Lot 87

Medal Ribbons and Badges of Major General John Blackburne Smith CB., CIE. Indian Medical Service Comprising: an attractive table top glazed frame by Spink of London mounted with the uniform medal ribbons CB., CIE., 1914/15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, MID Oak Leaf, 1911 Coronation Medal. These complimented with Major General rank insignia, tunic buttons etc. Accompanied by a number of original photographs including a portrait photograph in General Officer Medical Service uniform. (see lot 97 belt and 470 his sword; 179 plume etc)his Major General John Blackburne Smith CB., CIE. was born in 1865 in Ireland and after qualifying as a Doctor joined the Army and in 1889 was serving as a Surgeon Lieutenant at the Royal Victoria Hospital Netley. He received promotion and at the outbreak of the Great War held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Wartime service would see him in Egypt and in 1915/16 at the Bombay Presidency General Hospital. Remaining in India he was appointed a CB 1918 and CIE in 1922. Promoted to the rank of Major General 1922 he held the post of President Medical Board India Office 1923 until his death on the 2nd November 1928

British Army Infantry Pattern WW1 Period George V Sword by Wilkinson. A good regulation example. The blade with etched decoration of a Crowned GVR cypher and cutler's details of Henry Wilkinson of London, the back of the blade with the number 48829 (1914/17). The hilt with shagreen grip retaining twist wire binding. Housed in polished brown leather field service scabbard. Clean condition.

HART RE", Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal (VIC) "Q/MRS SGT E.J. HART RE" (Engraved naming). Medals loose original ribbons. Superintendent Clark Ernest James Hart a draughtsman by trade, enlisted in 1881. He served in South Africa from 1896 to 1902 and later in Egypt 1906 to 1907, discharged in 1907. Clasp entitlement is confirmed.

Gen. Charles de Gaulle's interpreter for Sir Winston Churchill  during WWII, WWI & WWII Knighthood group of twelve British and French medals to Sir Douglas Lloyd Savory MP (17 August 1878 – 5 October 1969), later a British MP for Ireland. Includes his British War Medal and later EIIR Coronation medal. During WWI he served in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve attached to Room 40 in his role as part of the Naval Cryptanalysis department (famous for cracking the German naval codes during WWI and decoding the Zimmerman report). Later during WWII, he became special investigator into the Katyn massacre of Polish officers in 1940, and later worked as interpreter between General de Gaulle and Sir Winston Churchill, and arranged for de Gaulle to address members of Parliament. For his work with the French he was awarded Officier d'Academia with miniature (1923), Officier de l'Instruction Publique (1926), Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur (1928), and Officier de la Legion d'honneur (1959). He was knighted in 1952. There is a brooch in the shape of the family chrest included made by Cahoon Bros, Castle Place, Belfast in original box. He was also president of the Huguenot Society of London, and his Jewel for the society is included together with an American associate Jewel, also with a Lay Readers Association Diocese of Down & Connor & Dromore neck order. Included are his collection of Free French and Free Polish Army WWII Pin Badges with silver, gilt and enamel variants (13 in total) and military compass. A rare group with great provenance.

Ethiopian 1930s era Army Officer's Sword of Emperor Haile Selassie, the curved steel blade etched with floral detail and inscriptions in Aramaic, and nickel silver single bar guard heavily marked with THE LION OF JUDAH bearing a flag over it's shoulder on one side. The other side bears the initials N.H. & FILS. Some wear to the blade and the handle.

British WWI Salvation Army Charity fundraising pin badge 'A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed' printed on the obverse, printed on the reverse 'In the War Zone - Sympathy, Comfort, Security.' This pin supported the Salvation Army's Ambulance service supporting the Red Cross and Soldiers rest quarters on near the front throughout WWI. Printed on card and mounted on the pin in the design of a flag and has excellent graphics.
