A COLLECTION OF THREE PRINTS FROM THE MAITLAND FAMILY COLLECTION to include:  After Sir Charles Eastlake “NAPOLEON ON BOARD BELLEROPHON: A PAINTING EXECUTED BY SIR CHARLES EASTLAKE FROM SKETCHES DONE IN 1815 WHEN BELLEROPHON VISITED PLYMOUTH”, photographic print, 15.5cm by 10cm (Eastlake was rowed out to Bellerophon to make sketches, from which he later painted the original portrait) together with  G P Palmer after G M Brighty THE SURRENDER OF BUONAPARTE ON BOARD THE BELLEROPHON, engraving, published by T Kinnersley June 1 1816, 25cm x 17.5cm and After Sir W L Orchardson R.A THE SURRENDER OF NAPOLEON TO GREAT BRITAIN, photographic reproduction print, 48cm x 64cm, all framed and glazed (3) Provenance: Maitland family  Notes: Sir William Quiller Orchardson, RA (1832 to 1910) was the quintessential Victorian painter of story or “literary” subjects.  Often, the story told was taken from history.  He made his name with “The Challenge,” an imagined scene from the English Civil War in which a Cavalier presented a written challenge, on the end of his sword, to a Puritan.  His care for historical detail, ability to convey a story and sentiment appealed to his age.   Here, Orchardson paid attention to the uniforms and based the figures of Napoleon’s suite on contemporary portraits.  The scene matches quite closely one told by a midshipman aboard the Bellerophon, George Home.  He described helping Napoleon onto the Bellerophon’s poop and the late Emperor watching for hours as the ship sailed away from Cape Ushant – the last of France. The large (1651 x 2489 mm) painting from which this was taken was exhibited in 1880 and presented to the Tate collection by the trustees of the Chantry Bequest.  It was widely reproduced.  In the late Victorian years Britain’s Royal Navy was known as the “silent service.”  The Army had depots spread around the country and recruited widely.  The Navy recruited mostly from ports and the nature of its service was distant.

Lot 18

Two orders signed by Napoleon, as General in Chief of the Army of Italy. Comprising of a single sheet, mounted on a card backing board, written by Napoleon’s private secretary. Both were written at the headquarters of the General-en-chief of the Army of Italy at the Villa Crivelli, Mombello, Italy. Written on July 8th 1797 (20 messidor year 5), the first order, Napoleon dictates his decision regarding the design and cost of the uniforms for the couriers of the Army of Italy. This is signed ‘Nap’ directly below. The second order authorises the reimbursement of expenses incurred by Martin-Roch-Xavier Estève, who was Napoleon’s Paymaster General (Payeur Central) and later Treasurer General under the First Empire. Estève had incurred expenses while following Napoleon in Austria, and subsequent return to Milan after the signing of the Preliminaries of Peace between the Emperor of Austria and the French Republic. The second order is signed ‘Bonaparte’. Approximate document size 17.8cm x 12.3cm, and 23.2cm x 15.3cm including the backing board. Condition: generally good. Some darkening / smudging to the paper in places, plus a little age related foxing, but the written text is still clear.

Lot 7

A 19th CENTURY NORTHERN PERSIAN TRIBAL WOOL KHORJIN (SADDLEBAG) each bag face worked with three rows of three peacocks/dragons within arrow head borders, mainly in rust and deep brown colours, 118cm by 52cm Provenance: Rear-Admiral Sir Frederick Lewis Maitland KCB (1777-1839) and thence by descent In peace and in war, naval officers spent a surprising amount of time ashore.  For much of Captain Maitland’s career the main French fleets were largely confined to harbour.  This was the achievement of blockade – a product of the establishment of naval superiority.  Once established, one of the fruits of this was that the Royal Navy could push “pinprick” attacks on the French and their allies, compelling France to disperse forces in defence that the Emperor might have preferred to have available for more active service.   Even in periods of general peace the Navy still engaged in many small interventions ashore, often in support of the Army.   Maitland’s last service was as commander-in-chief of the East Indies and China Station, to which he was appointed in 1837, flying his flag from the Wellesley, with his kinsman Thomas Maitland as her captain.  Like his Bellerophon, the Wellesley was a 74-gun ship-of-the-line, though of a more recent build. In March 1839 the Shah of Persia’s opposition to the establishment of a permanent base on Kharg Island led to attacks on the British residency in Bushire to which the Wellesley was sent.   Admiral Sir Frederick Lewis Maitland died aboard her, off Bombay, later that year.

Binding.- Genealogy.- Vitignano (Cornelio) Vera genealogia e discendenza della serenissima et invittissima prosapia d'Austria, first edition, collation: A-E4, title with woodcut arms recto and verso, woodcut head- and tail-pieces, decorative initials and printer's device to final verso, sig. D lightly browned, some spotting or light staining, handsome 17th century red morocco richly gilt, with the arms of Cardinal Vidone, covers with central arms within various foliage, sawtooth or filet borders, spine in four compartments, each with a central star, the uppermost compartment with a later ink number 8, lacking ties, spine ends and corners skilfully restored, little spotting, 4to (binding 214 x 154; text block 208 x 136mm.), Naples, Giovanni Giacomo Carlino for Enrico Bacco, 1599.  *** Handsome binding for Cardinal Vidone on a work tracing the genealogy of the House of Austria. Vidone having studied at Pavia and Perugia arrived in Rome during the pontificate of Pope Clement VIII (1592-1605). His rise through the church hierarchy was rapid, eventually earning the important post of Treasurer General of the Apostolic Chamber, and Commissary General of the papal army in 1625, thereby effectively running the entire administration of papal domains. He was made a cardinal on 30th August, 1627. His short period as a cardinal allows us to date this binding quite precisely to between 1627 and the year of his death in 1632.

A chrome cased Russian military wristwatch, the dial set with luminous Arabic numerals and subsidiary seconds dial, the centre of the dial depicting a photograph of Marshal Zhukov in the company of Joseph Stalin, diameter excluding winding crown 44m.Provenance: With newspaper cutting stating the following: "The Story of the mystery watch, found in a Parisian antiques fleamarket the World War II artefact provides more questions and answers. The Russian mechanical wristwatch was manufactured by J M Kupona CCCP movement numbered 477984. It has a large robust chrome metal case with protective glass, luminous hands and numerals which all characterise this watch. The black enamel dial has a picture of Stalin and Zhukov saluting a military parade in Red Square. The manufacturer's name and address also appear on the dial. The inside of the backplate of the watch is inscribed 'Marshal Gyorgy Zhukov although his name is generally reported as Georgy. Why do these two great Russian Generals appear on the same watch? The watch was purchased more than twenty years ago by Wythenshawe Resident Author Broadcaster and Historian David Turner. It is alleged that this watch was presented to Marshal Zhukov by Joseph Stalin in recognition of Marshal Zhukov's success fully defending Stalingrad against the German onslaught and capturing Berlin in World War II ahead of the Allied Forces so we have two Russian Army Generals depicted on this watch who were also seconded to several senior posts within the government. David told Your Local Voice that despite interest from Imperial War Museum he is keen to offer the watch back to Russia adding that 'BBC Television in Manchester have said they will cooperate with Russian television to produce a programme covering the presentation of the watch to a suitable Russian military museum as part of their military history for posterity'."
