Two Circa 1880's Mother-of-Pearl Fans, both with green/pink montures which are relatively plain. The first, mounted with plain cream moiré satin, bears the name ''Gertrude'' in silver coloured metal, and the head is shaped. Contained in a sturdy brown cardboard box labelled for the Army and Navy Cooperative Society Optical Department, 105 Victoria Street, Westminster SW (London). The second fan of a similar shade pearl is elegantly chamfered on the guards. The recto, of sea-green silk, is painted with a charming depiction of Beauty and the Beast, the beast depicted as a hog wearing a gold and purple velvet crown, and fur trimmed robes. He kneels before Beauty, demurely dressed in a pink skirt printed with hearts, her hair covered with a white cap. The scene is completed with slender reeds, a tiny butterfly, and a monogram encircled by a laurel wreath. The verso is plain cream. Fan 1: Guard length 11.75 inches or 30cm Fan 2: Guard length 12.25 inches or 31cm (2).. The first fan has some small brown marks but nothing major. The second fan has one guard and four sticks broken down by the rivet, seemingly where the slivers of MOP have come apart, as overlaps are evident.
