AN ANTELOPE (IBEX POSSIBLY) HORN & PART-SILVER TOASTING FORK GIFTED BY GEORGE WASHINGTON & WITH CONNECTIONS TO THE AMERICAN WAR OF REVOLUTION, the silver pommel inscribed 'A Present from the New Country from G.W 1776' with the Washington family crest to the centre, it is 61cms long. Provenance: The vendor is James Edward Vans of Barnbarroch, the fifth great-grandson of Captain Fenner Palmer (b.Sept 15, 1735, d. March 24, 1794). Captain Palmer was an officer of the Continental Army during the War of the Revolution (1775-1783). He is listed in the 'Historical Register of Officers of the Continental Army during the war as Captain of the New York Militia in 1775. General George Washington was commander-in-chief of the army throughout the war. The vendor can trace the fork to his great-aunt Olivia, the sister of his grandmother, Marian (nee Fell), who was the granddaughter of Charles Hazard Palmer (b.October 5, 1812 d. Feb 2, 1884) a New York judge and Colonel in command of the 108th New York Infantry for the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862 - the first major battle of the American Civil War.
