in May 1940. He was later convicted of treason for becoming an Officer in the SS-Standarte “Kurt Eggers” propaganda unit in WW2 and he also worked alongside William Joyce “Lord Haw-Haw” on “Germany Calling”. Pilot Officer Benson Railton Metcalf Freeman AKA SS-Untersturmführer Benson Railton Metcalf Freeman. He also went by the alias P. Royston. A 121 page Mi5, Mi9 & Air Ministry (RAF Special Investigations Branch) file on him can be found in The National Archives  Benson Railton Metcalf Freeman, born on 6 October 1903, began his military career as an officer cadet at RMA Sandhurst in 1922. Commissioned in 1924 as second lieutenant in the King's Own Royal Regiment. Developing an interest in flying, in 1926 and now a lieutenant he transferred to the RAF. He was posted as a flying officer to No.16 (Army Co-operation) Squadron at Old Sarum, near Salisbury on 22/08/1927. He later transferred to 26 Squadron at Catterick on 21/02/1929. This matches his Log Book and other sources. In early 1931 he left the RAF to become a gentleman farmer in the quiet Gloucestershire village of Brockweir.  He was known to be ardently anti-communist and anti-Semitic. He joined the British Union of Fascists in 1937, and was a paid up member when war broke out in 1939 but, rather than risk being called up into the ranks, he rejoined the RAF and was posted to No. 24 (Communications) Squadron at Hendon as a transport pilot. There is a detailed report from his CO in the archive files. Freeman also goes into detail about his time here. On 22nd May 1940, Freeman flew with his squadron from Croydon to Merville in France. Whilst flying back to the U.K his aircraft was hit by A/A fire over St Omer and and crash-landed near near Arques, resulting in him being captured by German soldiers. Whilst the RAF were sorting though his personal effects following his failure to return from Operations, his BUF ID card was found, which raised concerns internally and a file was opened. On 20th June, the Air Ministry wrote to the Provost Marshal - the chief of the RAF Police. The letter - marked "Secret and Personal" - states: "Amongst his kit we found the attached membership card of the British Union (of Fascists). He was a member of the Maidstone Branch. A copy of this card is in the archive file. Freeman was initially taken to Stalag IIa in Neu-Brandenburg. He was then transferred to Dulag-Luft near Frankfurt. Freemans pro Nazi stance and BUF membership was well known to the Camp Commandant Major Theodor Rumpel with whom he often met with and referred to him as a personal and great friend, he was taken to Berlin where he met Dr Fritz Hesse where they discussed how he could be useful to the Nazi cause. Later he was recruited by the German Radio Corporation and took part in the 'Germany Calling' programme. The main presenter of this propaganda was William Joyce (Lord Haw-Haw). Freeman shared an office with another convicted British traitor, Norman Baillie-Stewart. Freemans job was to write scripts for Joyces program but also worked on one of his own. At the radio station Freeman, now using the name "P. Royston", presented a weekly programme called JAZZ Cracks, an odd mix of jazz and "wisecracks", which his former boss in Berlin described as being "anti-Jewish, and anti-Bolshevik, and criticisms of the British Government." Throughout this time he resided in Berlin and was paid a salary of 200 Marks per week. In September 1944, whilst at a social event in Berlin, he had a chance meeting with Gunter d’Alquen, chief editor of the weekly Das Schwarze Korps, the official newspaper of the Schutzstaffel, and commander of the SS-Standarte Kurt Eggers. Taking a liking to Freeman and having joint views on the likelihood of the German defeat in the East, d’Alquen offered him a commission in the “Kurt Eggers Regiment”. Freeman joined the Waffen-SS in October 1944, where he made a declaration that he was “an Englishman of Aryan descent and have never, neither now nor previously, been a member of a free masons lodge nor any other secret society.” He was not required to command troops, but to vet propaganda material. In April 1945, as his office was being evacuated from Berlin, he was given the opportunity to fly an aircraft to Switzerland, but refused to abandon his SS comrades. He was court-martialed at RAF Uxbridge in September 1945. He was charged under section 4(5) of the Air Force Act with voluntarily aiding the enemy whilst a prisoner-of-war and, under section 40, with accepting a salary from the enemy whilst a prisoner-of-war. He was found guilty on three out of four charges, including serving in the Waffen SS, working for the Germans and accepting money from them. Sentenced to 10 years of penal servitude and cashiered (lost his rank and dismissed from the RAF). This was an extremely lenient sentence for a traitor. Despite numerous appeals by his wife and friends to have his sentence commuted, it is believed that he served his full term in Leyhill Prison, Falfield, Gloucestershire. If he served his full sentence, he'd have been in his early 50s when he was released in 1955. But it is as if he just disappeared into thin air. His wife died in Ireland in the early 1970's.   https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C11016552

