Indian Army. Rajputana Rifles post 1922 Officer’s pouch belt plate.A good British made die-stamped lightly silvered example. Laurel sprays surmounted by crowned ‘Bourbon’ tablet; the laurel bearing numerous honour scrolls. Within the sprays, a Maltese cross with lions between the angles and RR cypher to rope edged centre; the arms of the cross ornamented with further battle honours. Four screw posts to reverse VGC
15th Lancashire Rifle Volunteers Victorian shako plate circa 1869-78.A good scarce die-stamped white metal example. Within crowned laurel sprays, an oval strap “LANCASHIRE RIFLE VOLUNTEERS”; ‘15’ to seeded centre. Two loops to reverse. Old lead repair to base of wreath only visible from reverse. GC Raised at Liverpool 10th January 1860. Became 4th VB King’s Liverpool Regiment in 1888. This is the actual piece photographed as No. 1548 in “Head-dress Badges of the British Army”.

Rectangular gilt seeded plate with burnished rim, mounted with rather crude native silver crowned oval strap “SECOND CAVALRY” , VR to centre, resting in laurel sprays bearing honours “DELHI LUCKNOW AFGHANISTAN 1878-89 AHMED KHEL” on base scroll “PUNJAB FRONTIER FORCE”. Accompanied by a folder of research.Citation for the Military Cross:“At Ramicourt on the 3rd October 1918 he led his Platoon to it’s final objective through heavy machine gun fire. When the enemy counter attacked he collected men from three different Battalions organised them and held off the enemy until darkness. Although suffering severely from shell shock he remained at duty until the Battalion came out of action. He showed great courage and determination.”Lieutenant Robert George Whittaker MC was born in Durban in 1893, in 1915 he volunteered for service with the South African Service Corps and saw action in German South West Africa. Following the end of hostilities in this region he was discharged and in 1916 sailed to England. He was commissioned into the Army Service Corps December 1916. He was posted to France in July 1917, after a number of postings he is attached to the Notts & Derby Regiment and then to the 1/5th Bn. This Battalion formed part of the 139th Bde, 46th Division. Surviving the war he resigned his commission on the 4th August 1919.

COLES L.N.LANC REGT”, 1914/15 Star, “18514 C.Q.M.SJT J. COLES L.N.LANC R”, British War Medal Victory Medal, “WO CL 2 L.N. LANC R.”, Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal (EVIIR), “1609 C. SJT L.N. LANCS REGT”, Meritorious Service Medal (GVR), “18514 R.Q.M.SJT 8/L.N.LANC R”. Group mounted for display. ... Accompanied by a quantity of research.Warrant Officer James Cole was born in 1873 and brought up in the Union Workhouse Portsea Hampshire, at the age of 14 he enlisted into the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. After various postings he landed in South Africa in February 1899, some 8 months before the declaration of war with the Boers. He saw action at Modder River and Belmont and his name appeared in Despatches on the 10th September 1901. He returned to the UK in August 1902 and was awarded the Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal. He was posted to the permanent staff of the 3rd Militia Battalion and in 1907 after 21 years service with the Colours was discharged. In 1914 he once again volunteered for service with his old Regiment and with the rank of CQMS of the 8th Bn landed in France on the 25th September 1915. He returned to the UK in early 1918 and was to see a further posting to France in 1919 before his final discharge in March 1919. He was awarded the MSM for services (LG 29/8/18) this being one of only 38 awarded to the Regiment during the Great War. He died at the age of 75 in 1948 at Chorley Lancashire.

These have been mounted into a contemporary oak and glazed frame. PLEASE NOTE the frame has not been opened, but the naming to the BWM & VM can be viewed and are confirmed. ... (2 items)Corporal Percy Nelson was born in Bo'ness, Westmorland he originally volunteered at Carlisle into the Army Service Corps and laded at Gallipoli on the 10th March 1915. He later transferred to the Gordon Highlanders and was Killed in Action on the 15th October 1918, whist attached to the 2nd 14th Bn London Regiment.

