Near VGC.The announcement of the Distinguished Flying Cross appeared in the London Gazette on the 25th May 1945. The official recommendation states' P/O Bull has now completed his third tour of operations. He has participated six times in attacks on Cologne, six times on Bremen, five times against Kiel, and in many other raids on targets deep in Germany, including the capital itself. In his third tour he has also operated in support of the Army. He has flown with his squadron as a mid-under gunner, and his work has always been of the highest order, both in the air and on the ground. By his courage and coolness and his great experience of operational flying he has been an invaluable addition to the Squadron personnel and has greatly helped in the training of less experienced gunners. He is strongly recommended for the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross.' Dated 24th January 1945. The Station Commander of RAF Mildenhall wrote: 'Strongly recommended. The record of devotion to duty and sustained operational operational endeavour of this Officer is exceptional. The splendid example he has set has been outstanding.'The announcement of the Distinguished Flying Medal appeared in the London Gazette on the 29th December 1942. The recommendation states. '16th October 1942. Flight Sergeant Bull is an Air Gunner of No.218(Gold Coast) Squadron who, between February 1941 and August 1942, completed 56 operational sorties with a total of 317 operational hours. His record is one of sustained courage and distinction. In April 1941, he was in the front turret of a Wellington aircraft which attacked the aerodrome of Marane, south of Bordeaux. The aircraft made a diving attack on two hangars which were already on fire. Flight Sergeant Bull sprayed the bullets from his two Brownings around the hangars and put out a searchlight. Three attacks were made, the last one at 500 feet, and Flight Sergeant Bull pumped several hundred rounds into four dispersed aircraft. In May 1941, Flight Sergeant Bull's aircraft was attacked off Cuxhaven by a Me109. He directed his Captain to turn so that the enemy machine was silhouetted against the Northern Lights. He then gave the German machine a short burst of fire and it disappeared rapidly. In July 1942, after bombing Bremen, Flight Sergeant Bull's aircraft was attacked near the Zuider Zee, first by a Me.110 and soon afterwards by two other unidentified aircraft, at least one of which was claimed to have been shot down, On 16th July 1942, on the way out of Lubeck, three Me109's attacked his Stirling in daylight over the Danish coast. After three sharp bursts from Flight Sergeant Bull, one of the enemy aircraft broke away emitting a long trail of dark blue smoke. The British machine went on and bombed its target. Throughout his stay with this squadron, Flight Sergeant Bull has distinguished himself by his eagerness and his very complete subservience of personal interest to duty. He is very strongly recommended for the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal. Pilot Officer Bernard Cunningham's operational career started with 218 Squadron on the evening of the 24th February 1941 with ops to Breast, a trip of 5 hours 35 minutes. Through out his operation Tour he flew regularly until his 34th op on the 23rd July 1942, when he was screened. The squadron now operating the Short Sterling Bomber. He appears to have started his second tour again with 218 Squadron on the 6th May 1942 and would go on to complete a second tour of 22 trips when he was once again screened and posted to a training establishment. He was posted to 15 Squadron operating the Avro Lancaster Bomber in October 1944 and flew the 1st trip of his third tour on the 19th October 1944 to Stuttgart. During this time the squadron was incredibly busy and in the period from the 19th October to 30th November he flew 16 trips. This completed his operational flying of WW2 his 72 Operational flight covering 396 hours in the air. He was born in March 1917 and died in 1971, at that time living at Sutton Surrey. Part information supplied by the vendor.

Captain William Wallace Hozier joined the 2nd Royal British Dragoons as a Cornet on the 5th April 1844 and became a Lieutenant in 1846. He was appointed Adjutant of the Lanark Yeomanry in 1853 and was then confirmed as a Lieutenant of the Regiment 1855 and Captain 1857. He retired in 1867. Accompanied by a superb set of gold bullion cap lines.Major-General W.H. Greenly was commissioned in the 12th Lancers on 20 February 1895 and served as Adjutant of the regiment during the South African War and for his services was awarded the DSO.Remaining with the Army after the war he spent from 1906 until 1912 in various staff positions, principally with the cavalry in Aldershot Command and in January 1912 he was given command of the 19th Hussars. At the outbreak of the Great War the 19th Hussars were split up as divisional cavalry and on the 19th September 1914 he was appointed GSO1 2nd (Cavalry) Division, recently formed under the command of Hubert Gough.  He remained in this post until April 1915, when he was promoted GOC 9th (Cavalry) Brigade, 1st (Cavalry) Division and from November 1915 until November 1916 he served as Chief of staff for the XIII Corps, commanded by Sir Walter Congreve. This Corps was heavily engaged on the Somme and achieved the greatest success on 1 July, including the capture of Montauban. In November 1916 he was appointed GOC 2nd (Cavalry) Division. In March 1918 he was given command of the 14th Light Division, which would soon feel the full force of the German Spring Offensive. Major-General Greenly handled this difficult situation with energy, ability and calm.  He was confronted with a difficult problem, and succeeded in concentrating and withdrawing the 14th Division from a situation which at one time looked critical. However the strain of his new command appears to have rested heavy upon him and he was consequently relieved of command, suffering 'exhaustion from exposure'. Haig recorded more brutally in his diary that 'Greenly "¦ went off his head with the strain'. After a period of rest he was once again recommended for command, but with the war nearly over he was appointed Chief of the Military Mission to Romania. He resigned his commission in 1920. It is interesting to note that the tin has a paper label for the Hereford Military Exhibition, Shire Hall Hereford, this being his county of his birth.
