CHARLES V: (1500-1558) Holy Roman Emperor and Archduke of Austria 1519-56, King of Spain (Castile and Aragon) 1516-56, and Lord of the Netherlands as titular Duke of Burgundy 1506-55. A rare L.S., `Yo El Rey´, a large signature, three pages, folio, Valladolid, 11th April 1527, in old Spanish. The lengthy and cleanly written letter refers to the funds which were aproved to pay for the woks of the ramparts of the city, considering the timing and the possibility of a siege, stating in part `Primeramente, ya sabeis como maestre Lope Cantero tomó a destajo la obra de los muros de la villa de Fuenterrabía en cierto precio… cuatro mil ducados para la citada obra. First of all, you already know that Master Lope Cantero took on the work of the walls of the town of Fuenterrabía at a fixed price… four thousand ducats for the aforementioned work. It is my will that the Stone quarry works continue as agreed, in case this summer there is no expectation of a need for a defense wall in the said town, and in case the said fence is expected… with the four thousand ducats, or with whatever of them are necessary. The said town should be repaired with wood in the parts that need it as it will seem to Sancho Martinez de Leyva, our Captain of the said town…”) Bearing at the base and beneath the Emperor´s signature, a bold ink countersignature. Overall age wear, mostly to edges, with clipped bottom corner, only affecting some words, but not affecting the signatures. Very small repair to the verso of the last page and few extremely small holes to the folds. F Fuenterrabia is a town situated in the north of Spain, in the Basque Country. Also called in Basque Hondarribia. Only three weeks after the present letter was signed by the Emperor, occured one of the most important and unexpected events during Charles´ V reign, The Sack of Rome on 6th May 1527. The capture of the city by the mutinous troops of Charles V, who only intended to threaten Pope Clement VII with military action if he did not come to his terms, ended with looting and killing. Despite the Emperor´s orders not to storm the city, the 14000 men of Imperial army, largely unpaid and mostly with German and Spanish soldiers, ended with holding citizens for ransom without any restraint. Pope Clement VII took refuge in Castel Sant´Angelo after the Swiss Guard were annihilated. He remained there until a ransom was paid to the pillagers.
FREDERICK II: (1712-1786) King of Prussia 1740-86, known as Frederick The Great. A very fine L.S., `Frederic´, a bold ink signature, one page, 4to, Potsdam, 24th February 1749, to Mr. Neaulme, in French. The letter refers to some books that the King wants and is due to be paid to the librarian, stating `Le Roy ayant reçu la représentation du libraire Neaulme du 18 de ce mois touchant un compte de livres qu´il prétend avoir fourni pour Sa Majesté, Elle lui fait savoir qu´il n´a qu´à envoyer le dit compte au Trésorier privé Fredersdorff , qui le payera.´ (Translation: "The King having received the representation of the bookseller Neaulme on the 18th of this month regarding a pending amount for books which he purports to have delivered to His Majesty, the King informs him that he only has to send the said bill to the Privy Treasurer Fredersdorff, who will pay it.") Paper showing an attractive watermark. With blank integral leaf. G to VGMichael Gabriel Fredersdorf (1708-1758) was the longest-standing valet and companion of Frederick II of Prussia. The King and Fredersdorf met when the future Frederick II was still in prison for having attempted to run off with his former companion. Fredersdorf, son of a peasant, served in the army, and was four years older than the heir to the throne. Historians have speculated that Fredersdorf and Frederick II had a homosexual relationship. Voltaire would later describe the relationship in his Memoires as, "This young soldier, handsome, well made, and who played the flute, served to entertain the prisoner in more than one fashion." When Frederick ascended to the throne in 1740, he made Fredersdorf his private treasurer and, within less than a month, gave him the estate of Zernikow as a present.

Churchill writes in a forthright manner to defend General Montgomery, in full, ´I must say that I think "Punch", in the cartoon this week, pays the Eighth Army a very back-handed compliment by representing it as a squirming little ferret. Considering that the intention was to do them honour, the shot was a very poor one. Nor is the proportion of Montgomery and his Army that between a man and a ferret, and he would be the first to resent it. As a constant reader of "Punch" over so many years, I think I must tell you that this is the biggest flop since the cartoon of John Bull waking from his wartime nightmare on the very day the Germans marched on Prague. I am sure your colleagues will welcome criticism from their readers´. A letter of extraordinary content. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGA. P. Herbert (1890-1971) English humorist, novelist, playwright and politician who was a regular contributor to Punch from 1910 and, from 1924, a member of the editorial staff. Punch magazine was well known for its satirical cartoons. The caricature Churchill refers to in the present letter was entitled The Desert Ferret and can be viewed on the British magazine´s website. Drawn by the English illustrator Bernard Partridge, the image shows British General Bernard Law Montgomery, Commander of the Eighth Army in the North Africa Campaign, placing a ferret labeled "8th Army" over a hole he has just dug in the ground. One of the most decisive battles of World War II, the second battle at El Alamein, was fought between the British Eighth Army and the German Afrika Korps in the hot Egyptian desert from October to November of 1942. Though the casualties numbered in the tens of thousands, the battle served as a turning point of the war in North Africa. Montgomery was lauded for his leadership and, in 1950, Churchill wrote in his memoirs ´It may almost be said, before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat´.

Countersigned by Meynier. With address leaf bearing a paper seal affixed. Small age toning only to the upper edge, otherwise G to VGThe letter bears to the heading ''Regina di Cipro'' (''Queen of Cyprus''). Christine of France did as much as she could to ensure that her court rivalled in splendour that of her sister Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I of England. She strongly encouraged her husband to claim his right to the rather empty title of King of Cyprus and Jerusalem, a kingdom which led to him being tagged as 'a King without a Crown'. She did not keep it a secret that she would rather have been a Queen than a Duchess.Marquis Ghiron Francesco Villa (16??-1670) General and later Marshal of the Piedmontese army, he served France, the Duchy of Savoy and the Republic of Venice. A close friend and state Councilor of Christine of France. The Marquis Villa was one of the leaders of the Francophile party in Piedmont, being in direct contact with Cardinal Mazarin. Appointed colonel of cavalry in 1641, he took an active part, until 1659, in the battles of the Duchy of Savoy against the troops of the Spanish Duchy of Milan led by his intimate enemy the Marquis of Caracena.
