A GROUP OF WWII MEDALS AND EPHEMERA RELATING TO 832650 SAPPER RONALD AUTHERS RE who was captured by the Japanese and as a POW worked on the Thailand to Burma Railway eventually being sent to Fukuoka Camp and comprising group of 5 medals - 1939-45 and Pacific Stars with Burma clasp, DM, WM and Elizabeth II LSGC Regular Army (LSGC named) mounted, matching miniature group, War office correspondence relating to his liberation from the Japanese, Standard "Welcome Home" letters from Buckingham Palace and Borough of Tiverton, a white cotton cloth from the POW camp in bag, documents relating to the Railway and Japanese surrender, a wooden Royal Engineers wall plaque and an associated pair of WWII medals and ATS wooden wall plaque for his wife.
1854 Battle of Inkermann and Sergeant Thomas: an unusual English porcelain mug printed in colours with a battle scene entitled ‘Sergeant Thomas defending the colours at Inkermann’ gilt lining, 105mm high * Sergeant Davies was initially credited with this heroic act but it subsequently transpired that he was not involved in the fighting. He returned to Britain two days after the battle. See Victoria Remembered plate 208 and catalogue for the 2005 Exhibition ‘A most Desperate Undertaking, National Army Museum’ a photocopy of which accompanies the lot.* Sergeant Thomas was subsequently credited as being the hero of this act following the discovery of inaccuracies in Sergeant Davies’ account (see footnote to the previous lot) Even the version of Sergeant Thomas is somewhat dubious. A highly important group of Medals and Orders to Rear Admiral George Napier Tomlin (1875-1947), comprising CMG, MVO East and West Africa Medal Benin River 1894, Gambia 1894 (G.N. TOMLIN. MID RN HMS RALEIGH), 1914-15 Trio MID CAPTAIN RN, Delhi Burbar Medal 1911, Chilean Order “AL MERITO” 2nd Class; Order of Leopold II (Grand Officer), Order of the Gown of Italy (Grand Officer (neck badge and breast star), Order of the Nile 2nd Class (neck badge and breast star), together with companion group of miniatures mounted as worn, his naval sword and naval dirk and a copy photograph. Captain George Napier Tomlin HMS Liverpool Commanding Allied Squadron in support of the White Army during the Russian Civil War. Known to have been in Touapse and Novorossisk during November 1918 (see lot 179)
Defective Medals, a Crimean impressed to “.....S. HERTON 89th......” without suspender, the rim mounted with eye hooks and links: an Egypt Medal 1882 to “23014 GNR J. WALTERS 1st/4th LON DIV RA”, no clasp/ suspender and with solder deposits to the reverse; a very large silver coloured metal medallion celebrating Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, “young” and “old” heads, a 2 shilling coin of the Boer Republic 18.. now defaced with brooch and mounts, Army Temeperance Association, a silver memorial medal for Queen Victoria (Birmingham 1912). A Russian presentation Shasqua, hallmarked 1910-1917, 80cm double fullered curved blade, traditional shasqua form hilt decorated with scrolling foliage and filigree in an embossed silver niello finish, the pommel applied with the Royal Cypher of Tsar Alexander II, contained in its pig skin covered wood scabbard with four silver niello mounts decorated ensuite. Some wear to the pigskin. Presented to Captain George Napier Tomlin HMS Liverpool Commanding Allied Squadron in support of the White Army during the Russian Civil War. Known to have been in Touapse and Novorossisk during November 1918, and sold with a carved wood presentation plaque commemorating 1914-1918 war from the people of Touapse 27 November 1918 (see lot 5).
