Gwen Mandley MBE 1911-2005- Kings Road Punks; oil on canvas board, 61x51cm: together with twelve other portrait and landscape studies in oils mostly of punks and of Venice, most signed, (13). Note: Gwen Mandley MBE, worked for the army bureau of current affairs during the war, alongside founding magazines and handbooks all illustrated by young artistic talents such as Geoffrey Slater, James Boswell and others. Working for one of the principal advertising agencies of the day her work shaped the visual environment of Britain in the 1950s. Provenance: The estate of the artist
*Nightingale (Florence, 1820-1910). Autograph postcard signed ‘Florence Nightingale', 3rd June 1882, to Colonel H[enry] Yule, [1820-1889, Geographer], ‘How can I thank you enough for your kindness in sending me your Memoir, than which nothing could interest me more, of that good & great man, Sir W[illiam] Baker. I shall read it carefully - & then, if I may, write again. In the meantime, I will try to live as he did', postmarked London, 3rd June 1882, minor soiling. Provenance: Archdeacon George Glover. Sir William Erskine Baker (1808-1881) was an Army Officer and Engineer, a good friend of Henry Yule, and who worked largely in the Public Works Department in India on various irrigation projects. Henry Yule's work for the Army Sanitary Committee brought him into communication with Florence Nightingale. (1)

Autograph letter signed ‘Bessieres', Orosco, 7th September 1808, to an unnamed Marechal, concerning army movements from Orosco to Areta, mentioning the movement of the enemy on Bilbao and other logistical details, paper with watermark of the Emperor's head, 3 pp., 4to, plus two documents signed ‘Bessieres' on Garde Dea Consula letterhead, the first to General Murat suggesting Captain Dumas as replacement for Lefevre, the second to the Minister of War recommending cavalry officer Lebel, both one page, folio (3)
*Charles I (King of England, 1600-49). Document signed ‘Charles R', Westminster, 20th February, [1630], creating Sir Robert Steward a high Steward in the corporation of Bury St. Edmond [Suffolk], and to pay him £300 and a sum of ‘twentie marks per annum during his life', integral blank, a little soiling, tipped onto an old album leaf with some see-through from adhesion marks at upper margins Sir Robert Stewart or Steward [died 1670?] was a royalist army officer who later served King Charles I in Ireland. Provenance: Archdeacon George Glover. (1)
*Joubert (Barthelemy Catherine, 1769-99). Four autograph documents signed, [1st March 1797, 5th March 1798, 30th November 1798 & 16th December 1798], the first to General Beliard concerning the need to use animals for the subsistence of the brigade, the second to the Minister of War, the third an order of the day to the Court General in Milan, and the last to the General of the First Division in Turin, all on printed Armee d'Italie letterhead, and all signed ‘Joubert', each one page (the third two pages), 4to/folio, together with one further document signed by General Championnet on Naples army letterhead, [7th February 1799], one page with integral address panel, folio. Joubert first came to the attention of Napoleon during the campaign of 1796 and was thereafter repeatedly selected for command of important detachments. He died in the disastrous battle of Novi. (5)

COLT LONDON', blued rebated cylinder with naval engagement scene, case-hardened frame, blued grip-strap and trigger-guard, case-hardened rammer, figured one-piece grips, and much original finish throughout (action seized), London proof marks, matching numbers with the exception of the wedge and rammer (neither numbered), in original brown leather flap holster (belt loops missing).

Together with a ladys silver fob watch, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and hands and a subsidiary seconds dial, the silver case with engraved decoration and a vacant cartouche, on a ladys white metal Albert chain; and an Army Services mechanical pocket watch, with white enamel dial and subsidiary seconds dial. Awarded to an Egyptian soldier. Together with two Army Rifle association Medals for the King George Cup, silver and bronze, 1920, awarded to Major E. J. De C Boyse.

* Wedgwood (Geoffrey Heath, 1900-1977). Trattoria Gatti, Rome, 1929, etching, signed in pencil to lower margin, plate size approx. 180 x 180mm (7 x 7ins), framed and glazed After Army service in the First World War, Geoffrey Wedgwood studied at Liverpool School of Art, and the Royal College of Art. He won the Prix de Rome for engraving in 1925, exhibited at the Royal Society of Etchers, the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, Fine Art Society, and elsewhere. (1)
* Doyly-John (C. R., 1906-1993). Street scene, Eze village, South of France, oil on canvas, signed, approx. 355 x 255mm (14 x 10ins), framed, with Frost and Reed label to verso Doyly-John served in the Army during the Second World War, and was wounded by a bomb blast in 1945, after which he took up painting. His work is characterised by the use of bold colour and the accomplished use of the palette knife. (1)
