Keary (C.F.). Twixt Dog and Wolf..., 1st edition, R. Brimley Johnson, 1901, half-title, advertisement leaf at rear, untrimmed, a few leaves carelessly opened and with consequent slight loss to blank margins (and short tear at head of title-page), free endpapers browned, original blue cloth, gilt-titled spine lightly faded and a little rubbed to extremities, 8vo A collection of short stories by novelist and historian Charles Francis Keary (1848-1917) which is, it has been said, possibly the rarest volume of collected tales in the weird macabre genre. The book is known to have influenced James Joyce's collection of short stories 'Dubliners', published in 1914, apparently evidenced in a letter from Joyce dated 24th September 1905 ('Letters of James Joyce', volume 2, p.111). Keary's work is not listed in Locke's 'A Spectrum of Fantasy', and we have been unable to trace any record of another copy sold; there appears to be no other edition ever published. A quotation on the title-page sets the scene: 'A dog is howling at the court-yard door;/Within, the horses drag their halter-chains;/Behold! the world is full of misty rains;/And the old shepherd knows the twilight frore./Night with her army would the vale engulf,/Her cloudy pickets clambering to the height;/And now from a near pinewood into sight/Steals one grey wolf'.
