The captain was involved in the provisioning of Arctic and Antarctic voyages. This chronometer was purchased by the Royal Observatory in 1901 and Greenwich records have shown that it was used by Ernest Shackleton in 1921, likely as part of the Quest expedition of Antarctica in 1921-1922. This expedition was deemed 'the last of the great voyages of discovery' and was also the last voyage that Shackleton would undertake. Originally conceived as an Arctic voyage to travel north of Alaska, a last-minute loss of funding meant that the expedition could not go ahead. John Quiller Rowett, who had agreed to partially fund the Arctic voyage, remarkably agreed to fund the entirety of a new, replacement mission - but it had to be south-bound to the Antarctic. This chronometer was collected by Shackleton from Greenwich 21 July 1921 and the voyage began on 17 September of that year. Shackleton was unwell on board the Quest, and unfortunately, by the time the ship reached South Georgia, he was quite ill. He died of a heart attack shortly after arriving on 5 January 1922. He was buried on South Georgia as it was not feasible to send his body back to the U.K. Despite a double attempt by the remaining crew over the next year to reach Antarctica, they were not successful. The chronometer was recorded as being returned from Portsmouth to Greenwich in December 1925 and was sent to Kullberg for servicing the following year.Kullberg 6611 was well-acquainted with Antarctic conditions, having accompanied Dr. Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911–14. Dr. Douglas Mawson had previously been the geologist on Shackleton's 1907 Nimrod expedition and had been part of the group to first reach the magnetic South Pole. He collected the chronometer from Greenwich on 24 July 1911, and the Australasian Antarctic Expedition began in December of that year. Unlike previous expeditions, this voyage wasn't concerned with geographical exploration, but natural sciences exploration. Their goal was to increase the knowledge of Antarctica as a location; what its weather, flora, fauna, and geology were like. In all, 3,000 km of coastline were investigated over two winters. Dr. Mawson would publish an account of the expedition in 1915; it is interesting that he notes 'It was necessary for two men to remain behind at the base to keep the meteorological records, to wind chronometers, to feed the dogs and to bring up the remainder of the stores from the edge of the ice cliff.' In addition to Kullberg 6611, there were two sideral chronometers from the Adelaide Observatory, in addition to a variety of other chronometers and half-chronometers, some specially made for the voyage. For the majority of the expedition, the Australian army officer and expedition astronomer, Robert Bage, was in charge of the chronometers. Two chronometers were also carried by Mawson and his exploration party when they explored Antarctica with dog sleds, though it is not known which chronometers were taken with them.Kullberg 6611 was returned to Greenwich in 1914; it was quickly serviced by Kullberg and then installed on the HMS Honeysuckle on 24 May 1915. This ship was one of a group of floral-titled ships known as the 'Flower Class', which served as minesweepers and later as convoy escorts during the First World War. The HMS Honeysuckle was deployed around Turkey and was manned by mostly Australian and New Zealander crew. The chronometer was returned to Greenwich in 1920, quickly serviced, and then collected by Shackleton, as noted above. After the Shackleton voyage, it was extensively serviced, before being sent to Hong Kong for five years. The Greenwich records of its use end in 1936. We are indebted to Mike Dryland of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, for accessing the records for Kullberg 6611.Mawson, D. Property of the Hon. Nicholas Napier Williams, Edwin (1782-1855) Portrait of Lieutenant General Sir Charles James Napier with his favourite Arab charger Red Rover 1853 Signed and dated lower left 'Edwin Williams 1853' Oil on canvas The eldest of four famous brothers in whom the Duke of Wellington took a great interest, Charles Napier had an exemplary military career. He is best known as the Conqueror of Sind in 1843, for which he was made a GCB. He is also remembered as a gifted administrator for his work as Resident for Cephaloniá. The marble statue of him in St Paul's Cathedral bears the inscription, 'A prescient general, a beneficent governor, a just man'. The fact that the majority of the subscribers to the statue of him in the south-west corner of Trafalgar Square were private soldiers is also testimony of his popularity in the Army. Towards the end he desired that his charger, Red Rover, should be brought to his bedside, that he might caress him once more: but the horse was frightened and would not approach; so, with a sigh of disappointment, Napier turned round and begged his wife to take care of its comfort. Dimensions: 36 in. (H) x 25 in. (W)

