Rare and important D.F.C. Gallantry group, comprising Distinguished Flying Cross, 1914 - 1915 Star, named to 2. Lieut. A. P. Maurice A.S.C., together with War and Victory medals, named to Capt. A. P. Maurice. R.A.F. and miniature medal group (both mounted on bars). Alongside the medals is a copy of his commission at the rank of Flight Lieutenant, dated 10th August 1919, his Distinguished Flying Cross Citation, hand-signed by Major General Ironside, photographs of him and his planes and newspaper cuttings following his death. Alfred Price Maurice began his military career serving at the rank of Captain in the Army Service Corps (A.S.C.). In 1916, he transferred into the recently formed Royal Flying Corps (R.F.C.), serving throughout the rest of the First World War. Later in 1919, he served with the Allied Forces at Archangel, deep in Northern Russia, commanding an R.A.F. unit based at Obozerskaya from May 5th 1919 in a fight against Bolshevik Forces and it was whilst serving here that Captain Maurice was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C.) in recognition of his 'Gallant Conduct in the Field', stating that in commanding his unit he has shown 'Initiative and Readiness' to adapt himself to the unusual and often unfavourable conditions, constantly carrying reconnaissance over enemy lines under dangerous and arduous conditions and conducted bomb raids from low level in spite of strong opposition by enemy anti-aircraft guns and machine guns. By his fine example, he has kept up a very high standard of morale in his command. After his successes in Russia, he was granted permanent commission in August 1919 at the rank of Flight Lieutenant and on 1st January 1925, he was promoted to the rank Squadron Leader, serving until his retirement in April 1937. Shortly afterwards in May 1939 he was awarded the honorary rank of Wing Commander and a few months later after the outbreak of the Second World War, he came out of retirement, commanding the 27 Air School in Bloemfontein, South Africa throughout the War, until he was demobbed in early 1946. After the Second World War, the then Group Captain Maurice saw out his retirement in Colchester, Essex, spending his spare time sailing, being both a member of the Royal Harwich and West Mersea Yacht Clubs, until he died suddenly in 1960. An important and historically interesting medal group
