Good Working Order and Condition, retaining hints of original finish, (minor damage to one grip). This item is accompanied by a letter from Antique American Firearms of Barrington, Illinois, stating that the serial number of this revolver falls within the range of numbers issued to the 6th U.S. Cavalry in the Civil War and that therefore it is highly probable that it was issued to a soldier in that regiment. Gds), Army LS & GC Vic issue (engraved 1209 C Sgt J Morris Rif Bde), Khedive’s star 1882. F to VF (Egypt NF with contact pitting from star) and mounted court style; miniature group of 4, as above without MSM. With a folder containing Colour Sgts embroidered arm badge, various Certificates for Service, discharge, character, etc, testimonial, photos of recipient in uniform etc, the paper documentsworn, with splits along creases etc, some torn, service books and photos AF. Plate 2 Note: James Morris joined the Coldstream Guards 5th September 1878 rising to Colour Sergeant by 1885; he transferred to Rifle Brigade 30th April 1891 for duty with the 16th Middx R V C, posted as C. Sergt, appointed Act Sgt Major 1897, recommended for MSM 1905 (awarded 12th April 1932). In 1906 he became a Yeoman of the Guard, and in that capacity was present at the Funeral of Ed VII and Coronation of Geo V. He was with the Cheshire Regiment and discharged as ‘no longer fit for War Service’ 1916 receiving a War Badge. An undated newspaper cutting records that he attended the Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph with the six other survivors from the Battle of Tel El Kebir. He died in June 1932.

A Victorian Parian ware bust of Sir Colin Campbell, c.1858, by J Ridgway, Bates & Co. after the sculpture by J Dunham, 35cm high Field Marshal Colin Campbell, 1st Baron Clyde, GCB, KSI (1792-1863), was a British Army Officer who led the Highland Brigade in the Crimea and was in command of the 'Thin Red Line' at the Battle of Balaclava. He later commanded the relief army in the Indian rebellion of 1857. Literature: Paul Atterbury, 'The Parian Phenomenon', p. 240. CONDITION REPORT: No obvious major defects.

* JOHN CUNNINGHAM RGI (SCOTTISH 1926-1998) PILGRIMS oil on canvas, signed 89cm x 69cm Provenance : Private Scottish collection for many years. A genuinely outstanding major work by John Cunningam. Note : John Cunningham was born in Lanarkshire. He studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1943 but his studies were interrupted by the Second World War during which time he served in the army. He returned to study from 1948-1950. He vibrant paintings are in the tradition of the Scottish Colourists. Cunningham was senior lecturer at the Glasgow School of Art from 1967-1985. In 1980 he won the Torrance Award as well as the MacFarlane, Carcill and Scottish Amicable Awards. He showed in group exhibitions at the RSA and at Portland Gallery. The Glasgow Art Club gave Cunningham a seventieth-birthday retrospective in 1996. His works appear in many notable public, corporate and private collections including Kelvington Art Gallery, Hunterian Gallery and the University of Glasgow.

Lord Cardigan, John Thomas Brudenell (1797 - 1868), British General who led the 'Charge of the Light Brigade' against the Russians in the Battle of Balaclava, in 1854, during the Crimean War. Later, Cardigan was falsely accused of not leading the Charge by FitzRoy Somerset, 1st Baron Raglan. Libel action began in 1863. Autographed letter signed, to an Army Captain, speaking of the Battle of Balaclava and requesting that the Captain certify that Cardigan did lead the Light Brigade, stating many others have done so, dated 1863. Very good condition, paper tabs and paper strip on fold on reverse

Lot 640

Lord Horatio Kitchener (1850 - 1916), British Military Leader and Statesman, Secretary of State for War for the early part of the First World War. He was also depicted on the famous Army Recruitment poster. Kitchener was part of many battles and was in Battle of Omdurman and the Boer War. Autographed letter signed, red embossed, Commander in Chief in India, headed paper Wildflower Hall, Kitchener's summer residence in Shimla, Himalayas, undated but probably early 1900s. Good condition

Frederick, Duke of York (1763 - 1827), son of George III, his disasters in battlefield immortalised in nursery rhyme, appointment made with William Beechey, Artist, at Beechey's studio in Harley Street, sent from Horse Guards, 1812. General Sir Charles Napier (1782 - 1853), remarkable Military career with a monument to him in Trafalgar Square, autographed part-letter signed. Field Marshal Lord Raglan (1788 - 1855), Commander in Chief, Crimea, autographed letter signed, of Miliary interest, 1854. Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence (1806 - 1857), soldier who helped consolidate British Rule in the Punjab Region, autographed letter and piece signed. The letter is to Taylor and mentions Melville, both known to be his assistants and in closing, speaks of his brother. Fair to good condition, holes on fold, plus small piece signed (7)

He fought in the Indian Mutiny, 1857 - 1858 and North West Frontier, 1858 and many other Wars. He was awarded the Victoria Cross. Autographed letter signed, 1893, regarding the publishing of his memoirs and typed letter signed, 1905, regarding the formation of Rifle Clubs, very good condition. Sir Garnet Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley (1833 - 1913), served in various Wars, including 2nd Burmese War, Crimea War and Zulu Wars, autographed letter signed, on Horse Guards War Office S. W. embossed paper, 1880. General Sir Redvers Buller (1839 - 1908), Decorated with the Victoria Cross for his heroic actions in the Zulu War, autographed letter signed, 1903, speaking of being on half pay and in plain clothes, also another autographed letter signed, on embossed War Office notepaper, 1892. Field Marshal Earl Haig of Bemersyde (1861 - 1928), Military Commander, best known for his part in the Battle of Somme, autographed letter signed. Field Marshal Viscount Allenby, Soldier and Governor, handwritten note, 1920. Sir Hubert Gough (1870 - 1963), served in the Boer War, relieving Ladysmith against orders, autographed letter signed, 1950. Field Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck (1884 - 1981), the only Indian Army Officer called to England to command an entirely British Corps, autographed letter signed, 1962. Lot 125

Early 20th century oak six-plank top refectory dining table, rectangular and brass-bound, on turned baluster supports with plain stretchers, 4.7m x 1.22m with three accompanying damask tablecloths to fit. The table was made from a single oak tree brought down in a storm at Hatherop Castle by the Hatherop Estate carpenters. It originally stood as a reception table in the entrance hall to Hatherop Castle. The castle was bought in 1869 by Thomas Sebastian Bazley, 2nd Baronet, along with the Hatherop Estate. Thomas Stafford Bazley who became the 3rd Baronet was born there in 1907. The castle was requisitioned for Special Operations in the war, the family moved out and the army moved. The table survived the war. This item can be viewed in situ locally by arrangement on Thursday 10th. The castle was sold in the 60's after being rented out as a school for 30 years. The table stayed in the family at various addresses in Eastleach and is being sold in situ. Viewing by arrangement with the auctioneers on Thursday, 10th October