Giuseppe Caputi (Italian, active 1813-1833): A Roman patinated bronze figure of 'The Dying Gaul'After the antique, circa 1820The wounded warrior on oval base, marked 'CAPUTI', 23.3cm highFootnotes:The Italian sculptor and medallist Giuseppe Caputi was active in Rome during the first half of the 19th century. LiteratureL. Forrer, Biographical Dictionary of Medallists, Coin-, Gem-, and Seal-Engravers, Mint-Masters, etc. Ancient and Modern. With Reference to their Works. B.C. 500 - A.D. 1900, London, 1904, vol i, p. 342.First recorded in the Ludovisi Collection in 1623, the antique marble known as 'The Dying Gaul' was acquired for the Capitoline Museums by Pope Clement XII, before being ceded to the French in 1797. The sculpture arrived in Paris in a triumphal procession and was housed in the Musée Central des Arts. After Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815, it was returned to the Capitoline Museums, where its fame was such that, it was displayed in a dedicated room named after it. The subject was long interpreted as a Gladiator until late 19th-century scholarship identified the poignant figure as a wounded Galatian, whose army invaded the Hellenistic kingdom of Pergamon in the third century AD. Since the marble's discovery, its popularity has spawned numerous reductions in bronze, marble and alabaster.Related LiteratureF. Haskell and N. Penny, Taste and the Antique. (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceSold Bonhams 12th October 2004, lot 128.Gerald Benney decided that his home at Beenham House in Berkshire was the place to develop the use of enamels. The first steps were to travel to Zurich to find an enameller who worked for Burch Korrodi. By chance he came across the Norwegian Berger Bergensen who had worked for the House of Bolin as well as Burch. Bergensen was persuaded to come to Beenham House and taught the Benney workforce all he knew about enamelling. Alan Evans and Robert Winter became notable master enamellers for Benney. It took several years to master the craft. He refined and mastered this art, enamelling larger surface areas than Fabergé.ADRIAN GERALD SALLIS BENNEY CBE RDI (1930 – 2008)Gerald Benney was one of the most outstanding goldsmiths of the 20th century, with works being continuously produced for over fifty years, from private commissions to mass production.Born in Hull, Yorkshire in 1930. His mother Aileen was a talented silversmith and his father, Ernest, was Principal of Brighton College of Art. It was at Brighton College of Art between 1946-1948 that he trained as a silversmith under Dunstan Pruden. After two years national service with the Royal Army Service Corps he went to the Royal College of Art under Professor Robert Goodden. In his first year he was awarded a Prince of Wales scholarship. As well as designs in silver, in his early years Benney also used other material to design a range of products including clocks, lamps and prams.Benney found his first workshop at Suffolk House, Whitfield Place, off the Tottenham Court Road in London during his last term at the RCA. It was at the RCA that Benney met fellow silversmiths David Mellor and Robert Welch; between them they were to revolutionise post war silver design. At this time he also met the jeweller, John Donald.Early in his career Benney discovered, by accident, the distinctive surface texturing of silver that was to become his signature. He inadvertently used a hammer with a damaged head while producing a cup, and liked the effect. This surface texturing soon became known as 'Benney Bark Finish'. The finish was widely imitated and dominated contemporary silver design for almost two decades. Its success was, not only, for its new contemporary look but also for the practical reasons, that it almost eliminated tarnish and fingerprints. In 1963, Benney moved to Beenham House near Reading. It was here that he decided to develop the use of enamels. Starting in 1968 he revived the almost-lost art of enamelling, he went on to be one of the world's foremost modern enamellers. In 1969, he moved his London studio to Falcon Wharf, Bankside where he eventually employed 22 people. In 1973 Benney moved his workshop to warehouses in Bear Lane, Southwark. Also in this year Goldsmith's Hall held a major retrospective of his work.In 1974 he received his first Royal Warrant granted by The Queen, followed by another in 1975 by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. In 1980 a fourth Royal Warrant was granted from HRH The Prince of Wales. Becoming the first craftsman to hold four Royal Warrants simultaneously.Benney's work can be seen in many collections worldwide, including those of the Victoria and Albert Museum and The Goldsmiths' Company. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Finnish Puukko Knife Belonging to a German Army Doctor Hans Schurig, superbly detailed example of the traditional knife of the Finnish people known as a Puukko knife, this example with its ebony handle has been finely etched in silver with the rampant lion and shield insignia of the Finns and swastika below in circle, the reverse side with similar etching “An Dr med HANS SCHURIG Zur Errinerung von H&A KOSKENHOVI”, Very top of the dagger handle appears to have the date 1933.
