A pair of reproduction fired unglazed clay near life-size models of warriors from the ancient Chinese terracotta army of Emperor Qin Shi Huangcirca late 20th century both clad in armoured tunics, their hair arranged in stylised topknots and holding associated painted wood halberd polearms and standing on square shallow plinth bases, the figures 151cm and 152cm high approximately, the halberd polearms 168cm high approximately (2)Footnotes:The original clay warrior figures were discovered in China approximately forty years ago by farmers digging a water way. Over a thousand terracotta warriors and horses have been uncovered since then and at least six thousand more figures are still thought to remain buried. According to the historical records, Sima Qian Qin Shi Huang ordered the army to be built in 221 BC, long before he became the first Emperor of all China. Work began when he was King of Qin in 247 BC to protect him in the afterlife. Each warrior was made of clay with none of the figures the same and with the most important commanders measuring over two metres high given their elevated rank orders. In addition, over seven hundred thousand workers were also needed to build the underground city where the Emperor and his army were buried in 210 BC. Although there are no current plans to uncover the Emperors palace and the city, it is nevertheless thought to be intricately decorated and filled with great riches. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