ARTIST: Don Balke (North Carolina, born 1933)NAME: Snow GooseYEAR: 1983MEDIUM: gouache on boardCONDITION: Excellent.SIGHT SIZE: 9 x 11 inches / 22 x 27 cmBOARD SIZE: 18 x 20 inches / 45 x 50 cmSIGNATURE: lower rightNOTE: This painting is the original painting which appeared on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the Waterbirds of the 50 States South Dakota/Snow Goose. Sitting on the water with its wing tips hidden, a Snow Goose may be confused with a swan. But the Snow Goose's neck is distinctly shorter. Both males and females of the Snow Goose are very handsome birds with glistening white plumage. These beautiful waterbirds wear a black "grinning patch," a broad band along the mandibles that seems to give the birds a leering expression. In Spring, these elegant birds fly north in V's and ragged, sweeping curves from the main wintering grounds in California. They are indeed a beautiful spectacle of gleaming white bodies and black-tipped wings as they fly. On their way to their breeding grounds -- the arctic shores of Alaska and Canada -- they will make a stopover in South Dakota. They announce their coming with a resonant, melodious honking. Since the Snow Geese are very pretty, they are welcome visitors to South Dakota. On their summer grounds, they nest in colonies in a depression filled with mosses and lined with grasses. The nesting season of Snow Geese takes about twenty-five days. As the female patiently incubates her eggs, the male will stand guard close by. By the time the young are capable of flying a long distance, the Snow Geese will form migratory flocks and head south to their winter home. When they migrate, they fly very high. Sometimes they utter shrill falsetto notes and occasional softened honks as they make their journey. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. His family was completely dependent on the land; they tapped trees to make maple syrup; used crosscut saws for logging and horses for their farmwork; they raised crops for themselves and as income. His upbringing instilled in him a love of nature and wildlife. He received his first art award in a Wisconsin state-sponsored art contest while at elementary school for a painting of a black bear roaming in the woods. After serving in the US Army, he married Barbara Schernick[citation needed] and they moved to Chicago where he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts, now known as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. During his time at the Academy, he specialized in still-life paintings. After graduating, he was hired by a Chicago illustrating studio and eventually moved back to Wisconsin where he worked as a commercial art director. He won many awards for his work as an art director and illustrator. On his own time, late in the night, he painted and developed his skills as a wildlife artist. After 17 years, he left his work as an art director to devote himself completely to watercolors and wildlife art. By 1979, they had six children and a home in the village of Thiensville, Wisconsin. Balke's love of nature took him to the NC mountains where he bought 200 acres in McDowell County and built a home. In 1985, a gallery was added and the Don Balke Wildlife Gallery was opened. In 1987, his work was chosen as the illustration for the official NC Zoo poster. In 1992, the United States Post Office issued a series of first-class postage stamps portraying five different species of hummingbirds designed by Balke. Balke travels to Africa, Australia, Ireland, the Caribbean, and across the 50 United States for inspiration and research. His wife, Barbara Schernick Balke, does extensive research on the animals and their habitats in preparation for the paintings and does much of the photography on research trips. He is best known for his detailed and realistic watercolor paintings portraying wildlife in their natural environment. In 2000, he transitioned to a more impressionistic style with oils portraying scenes from Yosemite National Park in California, Ocracoke Island on the Outer Banks, and Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina.

