An interesting collection of Victorian through to WW2 items of Militaria, all relating to two families. To include: 2 scarce 19th century army pay books with leather covers. One named to Richard Mordecai, who enlisted with the Royal Artillery on October 17th 1894, aged 16 years and 2 months. The other is named to a Thomas Mordecai, who enlisted with the Royal Artillery on March 6th 1863 aged 19 years and 2 months (this is father and son). You can faintly see Thomas’ name inked on to the leather cover.Included with the first paybook is also a WW1 period photograph of Richard Mordecai, he is dressed in civilian clothes, but appears to be at an army camp.Online records show that there was a Richard Mordecai who enlisted on July 17th 1918 aged 40 years 11 months, in the Army Pay Corps, so this may explain this photograph.Plus, a WW1 BWM and Victory medal named to 1277 GNR J R Soulsby Royal Artillery (this is confirmed as his full entitlement). It’s likely that GNR Soulsby also served during WW2 on the home front, as there is also a Defence Medal and 2 sterling ARP lapel badges. There is also a 2nd type (1949-1952) George VI Special Constabulary Long Service Medal, named to James C. Saddleton, 2 x 1902 base metal Edward VII coronation medals, a bronze 1935 jubilee medal for the Borough of Tynemouth, an Edward VIII base metal coronation medal, and a Robert Raikes Sunday school medal.14 items total.Condition: varies across items. The leather covered pay books are worn to the used pages, and the paper has become brittle in place and broken away. There is still enough information available in each to discern who they belonged to.The medals are all good, as are the badges.
An exceptionally rare, and possibly unique WW1 / Interwar / WW2 medal group awarded to Captain, later Major W.J.C. Phillips of the Supply & Transport Corp, and 3/5th Mahratta Light Infantry.Comprising of the BWM and Victory Medal (both unnamed as were issued in India, the General Service Medal (with rank as Captain) with the very rare Southern Desert Iraq clasp, and the South Persia Clasp.Plus, the 1939-45 star, Africa Star, Burma Star, 1939-45 War Medal with bronze oak leaf for being mentioned in dispatches, the 1939-45 India Service Medal, and the 1937 Coronation Medal (with rank as Major).Notes: the Southern Desert Iraq clasp was generally only awarded to personnel serving in the R.A.F, and these themselves are very rare.Awards to British officers serving in non R.A.F units are almost unheard of, with only one other example known having been offered for sale (the group awarded to Major Charles Lyons Mervyn Voules of the Mahratta Light Infantry). The Lyons GSM did not also have the S.Persia clasp that the Phillips example does. The full sized group is swing mounted for wear, and is accompanied by the corresponding court mounted miniature medal group. The medal group is accompanied by multiple pages of copied research papers, including his WW1 era medal index card that confirms the award of his GSM with the rare clasp combination, plus copy photographs of Major Phillips in his uniform.William Joseph Christopher Phillips was born on December 7th 1896.He was originally commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the 3rd Royal Dublin Fusiliers on April 30th 1915.He attained the rank of Lieutenant in January 1917, and was later posted to the Indian army in June 1917.A promotion to Temporary Captain followed in December 1918, and later Captain in 1920.His oak leaf for being mentioned in dispatches was gazetted in April 1945 for gallant and distinguished service - at this time he was a temporary Lt-Col in the 2nd Punjab Regiment.Condition: very good all round.Usual age related toning to the medals plus a small amount of fading to the ribbons.

Lewis’The hip flask’s silver cup should be removable, but is stuck in place on the glass (likely due to liquid drying out inside and creating an adhesive). The screw on lid works as it should and is in good condition. The silver cup has small dent/crease near the corner.