DUNLOP”. Mounted for display.Private James Dunlop was born in 1887 at Paisley Renfrewshire, a pre war member of the Scottish Horse he enlisted in 1911. He landed with his Regiment on the 1st September 1915 at Suvla Bay Gallipoli. He was evacuated from Gallipoli due to illness on the 17th December 1915 and returned to England on the 16th January 1916. He appears to have been discharged and transferred to the Labour Corps for home duties and left the army in February 1918..

Taylor M.C. Contained in original forwarding box addressed to Mrs C.V.V. Romer c/o Major N.M. Romer Horse Guards. .. The medal group is accompanied by Lt. Col Taylor’s accoutrements japanned tin with engraved name plate ... Eton School Rowing Medal ... 2x Royal Tournament medals ... regimental History “The Scots Guards 1919-1955” containing a number of photographs by Col Taylor and also contains a number of mentions (Poor Condition) ... etc. PLEASE NOTE Military Cross & 1939/45 Star not present. GC ... plus various prints of regimental uniforms. (Quantity)The citation for the award of the Military Cross appeared in the London Gazette on the 18th May 1943 “On the 6th March 1943 at Tadjer Khir, Major Taylor was in command of an Anti-Tank Company of the Battalion. When the Battalion was attacked by tanks Major Taylor moved fearlessly from one Ant-Tank gun position to another, directing the fire of the guns and encouraging the crews. His complete disregard of danger was an example to all and contributed largely to the destruction of a number of German tanks”. Lieutenant Colonel Guy Aime Dubosc Taylor MC after education at Eton was commissioned into the Scots Guards in 1930. At the outbreak of WW2 he was serving as an Intelligence Officer with the Battalion and embarked for service in Norway. After this disastrous campaign he returned to the UK and was posted to the Middle East. After the North African Campaign he landed with the Battalion in Italy. On the 26th June, the Scots Guards with the support of Tanks attacked a strong German position, the objective was taken by mid morning and the Guards began consolidating their new position clearing pockets of enemy troops. The Germans kept a constant flow of mortar bombs falling on the Guards and it would be direct hit from one of these, that would Kill Lt Col Taylor and a fellow senior Officer. An number of Lt Col Taylor’s photographs appear in the Regimental History and the Imperial War Museum hold some of his papers. The medal box is addressed to his widow who remarried.

81st Foot (The Welch) 1854 India General Service Medal, clasp ‘North West Frontier’.Awarded to “3150 J. FOLEY HMs 81ST REGT”. Private James Foley volunteered under age in 1853, originally into the 50th Foot he transferred into the 81st his service in India is confirmed and he was also awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal. He left the army in 1875.

Boer War Princess Christian’s Army Nursing Service Reserve badge.A scarce unmarked silver 1897-1907 example. The front depicting a lined Geneva cross within a circlet inscribed “PRINCESS CHRISTIAN’S ARMY NURSING RESERVE” and thistle, oakleaf, shamrock and rose devices between each arm. Original stout pin fixing to reverse which is impressed with issue number. Some service wear, GCVendor States Issued to Catherine Terry. Registered March 19th 1900, trained King College Hospital. Hand selected to go out to South Africa with The Field Force of Princess Christian Army Nursing Reserve. She was awarded the QSA with a “Cape Colony” Clasp and the KSA with two clasps.