ARTIST: Don Balke (North Carolina, born 1933)NAME: Mountain GoatYEAR: 1987MEDIUM: gouache on boardCONDITION: Excellent.SIGHT SIZE: 10 x 11 inches / 25 x 27 cmBOARD SIZE: 19 x 20 inches / 48 x 50 cmSIGNATURE: lower leftNOTE: This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Wildlife of the 50 States 22c Mountain Goat/Washington stamp issued June 13, 1987. A breathtaking sight as they stand precariously at the edge of a precipice, Mountain Goats have a certain grace about them as they play king-of-the-hill among America's most remote peaks. Here, in the most remote retreats of the mountains, they scale incredible heights, jumping from precipice to precipice with sure-footed grace. Their rough-padded hooves, split into two spreadable toes, are perfectly suited to the rugged, precipitous mountain environment. Both nannies and billies sport beards and fleecy long shaggy outer coats that protect them from the wind. They are easily distinguished from their close relatives, the Big Horn Sheep, by long, thick, black horns which grow straight up, then curve back. Billies, who generally travel alone or in groups of two or three, become rivals at mating time, occasionally butting each other, but behaving gently, almost reverently, toward the female. By late spring the kids are born. The young Goats usually weigh about seven pounds at birth and within a half an hour can jump from rock to rock. During that time, they must learn about finding shelter and food in the hostile alpine environment. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. ARTIST: Don Balke (North Carolina, born 1933)NAME: Bird - Blue JayYEAR: 1986MEDIUM: gouache on boardCONDITION: ExcellentSIGHT SIZE: 11 x 11 inches / 27 x 27 cmBOARD SIZE: 19 x 20 inches / 48 x 50 cmSIGNATURE: lower rightNOTE: This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Wildlife of the 50 States 22c Blue Jay/North Carolina stamp issued June 13, 1987. One of the most commonly found birds of the eastern United States, the Blue Jay is distinguished from other woodland birds by its piercing jay-jay-jay. Known for mimicking the harsh cries of hawks, the Blue Jay nevertheless occasionally sings its own soft, low song and imitates the musical sounds of other songbirds. An inhabitant of forests, suburban gardens and parks, this friendly bird is often found in close proximity to humans. The Blue Jay's curious nature excites birdwatchers who enjoy observing its theatrical antics. A blue-winged bird with white on its wings and tail, the Blue Jay displays a prominent blue crest and black necklace. Black barrings appear on its wings and tail, while its breast and face are white. Though the Blue Jay is easily spotted by its vivid coloring, it is a master of camouflage, able to hide among tree branches even during winter months. An active, noisy bird, the Blue Jay often travels in small parties and enjoys eating nuts, seeds, fruits and insects. During migration, this boisterous bird travels in loose flocks of five to 50 and is a fall and winter visitor to Oregon and California. The Blue Jay's nest is usually located in the fork of a tree or on a branch, and is made of moss, twigs and leaves, which both the male and female gather as a team. The female lays three to six eggs which hatch within 16 to 18 days. Young birds leave the nest in about three weeks. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. ARTIST: Don Balke (North Carolina, born 1933)NAME: Birds - Sandhill CraneYEAR: 1985MEDIUM: gouache on paperCONDITION: Very good. Minor damages to corners.SIGHT SIZE: 12 x 12 inches / 30 x 30 cmBOARD SIZE: 19 x 21 inches / 48 x 53 cmSIGNATURE: lower leftNOTE: This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for Balke's Shorebirds of the 50 States, cancelled January 26, 1986. Belonging to one of the most ancient families of birds, the magnificent Sandhill Crane is a long-legged, long-necked member of the Crane family. Covered with gray plumage, the Sandhill can be distinguished by its brilliant red bald forehead. Using its six to seven foot wingspan to fly at speeds in excess of thirty miles per hour, the Sandhill elegantly glides through the skies as it migrates, usually in flocks of more than one hundred birds. Upon arriving at the nesting site, the Cranes joyously greet one another, bounding six to eight feet in the air, wings half-spread, stiff-legged and uttering a loud garooo-a-a-a call. After performing the equally intricate mating dance, the male Sandhill builds a four foot nest using marsh plants, weeds, and roots on the shallow waters of ponds or on the ground in large marshes or grasslands. Then, incubation of the two olive, spotted lavender eggs begins. Within a month, the brown-headed young Sandhills hatch, and can swim almost immediately, but are capable of flight only after several months. Later, deliberately separated from their parents, the young Sandhills fly with the flock to the wintering sites. During the winter, the Cranes roost together at night, standing in flocks on low damp land or in shallow water. Then, they fly from their roosting place at dawn to the feeding grounds. Sandhills are also known as garoos, upland cranes, or blue cranes.