A scarce and unusual Victoria Cross / Masonic related inter war / WW2 period swagger stick with integrated compass to the pommel. The shaft would appear to be made from Bakelite and has a brass ferrule and pommel, the latter having a hinged lid, which when opened it reveals a small compass. The inside of the lid is engraved with a Masonic symbol, and the top of the lid has the makers mark of Lawrence & Mayo. The circumference of the pommel is engraved G.T.Lyall V.C which relates to Graham Thomas Lyall, who was a British born Canadian officer serving in the 102nd battalion.Lyall won his Victoria Cross in late September 1918, with the citation appearing in the London Gazette in December 1918.It reads as follows:On September 27th, 1918, when the leading company was halted near Boulon Wood by an enemy strong point Lt. G. T. Lyall executed a flank movement with his platoon and captured it together with prisoners and its guns. Later that day his much weakened platoon was held up by machine guns at the southern end of the wood. Lt. Lyall led forward his few remaining men, then rushed the position single-handed, killing the officer in charge, and took it with its machine guns, capturing numerous prisoners. Advancing, he secured his final objective and still more prisoners. On October 1st, near Blecourt, by skilful disposition of the weak company he then commanded, he overcame another strongly held position, seizing numerous guns and many prisoners. In these two days Lt. Lyall captured 3 officers, 182 other ranks, 26 machine guns and 1 field gun, and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy. He showed throughout most conspicuous bravery, high powers of command, and skilful leadership.Lyall also served during WW2 in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps where he attained the rank of Lt Col.Given the award date of his V.C it would date from the post WW1 era, but as no rank is given on the engraved pommel it’s impossible to say exactly when in dates from.He died from a heart attack in 1941 while on active service in Egypt.Approximately 69.7cm length.Condition: generally very good. Some light service wear to the shaft and brass mounts. The compass would seem to operate as it should.

This would explain the cloth badge mounted in the cigarette box, plus the publish book included in the lot.Pte Belfitt’s full medal entitlement is unknown, as are the full details of his service record.Condition: the Helios watch has wear to the plated finish, revealing the brassy base metal. There is also some often seen pitting to the metal. The cigarette box is in good order, with only normal age related and service wear. The book and other ephemera have lots of wear to some pieces, but appear to be intact. Note- movement and functionality untested please request a condition report with specific questions for further info on this lot or alternatively view the watch in person

They then got the gun into action and fired it until relieved by a fresh detachment. He set a splendid example of his coolness and determination on this and many other occasions’.According to the Army Roll of Honour 1939-1945, 1409054 Sergeant George Rowley DCM died on February 20th 1943 while serving in the United Kingdom as part of the Intelligence Corps aged 51.His birth place is listed as Wolverhampton, but he was residing in Bristol at the time of his death and is also buried in Bristol. His name also appears on the CWGC website where it also indicates that he was the recipient of another gallantry award, the Military Medal. We’ve not been able to confirm the details of this award, nor when it was awarded.Given his WW2 service, it’s likely that he received at least one medal for war service, but his exact entitlement for this era is unknown.6 items.Condition: all of the medal are minus their ribbons. There is some wear to each of the medals from polishing, which has resulted in loss of detail. There are also contact marks from wear (it’s believed they were originally mounted on a bar).

Hutchinson Para.Regt’.His miniature medal group is also mounted for wear, but additionally the Territorial Efficiency Medal has 2 additional clasps for longer service (these are absent from the full size version). The 1st S.A.S. Regt card certificate certifies that L/Cpl Hutchinson served in the 1st Special Air Service Regiment from 05.06.42 to 16.11.45, during the following campaigns - Western Desert Italy. It also details his campaign stars awarded. This is dated 16.11.45 and is signed, albeit faintly by Lieut-Col Paddy Mayne. The cloth insignia includes a WW2 era set of embroidered wings, a post WW2 set of wings, a post WW2 1st S.A.S. Shoulder title, 2 bullion embroidered badges (the cap badge is possibly WW2 era), and a white screen printed badge, likely from a ski outfit, given its colour. The photograph album contained ‘snapshot’ images of Gerald and fellow servicemen within the regiment.Notably, these include images seemingly taken in North Africa, plus on ski manoeuvres in the Cedars of Lebanon circa 1943.The photograph of Paddy Mayne on the first page we believe is an already published image. The album is a fascinating archive of images relating to the S.A.S from the WW2 era through to the mid 1950’s.The majority of which will be so far unpublished so far as we can ascertain. There are a few loose photographs, one of which show L/Cpl Hutchinson smoking a pipe, and given the type of side cap he is wearing, this will date from circa 1942.According to information supplied by the vendor, Gerald moved to Canada after his service with the armed forces, where he took a job as a miner. He later worked for the DHSS up until his retirement. This is an incredible and rare archive charting the service of one man in one of the world’s most famous regiments. Please note: due to quantity of photographs and items within this archive, not all items are shown in the images.Condition: generally very good throughout.Normal light service wear to the medal groups and the cloth insignia. The photograph album and loose photographs show a little wear and tear, but are mostly in good condition. The paper ephemera shows normal wear, but the details contained on them remains legible. The remaining scrapbooks, publications and other items are mostly good, with just light wear and tear.

