Curved blade shows some rusting to 8cm near hilt, therefore not allowing scabbard to entirely close and has a dusky grey appearance, measuring 86cm long x 3cm wide, the ricasso marked with maker’s name W. CLAUBERG SOLINGEN and a scrolled G. Also stamped with a crown above FW above 61 above (what looks like) P on the reverse edge of the blade near the hilt. No other marks to the blade are seen. Wilhelm Clauberg was a sword maker and steel manufacturer in the Gasstrasse in Solingen, Prussia. His firm supplied edged weapons to most of the civilized world throughout the 19th century. The firm’s origins date back to around 1810. The numbers of swords Clauberg supplied to the American Union Army, during the Civil War in the 1860s, is incalculable. Surviving specimens would seem to indicate that Clauberg was likely the most prolific supplier to the United States from Solingen.

Paul Maze (1887-1979) French Tree study Signed, pen and ink, 34.5cm by 50cm Provenance: The artist's familyPaul Maze (1887-1979), often referred to as ‘The Last of the Post-Impressionists’, had the extraordinary ability to capture the essence of a place with deceptive simplicity. He painted with immediacy, and his skills were once described by his lifelong friend Winston Churchill as “with the fewest of strokes, he can create an impression at once true and beautiful”.Maze was born in Le Havre, Normandy, the son of a successful tea merchant and art collector. From an early age he was surrounded by art, and was fortunate to count Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, and Dufy as family friends. Indeed, it was Pissarro who would teach him the rudiments of art before he was sent to school in Southampton at the age of 12 to perfect his English. Here he fell in love with all things English. At the outbreak of the First World War, Maze was turned away from the French Army having been deemed unfit for service. However, seeing soldiers from the Royal Scots Guards disembarking at Le Havre, he offered his services as an interpreter. Despite not having and official position, which led to his near execution at the hands of a British firing squad after he was wrongly accused of being a spy, he went onto become a highly decorated soldier who sketched his experiences when opportunity allowed. It was during his time in the trenches that he met Winston Churchill, the pair bonding over their mutual love of painting. Maze would become Churchill’s artistic mentor, and in return Churchill introduced him into British aristocratic circles and was instrumental in obtaining commissions for Maze at military events and his appointment as official artist for the funeral of King George VI and the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.Maze would spend much of his life living in England, however, after the First World War he lived in Paris and became an integral member of the art scene. He counted amongst his friends Derain, Bonnard and Vuillard, and the latter had encouraged Maze to concentrate on working with pastels, which best suited his style. Maze turned his hand to a variety of subject matter, from marines to cityscapes, and the gentle landscapes of the English and French countryside. However, he had a particular love of painting the pomp and circumstance of British army parades and the social whirl of the English season, and he could be frequently found at Cowes, Henley and Goodwood. Having married his second wife, Jessie, Maze moved to the South Downs in 1950, where he would remain for the rest of his life. He fell in love with the softly rolling hills, which he frequently depicted. He died at the age of 92, at home looking over the Downs, with a pastel in his hand.
Rare V8 Petrol modelRare Civilian VersionOriginally based on the military M998 Humvee, the Hummer H1 was offered for the first time in 1992 by AM General as a civilian off-road vehicle. The Humvee was the U.S Armed Forces military vehicle of choice and was used in combat areas such as Operation Desert Storm during the Gulf War. Legend has it that 'The Terminator' himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, made enquiries about buying one, and it was this interest that thrust AM General into considering making a road-legal version of the vehicle. The Hummer H1 was offered in three variants, the convertible soft top, a four-door hardtop, and an Alpha Wagon bodied model. Similar to its military predecessor in look, the Hummer H1 offered creature comforts beyond the dreams of most army personnel. Initially, five different engines and three automatic transmissions were offered. The Hummer H1 had incredible off-road capabilities including the ability to ford 76cm of water, climb a 56cm step and have a standard ground clearance of 41cm. Another notable feature on the vehicle is the Central Tyre Inflation System (CTIS) which allows the drivers to increase or decrease tyre pressure at the touch of a button, depending on the type of terrain being covered.First registered in the USA in April 1997, the imposing and rare Hummer H1 on offer here was exported to Germany in 2008 before finding its way to the UK in May of 2022. Presented in black, with black soft top hood and interior, the H1 Civilian was supplied with creature comforts the Army wouldn’t have gotten the benefit of. Air conditioning, electric windows, central locking and CD stereo were all fitted from new. The interior seats fold down making the interior as versatile as the exterior. Sitting on a set of 20 inch alloy wheels shod with aggressive off road tyres, this H1 is supplied with the rare and desirable 5.7 litre petrol V8, this monster of a vehicle makes an incredible noise and is reported by the vendor to run and drive very well. Only now for sale to free up some much needed space, you are sure to draw a crowd wherever you go in it.Supplied with its V5 registration document and MoT test certificate valid until October 2025. Whether you’re impressing friends or defending freedom, the H1 Civilian has you covered. Consigned by Will Penrose Rare Civilian modelRare V8 Petrol engine (most diesel)Channel your inner Arnie!
Restored in KenyaRepatriated to the UK by a member of the armed forcesSupplied with a Heritage CertificateThe Land Rover Series IIA, produced between 1961 and 1971, remains an icon of off-road capability and rugged design. The Series IIA is often considered the quintessential Land Rover due to its robust construction, timeless aesthetic and global utility. The Series IIA retained much of the Series II's design, with its flat aluminium body panels and distinctive ‘barrel side’ waistline. It was offered in both short-wheelbase (88 inch) and long-wheelbase (109 inch) variants, catering to different utility needs. Its front grille, typically a wire mesh or pressed steel design, added to its utilitarian charm. Under the bonnet, the Series IIA was powered by a range of engines, including the 2.25 litre petrol engine, a favourite for its reliability, and a 2.25 litre diesel, renowned for efficiency. These engines paired with a four-speed manual gearbox and a selectable four-wheel-drive system made the IIA a formidable off-road machine, capable of tackling the toughest terrains worldwide. It was whilst the Series IIA was in production that sales of utility Land Rovers reached their peak, in 1969-70, when sales of over 60,000 Land Rovers a year were recorded. The Land Rover dominated many world markets - in Australia, for example, the Land Rover held 90% of the 4×4 market in the 1960’s. This figure was repeated in many countries such as Africa and the Middle East.Manufactured on 8th January 1969 and despatched on 13th January, this right hand drive Land Rover was destined to Leyland Albion the designated dealer in Kenya. It remained in Kenya for over 50 years and was purchased by Major Jim Yates whilst he was stationed in Kenya for the British Army. The vehicle was restored in Kenya with invoices to confirm the work carried out. The car was then de-registered in Kenya and repatriated to the UK. Upon arriving in the UK, the car was then registered with the DVLA and a V5 registration document issued. Additional work has been carried out in the UK for which invoices are available. Presenting well in light green with a green interior, this Land Rover has not been over-restored and maintains its character. Today, the Series IIA is a beloved classic, cherished by collectors and enthusiasts. Its rugged simplicity and charm make it a symbol of adventure and utility. For many, the Series IIA embodies the golden age of Land Rover.