On October 28, 1919, the Volstead Act was passed, providing enforcement of the recently ratified 18th Amendment, prohibiting the manufacture, sale or transportation of alcoholic beverages in the United States. President Herbert Hoover declared Prohibition to be "a great social and economic experiment, noble in motive and far-reaching in purpose." Most Americans, however, tended to disagree, especially those living in cities where illegal saloons or speakeasies flourished. Along with speakeasies came the men who supplied the illicit spirits, gangsters such as Frank Costello and Al Capone. Before long, the explosive growth of bootlegging and organized crime led to the broad corruption of public officials. Fewer than 1,600 liquor enforcement agents patrolled a nation inhabited by more than 105 million people, which possessed two lengthy borders and more than 18,000 miles of coastline. And since agents were paid miserable wages, few were dedicated to their work. Two notable exceptions were agents Izzy Einstein and Moe Smith -- famous for donning elaborate disguises to catch offenders. Calls for repeal of Prohibition began as early as 1923. It wasn't until February 20, 1933, however, that Congress passed the 21st Amendment, repealing the 18th Amendment and making liquor legal again. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." The poignant words of American poet Emma Lazarus' sublime poem, The New Colossus, inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, reflect America's attitude toward the millions of immigrants that landed on Ellis Island during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As the nation's largest port of entry, the island received nearly three-fourths of all immigrants during its 40 years of full operation. Ellis Island received as many as 5,000 people a day, with the peak year for immigration occurring in 1907 when 1.3 million immigrants arrived. Most of America's immigrants between 1905 and 1907 were Russian Jews, Italians and people from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Ellis Island's facilities included dormitories to accommodate 1,500 people, kitchens, a laundry, recreation rooms and a special ferry service to the mainland. Most immigrants remained at Ellis Island for a short time, while waiting for their papers to be approved and until their families' arrival on later ships. Some were detained in quarantine for health checks. The massive immigration during the early 20th century helped to establish America as a melting pot of many cultures, providing people from all over the world with a new beginning. After the Battle of Fredericksburg, when General Ambrose E. Burnside attacked Robert E. Lee on Virginia's Rappahannock River, Burnside was relieved of command at his own request. Replacing him as commander of the Army of the Potomac was General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker. On April 27, 1863, Hooker sent his force of 120,000 men against Lee's army of only 60,000 men, still holding the Rappahannock line. Hooker's plan was to engage Lee's attention at Fredericksburg, then send another force around the town to attack the Confederate flank. The two pincers would try to isolate and crush the Army of Northern Virginia. But Hooker's right wing force had to march through a thickly wooded area making it vulnerable to surprise attack. Alert to Hooker's strategy, Lee left a screening force to protect his right flank at Fredericksburg and attacked Hooker straight on, at the same time sending General Stonewall Jackson to strike at the Union right. Jackson's savage attack from the pine thickets on May 2, at the crossroads junction known as Chancellorsville, caught the Northern army by surprise. After battling for three days across a 10-mile area, Hooker retreated. Union casualties were over 17,000, while the Confederate cost was 12,800. For Lee, his greatest victory was sadly Pyrrhic, since Jackson was mortally wounded by his own men. Nevertheless, Lee decided to launch a second invasion of the North, hoping to capture an important city like Harrisburg or Baltimore and possibly effect a triumphant peace.PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Determined to defend slavery and states' rights as fundamental to its way of life against the threat of hostile legislation from a victorious Republican party, South Carolina seceded from the Union on December 20, 1860. Ten other southern states followed. Meeting in Montgomery, Alabama, in March of 1861, the newly seceded states declared their independence and drew up a Constitution. "Physically speaking," said President Lincoln in his Inaugural Address, "we cannot separate." South Carolina rejected this argument and, determined to