Lot 148

A Boyar cape, possibly for the character Igor-Svyatoslavich-the-Brave, designed by Nicholas Roerich for Diaghilev's 1914 production of 'Prince Igor', stamped to the interior, 'Property of Sir Joseph Beecham' and also handwritten 'Prince Igor, Boyars, Sketch 4, Russell', numbered 268, of ochre linen painted with linked patterned roundels, adorned with pearl beads, and domed beaten metal discs, brass clasp, edged in brown stencilled velvet and lined in pink cotton stencilled with black undulating bands, roundels and stripesSerge Diaghilev's Prince Igor was premiered in Paris in 1909, with Feador Chaliapin in the role of Galitsky and costumes designed by Nicholas Roerich. The impresario Gabriel Astruc who had backed this production over-stretched himself by building the new Theatre de Champs Elysees and went bankrupt. In 1910 Sir Joseph Beecham (the pharmaceutical giant and father of renowned conductor - Thomas) came to Diaghilev's aid by sponsoring a season in London's Drury Lane theatre, but as he was more interested in opera than ballet it was agreed that in addition to the ballets that Diaghilev would produce four operas - one of which was 'Prince Igor'. With this new funding Diaghilev was able to transport from Russia the small army of orchestra, chorus and soloists required for his lavish opera productions. He staged highly successful annual opera seasons at London's Drury Lane Theatre and the Victoria & Albert Museum holds posters for productions of 'Prince Igor's' Polovtsian dances on March 1st and June 22nd 1913 with principal dancers Mme. Sophie Fedorova and M. Adolf Bolm. In 1914 Diaghilev reprised the full Paris opera production in four acts with prologue with conductor Thomas Beecham, starring Chaliapin who was paid £400 a night (a fortune at the time) in the role of Vladimir/Khan Konchak and Bolm and Tchernicheva as principle dancers. It premiered on 8th June, 1914 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.Roerich was again invited to provide the full set and costumes beginning work in late 1913 and finishing in early 1914. They corresponded with stage director Alexander Sanin's vision: 'Christian feelings, beliefs intermingling with elements of paganism'.The costumes reflected Roerich's interest in Russian folk art and nomadic tribal history. He used patterns inspired by Central Asian folk dress and textiles and incorporated braids and trimmings purchased from southern Russian nomadic tribal traders at markets in St Petersburg. The vibrantly patterned costumes perfectly combined with Borodin's savage rhythms. Designer and friend Orest Allegri wrote to Roerich (who was unable to attend the first night):'Prince Igor was mounted last night to a full house. It was a staggering success. The British were screaming with delight'.Beecham's opera company struggled through the war years and Roerich was never fully paid for his work. In 1920 the company went bankrupt which resulted in a 'fire sale' of all the company's scenery and costumes. Jacques Rouche, the director of the Paris Opera at the time went to the sale and acquired scenic material from Beecham-Diaghilev productions, notably costumes designed by the artist Leon Bakst for Boris Godunov, which are now in the Moulins archives. There is a 'Prince Igor' costume with identical stamp in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum S.77-1998 CONDITION REPORT: exterior is generally good condition, lacking half of the brass closure clasp

