A French Army cadet’s unique gladius style sword of the Ecole de Mars, 1794, DE shallow diamond section blade 21”, heavy cast brass hilt with panelled crossguard and langets, bearing cap of liberty, downward projecting steel arms and single upward knucklebow, “feathered” grip, plain pommel, in its brown fabric panelled brass scabbard with opposed hanging rings and large ornamental chape. GC (worn patches to scabbard fabric, large edge nick to cleaned blade). Plate 9 Note: This sword was designed by the artist Jaques Louis David for cadets of the short lived military academy, L’Ecole de Mars, founded on 1st June 1794 and then dissolved at the end of October the same year owing to the political unrest generated by its students.

A scarce Third Reich “Prinz Eugen” pattern Army officer’s sword of the type favoured by officers of the Waffen SS, pale gilt lacquered over base metal hilt, having eagle and swastika pommel and large eagle with outspread wings on the langet and crosspiece, wire bound black plastic covered grip, in its black painted scabbard. GC (slight wear to hilt plating). Plate 2