repossess her own "territory," demanded the evacuation of federal forces on Sumter Island in Charleston Harbor. When Lincoln responded by sending an expedition to reinforce the Fort, General Beauregard, in command at Charleston, decided to rally southern support by precipitating war. At 4:30 on the morning of April 12, 1861, Confederate batteries fired the first guns of what was to be a four-year war. The Union commander, Major Anderson, responded as best he could, but in vain: the next morning the Fort was afire and Anderson lowered the flag. The next day the garrison marched out with colors flying and drums beating. Four years later to the day, General Anderson presided over the raising of Old Glory. "I thank God," he said, "that I have lived to see this day." And as he began to hoist the ragged and shell-torn flag, the wind caught it and shook its folds out above the Fort, and every soldier instinctively saluted.PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. It was the English who invented the first steam engine and the first steam railroad but it was an American, Robert Fulton, who, in 1807, formally launched the steamboat era. Fulton was not the inventor, however, of the steamboat: that distinction belongs to poor John Fitch, a Connecticut Yankee and a veteran of the Continental Army who, as early as 1787, built and launched a forty-five-foot steamboat. But, alas, nothing came of that brave experiment. Fitch could get no financing for his invention and in the end gave up in despair and fled to the wilds of Kentucky where he died. Ten years later, the New York lawyer and diplomat, Robert Livingston, anticipating the role that steamboats might play in a vast nation whose only effective transportation was by water, persuaded his young friend Robert Fulton, with whose artistic and inventive talents he was familiar, to try his hand at building a steamboat. Fulton boasted a natural talent for engineering. He eagerly embraced Livingston's proposal and by 1807 was ready to launch The Clermont, named after Livingston's hometown. On its maiden trip, the boat steamed up the Hudson to Albany and returned five days later, having averaged a speed of five miles an hour. Successful as it was, it brought no great wealth to either Livingston or Fulton, for in 1824, John Marshall's Court pronounced their monopoly unconstitutional as an infringement on congressional power to regulate "commerce concerning the several states."PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. When confronted with a mountain range, the visionaries who built America's railroads had three choices: go around it, over it or through it. Those were the options available to John F. Stevens, engineer for the Great Northern Railway, when he found the Cascade Range between him and his proposed route to Puget Sound. Stevens had already brought the Great Northern through the Rocky Mountains. That experience helped him recognize the virtues of the pass that would eventually bear his name. Stevens Pass was ideal in that it allowed for several different routes. In fact, over the years, the Great Northern has had three routes at the Pass, one over it and two through it. The first ran across the summit on a series of eight arduous and time-consuming switchbacks. Not long after the switchback line was completed, work began on the original Cascade Tunnel. Nine years later, on December 20, 1900, the tunnel was opened and the switchbacks were closed. Although the new route was a vast improvement, it was still beset with severe curves, miles of snow sheds and four-percent grades. So in 1925, the Great Northern began construction on another tunnel at a more favorable site. Opened on January 29, 1929, the second Cascade Tunnel runs 7.8 miles, making it the longest railroad tunnel in the United States. Great Northern's 2-8-0 freight engine No. 1106, featured on this artwork, was built in 1901 by the Rogers Locomotive Works. PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Shortly after the turn of the century, railroad promoter Arthur Stilwell began building the Kansas City, Mexico & Orient Railroad (KCM&O). Claiming that he had "designed a railroad 1,600 miles long which will bring the Pacific Ocean 400 miles nearer to Kansas City than any other present route," Stilwell set out to construct a rail system that would link the Midwest to the port city of Topolobampo, Mexico, which was intended as an entrepot for shipping American goods to the Orient. The line was built in five disconnected sections throughout the United States and Mexico. On April 1, 1903, 74 miles of track -- linking Milton, Kansas, to Carmen, Oklahoma -- became the first completed American segment of the line. Although construction of