Anatomy.- Salvage (Jean-Galbert) Anatomie du Gladiateur combattant, applicable aux beaux arts, first edition, deluxe copy on special thick paper with counterproof plates, half-title, engraved plate entitled "L'art s'illustre par la science", one preliminary leaf misbound, 16 superb engraved plates printed in black and sepia, each accompanied by the corresponding counterproof plates bound opposite, 5 engraved plates printed solely in black, likewise with corresponding counterproofs bound opposite, printed on fine paper, some plates with Salvage's own oval ink stamp in lower corner (monogram JGSE above D.MDne, Lugt 4565), occasional marginal soiling, a few leaves with minor marginal tears/repairs, modern red morocco-backed marbled boards by Albert Valat of Montpellier, spine gilt, g.e., folio (544 x 376mm.), Paris, chez l'Auteur, de l'Imprimerie de Mame, 1812.⁂ A magnificent deluxe copy in exceptional condition. "The year 1812 saw the publication of one of the more remarkable illustrated books ever to appear in France. Titled 'Anatomie du gladiateur combattant,' it was inspired by contemporary rhetoric celebrating the role of the arts in the new post-revolutionary society. At the same time, it was a magnificent display of hard-won knowledge of human anatomy and a tribute to medical science" (Jean-Galbert Salvage and His Anatomie du gladiateur combattant: Art and Patronage inPost-Revolutionary France, Raymond Lifchez in: Metropolitan Museum Journal 44, 2009, p. 163). Salvage (1772-1813) was an army surgeon, anatomist, and skilled draftsman. He created three monumental écorchés, i.e. casts of human bodies represented without skin. He used the bodies of soldiers "in their prime" who were killed in duels, rather than patients who died as a result of illness. Salvage arranged his cadavers in the same pose as the Borghese Gladiator sculpture and meticulously worked out the skeletal and muscular anatomy. Salvage's écorchés are preserved at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts. This copy is enhanced by the inclusion of the counterproof plates, which show an important stage between Salvage's original drawings and the finished engraving. A counterproof is a proof of a proof - the artist takes an impression from the engraved plate and while it is still wet lays another piece of paper over it and runs it through the press, creating a counterproof. Because the original proof is the mirror image of the plate, the counterproof is the mirror image of a mirror image, so that the image is aligned the same way it is on the plate. The artist can draw on the counterproof and work from that to the plate without having to reverse the image. The counterproofs here do not show the titles or captions, which were added later.

Thomas (Edward, poet and writer, 1878-1917) 3 Autograph Letters signed to Clement H. Whitby, on the publication of his books of poetry, Along the Way & The Light of Life and some other other poems, together 3pp., 2 letters in ink and 1 in pencil, sm. 4to, Steep, Petersfield, Hampshire & the Royal Garrison Artillery, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, 11th May & 2nd November 1914 & 8th October 1916, "It was a great pleasure to me to have your book & your letter & I should have said so at once but I was moving from place to place & only able to dip into your book at intervals. In fact I very seldom indeed find anything I can admire so much in devotional poetry. It is mostly conventional & often vague, while your simplicity makes familiar things new. I have particularly liked 'Health', 'Mindful of that Country' & 'Heavenly Beauty', & if I can find an opportunity of saying so I will", and writing as an enlisted soldier from the R.G.A. camp in Trowbridge, "As I have been in army now since July of last year I have got out of things & reading is difficult & in fact impossible... . After being in the ranks more than a year I am now half way towards a commission in the R.G.A."; and other correspondence, including from Alice Meynell and others to Whitby and newspaper cuttings concerning his poems, all laid down, browned, bound in a contemporary half morocco album, covers damp-stained, sm. 4to.⁂ ?Unpublished.