Disappeared from the Army List by 1863.
WW1 Outstanding Archive of Major F.E. Neel CEF Commandant of the Canadian Grenade Section This archive of ephemera and photographs follows the career of Major Frederic Edmund Neel, an adventurer who served in the early 1890’s in South Africa, participated in the “Jameson Raid” and was taken prisoner. He served during the Boer War, The Great War commanding the Grenade Section of Canadian Military School and during WW2 worked for the Small Arms Limited. The archive includes: “Grenades and All About Them. This book containing what appears to original detailed water colour paintings of the detail of grenades both Allied and German. Leather cover with gilt tooling ... Loose leaf papers and Army message book this giving personal appearance complimented with illustrations of his WW1 Service ... Official papers on the test results on the Heel Percussion Rifle Grenade he designed ... Large number of photographs covering his life from South Africa to the Great War. Various newspaper clippings etc. (quantity) See Lot 585 for miniature medal group.Major Frederic Edmund Neel was born in Jersey in 1871, he was commissioned into the Royal Artillery and was posted to Durban in 1891. In 1893 the war the Matabele War broke out and he fought at the Battle of Bembesi River Crossing. Later a fluent speaker of Dutch was posted an Observer to the Boer Commando under General Joubert. In 1896 Dr Jameson, Administrator of Southern Rhodesia, raised an irregular force to invade the Transvaal. Neel, went along on the adventure and like many of his comrades was captured by the Boers. Due to his attachment to the Boer Commando he was allowed to escape and he rejoined his Regiment. Before the start of the Boer War he visited and meat with Paul Kruger. At the outbreak of the Boer War he saw action at Pretoria, Kimberley, the relief of Mafeking. He was later in the war attached to “Kitchener’s Fighting Scouts. In 1905 he resigned his commission and after his marriage moved to Canada and worked for a Railway construction company who later got the contract to build in Mexico 1908, about the time General Huerta took over the Government. At the outbreak of the Great War he called upon an old friend Sir Sam Hughes, who assured him if he could get over to England he would be granted a Commission in the Canadian Army. Passage across the Atlantic was near impossible but a chance meeting with a fellow Officer from South Africa days, allowed him to sign up as a merchant crewman to look after remounts for the British Army. He served as Major OC The Grenade School Shorncliffe, his job involving trips to the front lines in France; on one such occasion he was wounded in the head by a rifle grenade. In 1917 he reverted to the rank of Lieutenant so he could join a Battalion in France and served with 124th Bn CEF. He returned to Canada in 1919 and again resigned his commission. At the outbreak of WW2 he once again offered his services to the Army, but time had caught up with him and at the age of 69 he was rejected. Not deterred he found employment with the Canadian Small Arms Company and remained in their employment until 1956. See Lot 585 for miniature medal group.
Indian Army. 7th Madras Light Cavalry 1862 Captain’s Commission.A good example to George Travis Radcliffe, signed by George (Field Marshal HRH George Duke of Cambridge, Commander in Chief, son of Queen Victoria) and de Grey Ripon (later Viceroy); complete with blue paper seals. Framed and glazed with biographical details. GCGeorge Travis Radcliffe 1825-1904. Educated at Rugby, had a distinguished military career involving various actions in the Indian Mutiny (Medal and clasp) culminating in being promoted a full General in 1888.
Army Medical Department Victorian Officer’s peaked pillbox Forage Cap.A rare and superb example of the 1880 pattern for a Surgeon Captain by Bartels & Co., Hanover St., London. The concave-sided body of dark blue melton cloth. Band of 1½ in. gold “staff” lace with twin black stripes. The top bearing a gold/black corded button edged with eight circles of gold French braid. Patent leather peak edged with gold “passing” embroidery. Roan leather headband, crimson silk lining bearing manufacturer’s details, and narrow chinstrap. Virtually unworn, near mint condition.
1918 Pattern British Army WW1 issue tunic.This example similar to the 1902 pattern, but tailored with single pleat to the collar. The each sleeve Sergeant chevrons and to the right cuff red and blue service chevrons reprinting 1914 to 1918 overseas service. Complete with general service buttons (1 absent) and to the interior the correct pre 1924 WD issue stamp. The tunic remains in good condition, but with scattered moth holes. Tailored with single collar pleats, no lining to the collar and lining to the pocket flaps.

Complete with black leather suspension strap with oval aluminium securing plate and Assmann marked DRGM spring clip. Wear to scabbard chape plating, blade bright. Generally VGCRemoved by Captain R.J. Hewett 316367, a Military Government Officer 21st Army Group, from the desk of the Düsseldorf Chief of Police.

A good example with plated single edged plain fullered 84 cm slightly curved blade bearing cutler’s inverted triangle and sword logo to the forte. The gilded hilt with single bar guard with embossed oakleaf decoration and to the langet a German Army eagle and swastika with folded wings. The black grip with twist wire binding is surmounted by a oak leaf ornamented combined backstrap and pommel. Housed in original black painted steel scabbard with one loose ring. Complete with brown leather hanger bearing spring clip. VGC
