Field Marshal William Riddell Birdwood, GCB, GCSI, GCMG, GCVO, CIE, DSO (13 September 1865 – 17 May 1951) An Impressive autographed photograph on his retirement in 1930 - He was a British Army officer who saw active service in the Second Boer War on the staff of Lord Kitchener, he saw action again in the First World War as Commander of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915, leading the landings on the peninsula and then the evacuation later in the year, before becoming commander-in-chief of the Fifth Army on the Western Front during the closing stages of the war. He went on to be General officer commanding the Northern Army in India in 1920 and Commander-in-Chief, India, in 1925. An extremely scarce signed photograph.

PLUS 13 not signed, but mostly 1st. edns. Condition varies, from very good/ fine to poor (24)Stephen Reid was a Scottish illustrator and painter who specialised in Georgian settings and costume pieces. He also contributed to magazines, including The Strand Magazine and The Connoisseur.

BARRY, Henry (Lieutenant 85th. foot): 110 page Journal written in a neat hand, between Sept. 1795 and July 1796. Original contemporary leather binding with clasp; Plus: various vellum documents of appointments relating to the above; including: One Signed by George II (August 1759), and Two Signed by George III (27, Oct. 1760; & 24, Sept. 1770); One signed by John Earl Loudoun (Feb. 1763); One to Robert Barry, signed by S. Hodgson, colonel of 5th. Regiment of Foot (Sept. 1761); Two army appointments to Robert Barry, signed by George William Earl of Coventry (1770); Plus a number of others and a small later autograph book. (Qty) (Barry appears in the Army List as a second lieutenant of 22 February 1763, and was gazetted as an ensign in the 52nd Regiment of Foot on 11 March 1768. He became a lieutenant on 23 September 1772, a captain on 4 January 1777, a major in the army on 19 February 1783, and a regimental major on 11 May 1789. He was a lieutenant-colonel in the army on 18 May 1790, was promoted to a lieutenant-colonelcy in the 39th Regiment of Foot on 8 December 1790, and became a colonel on 19 July 1793.His regiment, the 52nd, was engaged in the American Revolutionary War, during which Barry acted as aide-de-camp and private secretary to Lord Rawdon, afterwards Marquis of Hastings, who took a major part in it. While on Lord Rawdon's staff he penned some of the despatches to the British cabinet. The 52nd and Lord Rawdon took part in the battle of Bunker's Hill, the battle of Brooklyn and the battle of White Plains; and at the attack on Fort Clinton. Barry was at the time a lieutenant in the 52nd and aide-de-camp to Lord Rawdon. He afterwards served in India.Returning to England, he appears to have left the army in 1794 and to have settled at Bath, Somerset. He died there on 2 November 1822).

Fine quality 19th century Indian Kutch silver claret jug of baluster form, embossed with floral and foliate decoration, interspaced with birds and animals, magnificent human / lion mask spout, snake handle and domed cover with flower-head finial, on a domed circular foot, engraved presentation inscription 'Presented to Major H. T. Vincent Pay Master Sind Division of the Army by the establishment of the pay office as a tribute of their esteem and gratitude 1861', apparently unmarked. All at approximately 37ozs, 25cm overall height CONDITION REPORT General overall condition is very good. The foot rim is slightly distorted and the cover finial is slightly knocked in

Cromwell, Oliver. Document signed, dated December 6, 1650, 1pp, folio, warrant addressed to Sir John Wollaston and the 'rest of the Trers [Treasurers] at Warre' ordering the payment of £200 to William Clarke for Army expenses, signed and receipted by Clarke.This document is signed by Cromwell, as Commander in Chief of the Army, during his campaign against the Scots in 1650-51. Clarke had been secretary to the Council of the Army 1647-49, and to General Thomas Fairfax, before Cromwell. He marched north with the army in July 1650, and there followed the famous defeat of the Scots at Dunbar in September 1650.
