Bar to MC (Immediate Award) On the 5/11/1942 Lieut Gregson was commanding a troop of Armoured cars on patrol. He was ordered to advance North West along the telephone wires from AQQAQIR, and to locate any enemy dispositions. When he stopped, one man got behind the gun and fired at the car, wounding the driver. The Armoured car silenced the A/Tk gun, killing three of its crew. At this moment, the third car of the troop reported that 100 yards away, an 88mm gun was being unhooked from a half-tracked vehicle. Lieut Gregson ordered his second car to come up to him so that he could change places with his Troop Sergeant, thus enabling his damaged car to get away safely. He then went to within 100 yards of the 88mm gun, and engaged it with the 2 pdr and Besa. The enemy were still bringing the gun into action, but were engaged by the MG from the Armoured car, and three of them were killed, whilst the remainder ran away. -1 A Chinese famille rose 'medallion' bowl, Daoguang or later -1 A Chinese famille rose 'medallion' bowl, Daoguang or later, the exterior enamelled with four roundels enclosing the love-story scenes of Niulang (the Cowherd) and Zhinu (the Girl Weaver) within gilt borders, all reserved on a densely-engraved pale blue ground brightly enamelled with cloud scrolls, the interior with an underglaze-blue scene of the reunion of the couple surrounded by flying magpies, Daoguang seal mark, with wooden box and cover, the bowl 15.1cm diam. -1 Provenance: An English private collection, acquired, by repute, form the father of the present owner who was stationed in Shanghai in the 1930s with the British Army. The present bowl celebrates the Qixi Festival, also known as Magpie Festival, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. Chinese tradition tells the story of a young cowherd known as Niulang who falls in love with a beautiful girl called Zhinü, the seventh daughter of the Goddess, whose task was to weave colourful clouds. The Goddess was furious at their attachment and scratched a wide river in the sky with her hairpin to separate the two lovers forever, thus forming the Milky Way. However once a year all the magpies in the world fly up into heaven to form a bridge so that the lovers may be together for a single night. -1 A similar bowl is illustrated in Gunhild Avitabile, From the Dragon's Treasure , p.43, No. 40 and The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelains with Cloisonné Enamel Decoration and Famille Rose Decoration , Hong Kong, 1999, no.215 -2道光或更晚 粉彩锦地开光牛郎织女纹碗 -1
