EXTREMELY POIGNANT AND FASCINATING ARCHIVE RELATING TO LIEUT. WILLIAM JOHN SHORTER, THE ESSEX REGT. AND R.F.C., including a group of portrait study photographs of Shorter in Army uniform and others with R.F.C. insignia, two Imperial Service badges, album of photographs depicting training at Burnham, figure studies, studies of bi-planes and others, Essex Regt. badge, Army Marksman badges, also, and probably most importantly a series of hand written letters from Lieut. William John Shorter sent back to his family, chiefly his mother and father dated from 9th February 1917 - 23rd March 1918. The letters describe his attachment to the Royal Flying Corps. - his initial training - aerial gunnery practice off Turnberry - learning to fly - the types of aircraft he flew and related incidents - life in France and in the Mess. In addition, there is three Telegrams informing the family of his death and letters from his Flight Officer and C.O. to his mother explaining the nature of the accident that took his heroic young life at only 20 years of age. The final letter is dated 23rd March 1918 which is the day he died. All the letters are signed 'Earlie'. Extracts from some of the letters are illustrated on our website. Robin Hood (2010 Ridley Scott) - starring Russell Crowe original production used prop teardrop shield. This shield was used in various scenes throughout the movie, mainly by those loyal to England and King Richard’s reign, also by French forces masquerading as members of the English Army. The shield is painted a deep red, with three horizontal yellow lions painted on and has been covered in a lacquer which protected the shield and has made it particularly glossy. The shield is made from dense foam with a straight top, which has been covered in canvas. There is a leather arm strap on the back which is held in place by rivets that can be seen from the front as small round dents. A well made production prop. Measures approx; 137cm tall. With certificate.

FORCES FOOTBALL 1946 Scarce programme, Allied Forces European Association Football Championship, Final played 3/11/46 in Berlin, Great Britain Combined Services (Germany) v Czech Army . The eight page programme shows that GB beat Norway6-0 and Denmark 5-0 to reach the Semi-Final where they defeated Netherlands 8-0. The score for the Final is noted as 6-3 to GB. The British team was Cowan, Powell, Martin, Mills, Rickaby, Gavin, Parsons, Bailey (probably Eddie Baily), Thompson, Steel and Lee. Slight folds. Generally good

MILITARIA - A PERSONAL ARCHIVE RELATING TO SERGEANT CHARLES WILTSHIRE comprising portrait photographs; a photocopy of his flying log book, 1944-45; later correspondence with former flight crew members; and other items. Note: Charles Victory Wiltshire joined the army in 1940 and was posted first to Egypt, then to Heraklion, Crete, from which he escaped following the German airborne invasion in 1941. He returned to Egypt where he contracted malaria, was sent back to England and retrained as a flight engineer. In 1944 he joined 431 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, based at R.A.F. Croft, near Darlington, County Durham. Initially flying Halifax bombers he was then allocated to a Lancaster bomber, 'F' KB812, serving with George 'Mac' McNeill, pilot officer; Lorne 'Larry' Gardiner, navigator; Keith 'Ding' Bell, wireless operator; Guy 'Bull' Colthurst, bomb aimer; Frank 'Bram' Bramley, mid upper gunner; and Cliff 'Cod' Sollows, rear gunner. His flying log notes his participation in raids on u-boat pens at Bergen, Norway; on railway marshalling yards across Germany; the I.G. Farben chemical plant at Ludwigshaven; Dusseldorf aerodrome; steel works at Nuremburg; a rubber plant at Hanover; the city of Dresden (13th Feb. 1945, 'great devastation'); the Bomm & Voss submarine pens, Hamburg ('Me262s attacked rear of gaggle and got 4 Lancs. Corkscrewed four times and evaded fighters. Mustang cover weak'); and elsewhere - a total of 53:04 day-time and 141:05 night-time operational hours.

A Brass Bell 'U.B. 44', mounted in a mahogany frame, the bell 16 cm high, together with a small quantity of correspondence regarding Royal Army Ordnance Corps-related correspondence, mostly pertaining to Central Ordnance Depot Donnington Footnote: By family repute this bell was taken from a German submarine during the First World War. Even assuming that this bell is a naval example, the UB-44 disappeared without trace in 1916 which renders this account implausible.

A German Third Reich Army Dagger, the 25cm double edge steel blade etched ORIGINAL, maker's squirrel logo / Eickhorn, Solingen, the silver plated hilt with engraved inscription Dr. Lohse to the crossguard, lacking the swastika, with wrythen moulded orange plastic grip, silver plated scabbard and velvet backed silver lace hanging straps. Tip of blade is chipped. The swastika of the crossguard has been removed. The orange plastic grip has a fine vertical crack to one side. The plated finish is tarnished. There is wear to the hanging straps and some corrosion to the buckles.
A German Third Reich Army Officer's Dagger, 25cm double edge steel blade with maker's mark for Alcoso, the silver plated hilt with wrythen fluted orange plastic grip, the silver plated scabbard with pebbled finish and leather backed silver lace suspension straps, 40cm. Black patching to blade surface. Minor dents to the pommel. The crossguard has areas where the plating is cracked and lifting. The scabbard has a few small dents towards the tip and the plating is worn. The suspender straps are frayed and the clips and buckles are corroded.

He applied for a Permanent Regular Commission in 1914 and later applied for a permanent position with the Indian Army. He was selected for appointment as a probationer in the Indian Army (1/55 Coke's Rifles) and embarked on a troopship bound for India on 20th March 1918. He later reverted to the British service at his own request and was posted to the 2nd Battalion, Liverpool Regiment 6th August 1919.

(Indian Army Reserve Officers), Supply & Transport, demobilised at Mhow 10.12.1919; appointed Overman at the Loyabad Coke Manufacturing Co.Ltd., India 1920; joined East India Railways 1925; became Assistant Yard Master 1935; granted Emergency commission as 2nd Lt. Indian Engineers, Indian Army 1943; appointed as Adjutant, 37 Operating Group, E.I.Ry.D OF I. Corps (Railways)1943; released from Army Service 1946 with rank of Captain. Also awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. Retired to the Isle of Wight.
