A booklet titled 'A Copy of Lieutenant General Cromwell's Letter, Read in the House of Commons and Other Letters of a Great and Bloody Fight Neere (sic) Preston. The Scots Army Totally Defeated by Lieutenant General Cromwell with the Particulars of the Fight, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday Last', the eight-sided printed booklet originally dated 1648, but this could be a later printed copy in old text, with battle statistics of the Scots Army defeat by Cromwell that took place on August 17th, 18th and 19th 1648, with partial remnants of a red wax seal to the back.Provenance: This was found by the vendor in the eaves of an old building by the River Ribble Bridge in Preston. CONDITION REPORT Recently, someone has added sticky tape to the edge to unite front and back covers.

Loudon Sainthill (Australian, 1919-1969)The Musician pen and ink, watercolour and gouache77 x 57cmA work from the same series of 'The Musicians' and dated 1958 is in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia.Provenance: Bequeathed to the current owner by Alfred Hecht.Loudon Sainthill (Australian, 1919-1969)Artist, costume and set designer, Loudon Sainthill lived a life designing for stars of the ballet, opera, theatre and film. He was born in Tasmania, but moved to Melbourne where he met his lifelong partner, Harry Karl Tatlock Miller (1913-1989). His love of theatre design began in Australia, where he designed for touring ballets. His paintings of the dancers garnered attention and, in 1939, he was invited to London to exhibit at the Redfern Gallery. This success was followed by exhibitions in Australia. During the Second World War, Sainthill served with the Australian Army. He was discharged in 1946 and briefly lived with Miller in Merioola, which was also the home of a group of artists including Alec Murray, Jocelyn Rickards and Donald Friend. Returning to London in 1949, Sainthill’s career took off; he designed for the ballet 'Ile des Sirenes' starring Margot Fonteyn (1950) and then 'The Tempest' at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre (1951). One of his most celebrated projects was for the set and costume designs of 'Le Coq d’Or' at the Royal Opera House, Sainthill being given this commission after Marc Chagall suddenly withdrew from the project. Sainthill later won a Tony for his work on 'The Canterbury Tales' (1967). During his lifetime, he worked on more than fifty productions, and published multiple books of his designs and paintings with his partner, Miller, enabling his innovative and vibrant designs to live on to inspire future generations. Condition report: Unexamined out of glazed frame. The paper is cockled due to gouache on the paper rather than caused by a condition issue. There is a very small brown mark on the man’s hat (his left side) – this is shown in a photograph. Overall, the paper is a very light brown in colour, consistent with its age. This is clear if you look at the hand (see image). There is a light line to the right hand caused by time staining where an older mount may have been removed (see image). There is some damage to the frame (see image).However, in our opinion, the condition comments noted above do not affect the appeal of the work.

A collection of three silver-mounted glass decanters, comprising: an Edwardian one of shaped tapering form, ribbed decoration, by The Army and Navy Cooperative Society, London 1906, another by the same maker, London 1903, and one of fluted hour-glass form, marks rubbed, the plain mount with four pouring spouts. A pair of George III silver regimental tablespoons, The York Rangers of Upper Canada, by Richard Crossley, London 1804, Old English pattern, the terminal with the regimental markings of the York Rangers and engraved 'Follow The Sun' and 'York Rangers', length 22.3cm, approx. weight 4.5oz. (2) Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. The York Rangers Militia of Upper Canada was raised in 1803, by Lieutenant Colonel Charles Stephenson of the 1st Battalion the 5th (or Northumberland) Regiment of Foot. This was mainly for garrison duties. They were named after Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, Commander-in-Chief of the Army. The town of York in Upper Canada became Toronto in 1834.
A presentation silver regimental salver, The King's Royal Rifle Corps, by The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company, London 1915, circular form, gadroon border, the centre with the regimental badge and with five facsimile signatures, on four claw and ball feet, diameter 25.3cm, approx. weight 19.9oz. Provenance: a Private Collection of Regimental Silver. The signatures are of five young officers, who were attached to the King's Royal Rifles in 1915/16 on a course of instruction, and on leaving, presented this salver to the Officers Mess. The signatures are Hal Verelst, (Coldstream Guards), killed in action September 1916 at the Battle of Lesboeufs. Arthur F. Smith, (Coldstream Guards) went on to be Chief of Staff, Army headquarters, India. Charles Loyd, (Coldstream Guards), Chief of Staff to Lord Alanbrooke and ADC General to King George VI. H.A. Sutherland (Black Watch) went on to be Deputy Lieutenant of Peeblesshire, and John Noel, (King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry) taken prisoner and held at Stalag IV-DTorgau Prisoner of War Campnear Leipzig.