The Straggler by Frank Wootton Print. Signed by the artist along with two of most highly distinguished pilots of World War Two Air Vice Marshall Johnnie Johnson, General Adolf Galland. Frank Wootton at his best! This print commemorates the bravery of American bomber crews. In the late summer of 1943, the US Eighth Army Air Force was striving to prove its long-held theory of daylight bombing over Germany, suffering heavy casualties. Despite the lack of a long-range escort for the splendid P-51 Mustang did not make its appearance until the following year the Mighty Eighth pressed on against formidable German fighter defences. On every daylight raid there were a few stragglers who, damaged by fighters or flak or both, tried to make the hazardous flight back to the UK. The further they fell back from the main formation, the more vulnerable they became to prowling and aggressive German fighters. In this classic painting, Frank Wootton captures superbly all the drama and skill of air fighting as the General of Fighters himself, Dolfo Galland and his worthy adversary, Johnnie Johnson, circle warily over a damaged B-17, each watching for an opening and both very aware that other fighters friendly or hostile could at any time join the party. 24 x 26 inches this has been mounted and never rolled. Its in pristine condition and the colours stunning. Good Condition. All signed items come with our certificate of authenticity. We combine postage on multiple winning lots and can ship worldwide. Louisiana Confederate Presentation Flag of the Lake Providence Cadets, c. 1861, painted silk, with fringe, the front depicting a pelican "in her piety", with cornucopia, under the banner "God and Our Country"; verso with legend "Presented to the Lake Providence Cadets by the Young Ladies, Feb'y 22, 1861", accompanied by copies of a report by noted flag expert Howard Madaus, 75 3/4 in. x 115 3/4 in Provenance: The flag was originally obtained by Lieutenant Joseph M. Collier of the 95th Illinois Vol. Inf. during the siege of Vicksburg (1862-1863). Lieut. Collier enlisted at Belvedere, Ill. and was recruited at Camp Fry in Chicago and during the siege was wounded with the 95th at Lake Providence village at Milliken's Bend. He died June 24, 1863. In 1918 the flag was presented to the Chicago Historical Society by Collier's son, and deaccessioned by the Society in 1974. The Lake Providence Cadets would become Company C, 4th Louisiana Infantry. After organization on May 25, 1861, the 4th received orders to serve on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Through the summer, the companies were divided up between camps at Pascagoula, Biloxi, Pass Christian, Mississippi City, and Ship Island. After the evacuation of Ship Island in September, the regiment moved to Franklin and Brashear City to protect the lower Atchafalaya River and Bayou Teche. In February, 1862, the regiment was ordered to Jackson, Tennessee, to reinforce General Pierre G.T. Beauregard’s army. The regiment fought in the Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, and lost 209 of the 575 men engaged. On May 2, the regiment was ordered to Edward’s Station, Mississippi and then to Vicksburg where it served from May 18 to July 27. From there, the regiment moved to Camp Moore with General John C. Breckinridge’s army and on August 5, 1862 fought in the Battle of Baton Rouge. The 4th Regiment was the first to occupy Port Hudson and helped erect the fortifications there during the fall and winter. The men remained at Port Hudson through the spring of 1863.

Charles F. Zimpel (Prussian/American, 1801-1879), "Topographical Map of New Orleans and its Vicinity, Embracing a distance of twelve miles up and eight and three quarter miles down the Mississippi River and Part of Lake Pontchartrain, representing all Public Improvements existing and projected and important Establishments, accompanied by A Statistical Table, containing the most accurate Illustrations; prefaced by A Splendid View of New Orleans, & Compiled from actual surveys and the best authorities, by Chas. F. Ximpel, Deputy City Surveyor of New Orleans, Chief Engineer of the New Orleans & Carrollton Rail Road Company and late Engineer in the Prussian Service, Scale six inches to the mile, New Orleans March 1834", lithograph, on six sheets, original folio, vignettes showing: Orleans Cotton Press Co., City Hotel, Levee Steam Cotton Press, City Hall (Cabildo), St. Louis Cathedral, Presbytere, Bank of the Canal and Banking Co., City House and Market of the City of Lafayette, Bank of New Orleans, Union Bank, American Theater, Sugar Refinery, Charity Hospital, State House, "Defeat of the British Army...", "Plan of the Banks of the Mississippi and Adjacent Country...", and "Mouth of the Mississippi at the South West Pass", six sheets (combined) 63 in. x 64 in. Note: Zimpel, Charles F. (Karl Frederick Zimpel) and the subject map are best summarized in Ellen Merrill’s Germans of Louisiana. Pelican Publishing Company, Inc. 2005: “Zimpel was a young Prussian aristocrat who soon established a lucrative career in the city as a surveyor, engineer, and architect. His tastes were mainly classical, in keeping with the style in vogue in both Europe and America. He was highly successful in those areas in which he was trained and, for a short time, became deputy surveyor and chief engineer for the city. In 1833 he laid out and developed the City of Carrollton. Perhaps his most important achievement was the detailed map of New Orleans he produced in 1834. Dissatisfied with the quality produced by the lithographers in New Orleans, he sent his original drawing back to Germany. On the return trip the lithographic stone and reproductions were lost at sea, making the Zimpel map a collector’s item. As chief engineer of the New Orleans and Carrollton Railway, which ran from Canal Street to Carrollton Avenue along Nayades Street (now St. Charles Avenue), he got involved in land speculation. Having little experience in this area, he soon fell into debt and fled the city. After only seven years of working in New Orleans, he returned to his native Prussia.” Zimpel also designed and oversaw construction of several important buildings in New Orleans during his tenure here, three of which are shown in vignettes above his map: the Bank of New Orleans, City Hotel, and the Orleans Cotton Press. Only six copies of the Zimpel map have been located, five of which are housed in institutional collections.