* CHARLES MURRAY (SCOTTISH 1894 - 1954), CHRYSANTHEMUMS oil on board 64cm X 44cm Framed (original) Provenance: Exhibited: City of Bradford Art Gallery, Cartwright Memorial Hall, Jubilee Exhibition 1954, Exhibit No. 770 (label verso). James Bourlet & Sons label verso no H 2611. Artist's label verso, partially obscured by owners (loan) label: Mr E Grierson, Greystead, Tarset, Hexham, Northumberland. Note: Charles Murray's oil paintings rarely appear at auction and, as he often left his work unsigned, some invariably aren't attributed to him. In October (20th) 2018 Tennants (Leyburn) offered "Crinan, Scotland" a small (23.5 x 35cm) watercolour with Leicester Galleries (London) "Artists of Fame & Promise Exhibition" provenance, which sold for £1600 (hammer). Charles Murray was born in Aberdeen and studied at the Glasgow School of Art for three years. He served with the ‘White Army’ in Russia from 1918-20, joining a diverse group of counter-revolutionary forces who fought against the Bolsheviks. On his return to Glasgow, Murray won the highly coveted "Prix de Rome" for etching and studied at the British School in Rome from 1922-25. He travelled extensively in Europe but came back to Scotland in 1926 to teach engraving at the Glasgow School of Art, and later lived in Leeds and Middlesex. He produced paintings and etchings in a style influenced by Mannerism. Murray had his first major one-man show at The Leicester Galleries (London) in 1946 and another at Batley Art Gallery in 1950. There was a Memorial exhibition at Temple Newsam House (Leeds Museum & Art Galleries) in 1955 and an Edinburgh International Festival show at the Merchant Company Hall in 1977. Murray's paintings have always attracted academic acclaim and the Tate bought one of his paintings in 1940. Thirty of his paintings are held in UK Public collections including at Glasgow Museums & Art Galleries, the Arts Council Collection (Southbank Centre), Bradford Museum & Galleries, the Ferens Art Gallery, The Hepworth, Leeds Art Gallery and Museums, Kirklees Museum & Galleries, Sheffield Museums, Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums and Tate (London).
HERMÈS Eperon. HERMÈS Eperon. France. Ca. 1952. Pig's leather with sailcloth H, 22,5 x 19,0 x 10,0 cm. The Sac EPERON from Hermès is certainly a highlight of the pre-Christmas auction in our house. This model was first designed in black crocodile leather in 1940 for Rita Hayworth by Robert Dumas. Rita Hayworth, Hollywood goddess of the time, was so popular that her face adorned even the bombers of the American army. The international customers of the Hermès company were later able to have a model made individually in various colors and materials. Each bag was a unique piece of craftsmanship from the studios on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The bag offered today was individually ordered by the then customer for his wife in natural pigskin leather in a combination with Toile H, an iconic fabric of the house, and delivered to her before Christmas 1952 with her initials embossed on it. Even the order card still exists and impressively documents the provenance. This piece is a special example of how the classic and valuable workmanship is still just as desirable and highly topical after 68 years. The Toile H combined with Barenia leather is today one of the favorite combinations of true Hermès connoisseurs. Now the wonderfully preserved piece is back on the Christmas table after 68 years. Original packaging enclosed. Condition as good as new. JOHN JACKSON R.A. (BRITISH 1778-1831) PORTRAIT OF FREDERICK, DUKE OF YORK AND ALBANY (1763-1827) oil on canvas(75cm x 62cm (29.5in x 24.5in))Footnote: Provenance: Private Collection, England. Formerly in the collection of Derek Sherborn. Note: John Jackson R.A. (1778- 1831) was a celebrated English painter, best known for his high society portraits. Jackson received early support from the landed gentry, notably Sir George Beaumont, 7th Baronet, who offered him residence at Castle Howard, where he could study and copy from Beaumont’s extensive collection. He also received £50 per year which permitted him to attend the Royal Academy Schools. He was then elected as a member of the Royal Academy on 10th February 1817. Jackson was a prolific portraitist, with numerous notable sitters including the Duke of Wellington, the explorer Sir John Franklin, and Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany. Prince Frederick (1763- 1827) was the second son of King George III and Queen Charlotte, and served as the Commander-in-Chief of the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. On 27th November 1784, Frederick was created Duke of York and Albany as well as Earl of Ulster. From 1820, he was the heir presumptive to his elder brother, King George IV, until his death in 1827. This portrait of the Duke of York and Albany is an excellent example of Jackson’s skill as a portraitist. Jackson was particularly influenced by Sir Thomas Lawrence and Henry Raeburn, which is notable in this piece in the remarkable realism and personality evoked, as well as his dramatic and unusual use of lighting. Several versions of this portrait were made by Jackson, which allows us to speculate that this was painted circa 1822, by comparing it to another very similar composition after John Jackson in the National Portrait Gallery in London, also dated circa 1822.