This appointment brought him into close connection with the Sikhs, and, as he spent the next eight years of his life in political employments in this part of India, he was able to obtain that thorough knowledge of their manners and customs which makes his History of the Sikhs one of the most valuable books ever published in connection with Indian history. In 1838 he was present at the interview between Lord Auckland and Runjeet Singh, the great Sikh chieftain; in 1839 he accompanied Colonel Wade when he forced the Khyber Pass, and he was promoted first lieutenant on 20 May in that year; in 1840 he was placed in charge of Ludhiana, under G. Russell Clerk, Colonel Wade's successor, and as political officer accompanied Brigadier-general Shelton and his army through the Sikh territory to Peshawur on his way to Cabul, and then accompanied Colonel Wheeler and Dost Muhammad, the deposed ameer of Afghanistan, back to British territory; in 1841 he was sent on a special mission to the principality of Jammu; in 1842 he was present at the interview between Lord Ellenborough and Dost Muhammad and the Sikhs… He spent four years on [the History], and on its publication in 1849 it was received with the greatest favor by the English press, a verdict which posterity has ratified, for it is universally recognized as the one authority upon the subject. But though this history made his name as an historian, it brought him into deep disgrace with his superiors. In his last chapter he treated of the history of the first Sikh war, and in it he made use of the knowledge he had obtained while acting as political agent with the army in the field, and distinctly asserted that two of the Sikh generals, Lal Singh and Tej Singh, were bought. Both Lord Hardinge and Colonel Henry Lawrence, who had acted as political agent after the death of Major Broadfoot, asserted that there had been no private negotiations with any of the Sikh leaders; but the confidential position which Cunningham had held, and still more his disgrace which followed, are strong arguments that such negotiations did pass'. Moercheson's survey', framed and glazedQTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: Private Collection, Gloucestershire, UK.Almora, the capital of Kumaon, sits on a saddle-ridge of the Himalayas, 5494 feet above sea level. The town was captured by the Gurkhas in 1790, who constructed a fort on the eastern extremity of the ridge. Almora was the scene of a British victory which terminated the war with Nepal in April 1815, and which resulted in the evacuation of Kumaon by the Gurkhas and the annexation of the province by the British. The British Library holds a number of watercolour views by Hyder Hearsey of the lower reaches of the Himalayas, including two which are captioned Almorah No.1 and Almorah No.5, as in the present work. Two similar views of Almora, also on the same scale, were offered at Christie's, London, Exploration and Travel with Visions of India, 21 September 2000, lot 283.Hyder Young Hearsey was the son of Captain Harry Hearsey, an English officer in the Maratha service who fell at the head of his cavalry regiment in the battle of Merta, in 1790. Hyder was educated in England, and at an early age followed in his father's footsteps, being appointed a cadet in the Maratha service before his seventeenth birthday, and receiving promotion a few months later to the rank of ensign, for good service in the field. He was kindly treated by General Perron, the French commander-in-chief of the Maratha army, but, like other Englishmen in that service, soon found his position uncomfortable, and entered the army of the celebrated George Thomas, Raja of Hansi. With the outbreak of the Nepal War in 1814, Lord Moira, Governor General, decided to attack Kumaon as a diversion from a number of unsuccessful advances towards Kathmandu. Hearsey was in command of a small body of irregulars and advanced in February 1815 from Pilibhit up the Kali into the hills, capturing Champavat in March 1815. Underestimating the fighting power of the Gurkhas, he was wounded, captured and imprisoned at Almora until its surrender at the end of April 1815. Hearsey accompanied two expeditions, through the hill country and in to Tibet, to discover the source of the Ganges. The first was in 1808 with Lieutenant Webb and Captain Raper. During the second, in 1812, he and William Moorcroft became the first Europeans to reach the sacred lake of Manasarowar.
