Military – Gordon of Khartoum Historical piece of History: Small piece of wood measuring approx. 10 x 4cm with brass plate affixed stating `This wood was taken by Sir henry Rawlinson from the door of Gordon`s Palace at Khartoum 4th September 1898` A remarkable association piece. Gordon had been killed in January 1885. On September 2nd 1898 a well equipped British Force under Kitchener destroyed the forces of Abdulla al-Taasgu, the self proclaimed successor to Gordon`s killer Mahdi Muhammad Ahmad at the Battle of Omderman. Rawlinson was a Captain at that time and served on Kitchener`s personal staff. He later rose to be Field Marshal and was given the responsibility, after Kitchener`s untimely death in 1916, of commanding the 4th Army in WW1. This little sliver of wood therefore represents a remarkable association between two of the most important figures in British Military History

Charles II Volume of printed parliamentary papers 1680 which demonstrate the turmoil which was ensuing in the later years of the reign of Charles II. Included is an ‘Address of the Commons in Parliament to his Majesty to Remove Sir George Jeffreys out of all Publick Offices and Votes of the House of Commons ‘that whosoever advised His Majestey to prorogue this Parliament to any other purpose than in order to the passing of a Bill for the exclusion of James Duke of York is a betrayer of the King the Protestant Religion and of the Kingdom of England a promoter of the French interest and a pensioner to France...’ In the same document it makes the incredible claim that ‘This is the opinion of this House that the City of London was burnt in the year 1666 by the Papists designing thereby to introduce Arbitrary Power and Popery into this Kingdom...’ Jeffreys was one of the most notorious Judges in English History. This attempt to have him removed from office alleged that he deliberately prevented an attempt to bring ‘Popish Conspirators to Speedy Justice’. Jeffreys survived the attempt went on to become Lord Chief Justice and earned himself the notoriety as the ‘Hanging Judge’ for his draconian treatment of the rebels in Monmouth’s West Country army in 1685 at the Bloody Assizes. The measure against James was to prevent him from succeeding his brother because he was a declared Catholic. This volume sets out the huge divisions in the land between Protestants and Catholics – who were being blamed for everything that was going wrong in society – even the Great Fire of London !

WWI – Bruce Bairnsfather (attrib) original cartoon entitled ‘Poor old Fritz’ showing a dishevelled and wounded German soldier smoking and looking wistfully at a German army cap in his hand. This cartoon was published with the title ‘Alas ! Poor Herr von Yorick – Fricourt July 1916.’ The attribution and title places this sketch firmly within the first few days of the Battle of the Somme – and suggests the popular belief that the ‘Great Push’ of the allied forces against the German positions would be an overwhelming success. Without fighting a battle the fort of Attock was taken by Maharaja in exchange of handsome Jagir through his minister Fakir Aziz-ud-din who negotiated with Jahandad Khan. As Attock fort was considered to be the gateway of India Wazir Fateh Khan was furious when he came to know that it had passed into the hands of the Maharaja.