the KCM&O was fairly rapid at first, in 1910 the Mexican Revolution halted operations on the southern leg of the route. In fact, Francisco "Pancho" Villa -- one of the principal leaders of the revolution -- was one of Stilwell's contractors. By spring of 1912, the troubled KCM&O entered receivership and Stilwell's dream went unfulfilled. In 1928, the Santa Fe Railway acquired the American portion of the KCM&O, and the Mexican segment eventually came under government control. The line wasn't finally completed until 1961. Pictured here is the No. 208 -- one of 15 engines built by the Pittsburgh Locomotive works for the KCM&O between 1909 and 1911. This 2-8-0 engine became Santa Fe's No. 2542, and today is on display in Arkansas City, Kansas.PROVENANCE: Collection of James A. Craig Thorpe is a nationally recognized artist specializing in conceptual renderings and landscape paintings. Says Robert Eaton, Mayor of Leavenworth, WA, “Craig understands the history, needs, and mission of our community. Our investment in his talents has more than paid for itself. Craig's interest in art dates from his formative years in Pittsburgh, PA. The landscapes of the area, with its undulating topography, rivers, industrial plants and railroads captured his imagination. The imagery of those experiences shaped the foundation of a career.Thorpe studied at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University with a BFA in Industrial Design. Following a short stint in the US Army Transportation Corps, he worked for architects in Virginia. After graduate school in New England, where he earned a Master of Divinity from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Thorpe moved to Seattle, WA and served as a Presbyterian pastor. In 1985 he chose to leave parish work to begin free-lance architectural and transportation illustration. When Amtrak featured his painting of the new Olympia, WA station on its 1993 corporate calendar, Thorpe's rail art began to be recognized nationally. He continues to produce commissioned works for Amtrak including the commemorative centennial paintings of Washington D.C. Union Station (2008) and Glacier National Park (2010). His most recent work is a collection of vignettes celebrating Amtrak's 40th anniversary in 2011.Craig is widely known for these and commissions by other rail clients such as the White Pass & Yukon Route in Alaska. Original vintage Soviet propaganda poster - USA - Stronghold of reaction and aggression. - featuring an illustration of the Statue of Liberty with rockets guns and gallows, illustration of a soldier, dislocation of American soldiers, the text on the poster reads - American billionaires have opened a particularly tragic page in the bloody history of imperialism. Lenin. The USA is the largest country of capitalism. Territory - 9.4 million square meters, population - 202 million people. 2.9 million people live in the colonial possessions of the United States. The events of the last decade have revealed with even greater force the image of US imperialism as a world exploiter and gendarme, an implacable enemy of the liberation movements. The USA is a state of sharp social contrasts, monstrous property and political inequality, and racism. While 2% of the population owns half of the national wealth, 35 million people live in poverty and 11.5 million go hungry. 25 million blacks live in conditions of racial inequality and are persecuted. Despite the fact that imperialism as a world system is stronger, it remains a serious and dangerous adversary. The aggressiveness of the main imperialist power, the United States, has intensified. An army of 500,000 is waging a bandit war in Vietnam. Over the past 5 years, US military spending has amounted to almost $350 billion, i.e. 20% more than during all the years of the Second World War. In today's world, the efforts of imperialist states, primarily the United States, have created an ominous web of regional military blocs and alliances that are hotbeds of tension and hotbeds of military conflicts. 429 large and almost 3,000 small bases and strongholds have been set up by the Pentagon on foreign territories. About 1.5 million US troops are stationed in over 100 states. The United States and its partners in military blocs in the post-war period organized and provoked more than 200 military conflicts and local wars aimed at suppressing the revolutionary and national liberation movement. Soviet soldiers must be especially vigilant against the intrigues of imperialism, constantly maintain high combat readiness in order to crush any aggressor. Good condition, tears, creasing, small paper loss on image. Country of issue: Russia, designer: S. Sokolov, size (cm): 62x44, year of printing: 1969.
